Project Title: Provide Trained CASA Volunteers to Advocate in Court for Abused and Neglected Children
Project Description:

Last year, there was a 63% increase in the number of children referred to us by the Court, from 132 to 215. The number of referrals found to be appropriate and assigned to CASA Volunteers jumped 71%, from 75 to 128. By the end of fiscal year 2016, we had served 267 abused and neglected children, more than ever before. Though we are only 8 months into FY 2017, we have already served 251 young victims, so it is likely we will exceed that record this year.

Abused and neglected children suffer from violence, food insecurity, and deeply unhealthy relationships. Without intervention, they can face a lifetime of problems such as improper brain development, impaired learning, and anxiety. They have a higher risk for heart, lung, and liver diseases as well as obesity, cancer, and high blood pressure. They are less likely to obtain gainful employment and more likely to get in trouble with the law.

Piedmont CASA Volunteers provide the kind of intervention these young victims need. They are well trained to assist the court and child welfare system in ensuring safety for maltreated youth, as well as permanency, placement stability, physical health, mental health, and education. Local judges value this work so highly that they refer 100% of child abuse and neglect cases brought before them to Piedmont CASA.

We are not impeded by jurisdictional boundaries, thus able to stay with children throughout the life of a case. This ensures that even when social workers, foster parents, and schools change, CASA Volunteers do not – thus providing important continuity for the child.

Research shows that boys and girls with CASA Volunteers spend less time in foster homes, perform better in school, and find safe, permanent homes faster. These are key to enabling these youngsters to become stable, productive adults.

Today’s Date: 03/31/17
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: El Sol’s School for Parents
Project Description:

El Sol’s School for Parents program is designed to support local families in building healthy family dynamics by providing a safe and welcoming place to access information and support. This program will be a reliable source of information and training for families that are often isolated from crucial services and networks, due to their income level, low-literacy level, lack of language skills, and cultural background.

The project will support roughly 100 families living in Jupiter per year, and will be held at a local child-care facility. The 10-week program will include the following topics: the family unit and the role of parents, child development, responsible parenting, the consequences of alcohol abuse for family health, family separation, understanding the American culture, parenting and schools, and the importance of positive communication. Activities for children are provided so that both parents can attend and participate in the classes.

The majority of our clients are immigrants and day-laborers who have relocated to Florida due to extreme poverty in their home country. On average, they have an elementary level education and more than 60% do not speak English. Unfortunately, these circumstances create a large gap within our community that our clients struggle to overcome. This program is a way for our organization to ensure that the families we serve are living socially, financially and emotionally stable lives and that they integrate positively in our community.

This program aligns with the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s program guidelines as it aims to create nurturing environments for children. We believe communication and understanding between parents and children is crucial in maintaining healthy family dynamics. Your support will help us fund the cost of providing free childcare, supervision, and planned curriculum for several age groups of children during School for Parents sessions.

Project Title: The Butterfly Program: Giving Help and Hope to Local Children Fighting Cancer
Project Description:

"Your child has cancer." Are there worse words a parent can hear? Yes, there are. "I’m sorry, there are no more treatments to cure your child or prolong their life." The Pediatric Oncology Support Team, Inc. (POST) is a palliative care team there for families throughout treatment and at the end of life. We need help to give families emotional and financial support so they can focus on what is truly important – easing suffering and making memories.
Since our referrals have increased significantly – 40% during the past 2 years– we are helping more children than ever. The majority of these children survive their battle with cancer, but 20% will not. Excellence in palliative care has been particularly hard to maintain during this growth period. Funding for services at POST has not kept pace with client growth. Our proposal is to increase the depth and breadth of services we give to these brave children and their families.

We cannot change devastating medical outcomes but POST therapists and programs can help ease their burden and support the family through the darkest of times. Emotional support comes from therapists who help the family make difficult decisions, sit with them through tough conversations with physicians, and are bedside at every stage – including at the end of life.

Families are emotionally devastated after months or years battling cancer and need “family time” to build lasting memories so we propose to provide them with respite outings to restaurants, theme parks, etc. POST proposes to advocate with the schools on the child’s behalf to create the most meaningful experience possible. We propose to help financially depleted families financially with housing, transportation, food and funerals. We will also provide education to hospice physicians and to hold an annual memorial service and bereavement support for surviving family members.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 30, 2017
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Ready for School
Project Description:

Founded in 2002, Cradles to Crayons® (“Cradles”) works to lessen the effects of poverty and transform the lives of low-income and homeless children by providing, free of charge, the essential items they need to thrive: clothing, shoes, diapers, baby gear, outerwear, and school supplies.

Cradles-Boston respectfully requests a grant for $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to support the 2017-2018 Ready for School program. This program operates from June through September to provide children with new backpacks filled with school supplies such as notebooks, calculators, crayons and pens. It also provides seasonal, properly-fitting clothing for those children who need it, leading to better academic outcomes for children.

