Project Title: Generation Genius Authors
Project Description:

As you know, the goal of the Generation Genius Authors (GGA) Program is to cultivate an interest and passion for reading by showing students that reading can be fun. We introduce students to popular authors, send them home with a signed book to start their own personal library, and inspire within them a love for reading. Reading can open up new worlds to children and personal encounters with authors can give writing a life beyond the book. We are empowering children to identify with accomplished professionals, encouraging them to dream, and inspiring them with great literature, are the goals of the GGA program.

The Miami Book Fair thanks you for your previous support of the GGA program. Last year, we offered 31 sessions to 5,785 public school students from 145 Miami-Dade and Broward County schools. Additionally, we brought authors to 42 local schools to reach an additional 3,170 students unable to attend the Book Fair and also conducted two writing workshops. This year, we also conducted four writing workshops for more than 100 students and again hosted the Teen Press Conference (modeled after the successful event held at the National Book Awards each year) for 150 students. In total 9,000+ students from South Florida schools participated in the 2016 Generation Genius program.

In 2016, for the first time we were able to provide every student who attended an on campus GGA session with a free book. This is a critically important goal because according to 2016 post-surveys, 76% of kids had read the book they received at the fair within ten days or said they plan to read it soon. We know that access to books is vital to encouraging a love of reading. GGA encourages that love through face time with authors and access to their literary works.
