Project Title: El Sol’s School for Parents
Project Description:
El Sol’s School for Parents program is designed to support local families in building healthy family dynamics by providing a safe and welcoming place to access information and support. This program will be a reliable source of information and training for families that are often isolated from crucial services and networks, due to their income level, low-literacy level, lack of language skills, and cultural background.
The project will support roughly 100 families living in Jupiter per year, and will be held at a local child-care facility. The 10-week program will include the following topics: the family unit and the role of parents, child development, responsible parenting, the consequences of alcohol abuse for family health, family separation, understanding the American culture, parenting and schools, and the importance of positive communication. Activities for children are provided so that both parents can attend and participate in the classes.
The majority of our clients are immigrants and day-laborers who have relocated to Florida due to extreme poverty in their home country. On average, they have an elementary level education and more than 60% do not speak English. Unfortunately, these circumstances create a large gap within our community that our clients struggle to overcome. This program is a way for our organization to ensure that the families we serve are living socially, financially and emotionally stable lives and that they integrate positively in our community.
This program aligns with the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s program guidelines as it aims to create nurturing environments for children. We believe communication and understanding between parents and children is crucial in maintaining healthy family dynamics. Your support will help us fund the cost of providing free childcare, supervision, and planned curriculum for several age groups of children during School for Parents sessions.