The National Retail Federation reported that in 2016, families spent an average $673.57 on school supplies and new clothing. Getting ready for school puts families living in low-income and homeless situations in a position where they are forced to choose between necessities such as rent and groceries, or clothes and school supplies for their children. In a recent survey, 87.4% of Cradles’ Ready for School families reported that it would have been hard for them to afford school supplies. 72.6% indicated that their children probably would have gone without.

The Ready for School program begins with collections of new and like-new children’s items in either corporate or community locations. Donations are brought to our Giving Factory warehouse where volunteers inspect, sort, and organize them into customized KidPacks® and backpacks. These items are then picked up and brought directly to the children and families we serve through our 130 social service partners.

Leveraging these tremendous volunteer donations of time and resources, Cradles delivers Ready for School items at an organizational cost of just $33 per pack. Support from the Hermanowski Foundation would transform the lives of over 300 children.

Project Title: Generation Genius Authors
Project Description:

As you know, the goal of the Generation Genius Authors (GGA) Program is to cultivate an interest and passion for reading by showing students that reading can be fun. We introduce students to popular authors, send them home with a signed book to start their own personal library, and inspire within them a love for reading. Reading can open up new worlds to children and personal encounters with authors can give writing a life beyond the book. We are empowering children to identify with accomplished professionals, encouraging them to dream, and inspiring them with great literature, are the goals of the GGA program.

The Miami Book Fair thanks you for your previous support of the GGA program. Last year, we offered 31 sessions to 5,785 public school students from 145 Miami-Dade and Broward County schools. Additionally, we brought authors to 42 local schools to reach an additional 3,170 students unable to attend the Book Fair and also conducted two writing workshops. This year, we also conducted four writing workshops for more than 100 students and again hosted the Teen Press Conference (modeled after the successful event held at the National Book Awards each year) for 150 students. In total 9,000+ students from South Florida schools participated in the 2016 Generation Genius program.

In 2016, for the first time we were able to provide every student who attended an on campus GGA session with a free book. This is a critically important goal because according to 2016 post-surveys, 76% of kids had read the book they received at the fair within ten days or said they plan to read it soon. We know that access to books is vital to encouraging a love of reading. GGA encourages that love through face time with authors and access to their literary works.

Today’s Date: 3/27/2017
Requested Amount: 7,000

Project Title: Best Foot Forward Grounded for Life, formerly known as BFF Educational Advocacy Program
Project Description:

Youth in foster care face several challenges. Many have suffered abuse and neglect, and there is often little stability in their lives. Foster children are shuffled frequently to new homes—and subsequently new schools. Each school change puts these already vulnerable children behind their peers. In Palm Beach County, less than half are academically proficient and up to two-thirds more score in the lowest proficiency categories compared to their peers. As a result, less than half of foster youth graduate high school and only 2-3% graduate college.

BFF is a constant support through so much upheaval, uncertainty, by providing educational services to over 60 youth. BFF assist foster youth at a critical time when they are at-risk for dropping out of high school and for future poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and incarceration—an unfair consequence of circumstances over which they have no control.

Funding will support BFF’s Educational Advocacy Program, now known as Grounded for Life, a pragmatic, measurement-based program that improves academic outcomes for foster youth in middle and high school in Palm Beach County. Youth are taught how to communicate with their teachers to stay caught up/get help when they need it and are provided one-on-one, personalized tutoring and mentoring sessions; test taking/study skills assistance; instruction and guidance in the entire post-secondary education process; and communication skill development. BFF programs ensure foster youth have the same tools afforded to children in traditional homes. Without it, they have no one championing their education or guiding them towards successful futures.

BFF will build upon our successful track-record yielding positive impacts over the past five years of participating foster youth:
*100% high school graduation rate
*95% of students on-track to be promoted to the next grade level
*91% decrease in school suspensions
*69% decline in school absences
*82% reduction in school tardiness.

Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Children’s Trauma Counseling
Project Description:

The mission of the Center for Trauma Counseling is to ensure the immediate availability of cost-effective mental health intervention to serve “in need” community residents impacted by trauma-related experiences.

Children’s Therapy: Traditional talk therapy as well as Play and/or Sand Tray therapies will generally be employed with children ages 3 through 11, as it provides a way for them to express their experiences and feelings. Children’s experiences and knowledge are often communicated through play. Our FirstPlay Certified therapist observing the patterns of play, and the child’s willingness to interact, can understand the underlying rationale for behavior both inside and outside the session, and then work to help the child through his or her issues. Children who receive appropriate and early mental health intervention have more positive interaction with peers, perform better in school, and are less-likely to drop out in their high school years.

Adolescent Therapy: Talk and more advanced forms of therapy will be provided to adolescents ages 11 and up. Struggling with the effects of a traumatic event during adolescence can lead to social isolation, declining school performance, behavioral problems, and other issues that can impact both current quality of life and future functioning. The most critical element of trauma among adolescents is reflected in a number of dysfunctional living patterns, including juvenile arrests, decreased academic performance, increased drug, alcohol and sex abuse, increased levels of family dysfunction, and thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts. Treatment may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), which help reduce the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as well as promote positive changes in behavior and skills development for managing anxiety and depression.
