Project Title: Generation Genius Authors Program
Project Description:

As you know, the goal of the Generation Genius Authors (GGA) Program is to cultivate an interest and passion for reading by showing students that reading can be fun. We introduce students to popular authors, send them home with a signed book to start their own personal library, and inspire within them a love for reading. Reading can open up new worlds to children and the GGA program is empowering children to identify with accomplished professionals, encouraging them to dream, and inspiring them with great literature.

The Miami Book Fair thanks you for your support of the upcoming 2016 Generation Genius Authors program. Last year we offered 28 sessions to 6,173 public school students from 120 Miami-Dade and Broward County schools. Additionally, we brought authors to 32 local schools to reach an additional 2,311 students unable to attend the Book Fair and also conducted two writing workshops. This year, we expanded the GGA program by incorporating a new Teen Press Conference, which was modeled after the successful event held at the National Book Awards each year. In total, 8,484 students from South Florida schools participated in the 2015 Generation Genius program and we distributed 4,343 free books, 3% more than in 2014.

However, student participation continues to increase leaving half of the kids without a book. Our goal is to raise an additional $33,000 each year to ensure all students get a book to take home. This is critical because according to 2015 post-surveys, 47% of kids had read the book they received at the fair within ten days. Another 44% said they plan to read it soon. We know that access to books is vital to encouraging a love of reading. GGA encourages that love through face time with authors and access to their literary works.

Project Title: Summer Camp Scholarships
Project Description:

We request $5,000 for summer camp scholarships at Seagull Academy for Independent Living (SAIL) for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

SAIL Summer Camp runs for 7 weeks and provides a safe alternative with stimulating activities in a familiar environment where students can continue individual task development. Reinforcement of skills and year-round learning is particularly valuable for children with disabilities.

Summer camp also serves as a transitional opportunity for incoming SAIL students. Students attending camp become familiar with the facility, policies and staff; as well as meet other SAIL students prior to the start of the school year. This facilitates transition and accelerates adaptation and skill development.

SAIL has operated summer camp since 2004. Scholarships were first provided in 2014 and we saw participation double. Approximately 80% of SAIL students come from families whose income is at or below the federal poverty designation of $24,300 per year for a family of 4.

2015 scholarships exceeded 2014 awards by 8.5% and the average scholarship per student more than doubled. Approximately 25% of campers this year received scholarships. However, we still turned away 20 students due to lack of funds and several students could not afford to continue for the 2nd camp session.

SAIL school year enrollment hovers about 60 students. In an environment where 80% of students come from low and very low income households, we are concerned about where and with whom the other 40 SAIL students spend their summers. Families face leaving children with disabilities home alone so they can work. We\’re also concerned about students having adequate food without access to free school breakfast and lunches.

Camp provides a nurturing educational and social environment and provides an alternative to youth being on the streets or in their rooms in front of the TV all summer.

Project Title: Capital Partners for Education’s Mentoring and College Success Program
Project Description:

By 2020, it is estimated that 76% of jobs in the D.C. area will require a post-secondary degree. Without this credential, low-income students cannot access the high-wage, high-growth jobs that would allow them to break the multi-generational cycle of poverty that exists in their community. CPE serves students from some of the most under-resourced communities in the DC area. The average annual income for a CPE family of four is about $31,000 and approximately 80% of CPE students are first generation to college.

CPE provides a structured continuum of one-on-one mentoring, academic support and career preparation services to improve the futures of low-income high school and college students. CPE achieves this by helping them obtain a high-quality high school education, so that they can enroll in and graduate from college, and enter a sustainable career. CPE is high-touch based on intensive relationships among our students, mentors, and staff. Mentors commit to a mentoring relationship for two years, and many exceed that requirement. CPE’s program outcomes demonstrate a strong track record of success: Over 97% of CPE students enroll in college, and 70% complete college on time.

Funds from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will allow CPE to increase the number of students it serves, and to recruit, train, and strategically match more college-educated, volunteer mentors with these students. These mentors serve as role models and resources for our students, helping them develop the critical academic, career, and life skills needed to be successful in 21st century jobs. Additionally, these funds will allow CPE to provide targeted individualized staff support, college and career readiness workshops, and guidance through the college and the financial aid application processes to an even larger pool of qualified students.

Project Description:

Our exceptional therapy dogs continue to be in high demand. Thanks to funding from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation last year we were able to deploy additional therapy dog teams to work with several schools, hospitals and special needs facilities.

This year we would like to continue our work with children as well as add some more teams to meet the ever growing waiting list for our services.

The therapy dog project for which we are requesting funds will make a difference in the lives of children by providing many health benefits and life improvements.

Recruitment materials will be developed to use at community outreach events. Partnerships will be made with local veterinarians, groomers and dog training facilities. Seminars and trainings will be held to better educate our volunteers on how to work with diverse populations and the appropriate interactions based on the population being served. Project Title: Sunrise Day Camp Scholarship
Project Description:

Sunrise Day Camps are the world’s only dedicated day camps for children with cancer and their siblings, provided completely free of charge.

Providing memorable summers since 2006 for children ages 3½ –16, Sunrise Day Camps bring the simple pleasures of childhood back to children struggling with cancer, changing months of loneliness and isolation into summers filled with sunshine, laughter and happiness. And because Sunrise is a day camp, it does all this while allowing the children to continue their medical treatment and enjoy the comfort and safety of their own homes at night. There are currently four Sunrise Day Camps — two in New York (on Long Island & in Pearl River) and two in Israel (Even Yehuda & Be’er Sheva). This summer, two new camps will open in Staten Island, NY, and Baltimore, MD. Sunrise Day Camps are affiliated with 25 renowned hospitals and medical centers. Sunrise Sundays and Fun-days offer children exciting activities and events when school is not in session; Sunrise on Wheels is a one-of-a-kind program that provides hours of Sunrise-fun to children undergoing treatment in pediatric oncology units of participating hospitals.

Your gift would allow more children to experience Sunrise Day Camps which are proud members of the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings world-wide, through the creation of Sunrise Day Camps, Year-Round Programs and In-Hospital Recreational Activities, all offered free of charge.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/10/2016
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: In Jacob’s Shoes
Project Description:

Children in poverty are forced to attend school with worn, ill-fitting shoes which is unhealthy, distracting, and oftentimes embarrassing. Many serious health conditions can be absorbed through the feet when soles are worn or missing; walking to school can be painful and prevent children from attending class at all. These children rarely get a new pair of shoes for back-to-school, and many are forced to share shoes with a sibling. School supplies run out and leave children unprepared to learn; shoes and uniforms for sports programs are often too expensive, limiting opportunities for physical activity as well as social growth.

If funded, In Jacob’s Shoes would use this grant to provide new shoes, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear as wells as grants for camp, aftercare, sports and enrichment programs for children and youth who are homeless or at the risk of being homeless, living in poverty, who are on reduced or free lunch, living in shelters, living in foster care or who have “aged-out” of foster care from birth to age 21.

In Jacob’s Shoes distributes annually 15,000-20,000 pairs of shoes and 500-750 backpacks with school supplies in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties at back-to-school events; year-‘round through shoe “closets” at Title I Schools; or by request from over 110 partner schools, shelters, charities and social service organizations. Each $10 buys a new pair of shoes and each $15 buys a backpack with school supplies for a child in need. Activity grants are provided to afterschool programs, homeless shelters or foster shelters for the children in their care. The total activity grant budget for 2016 is $3,500. Any amount granted would go a long way towards giving these children the ability to walk with pride among their peers, and go to school or play sports with dignity.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/4/16
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Children’s Trauma Counseling
Project Description:

The mission of the Center for Trauma Counseling is to ensure the immediate availability of cost-effective mental health intervention to serve “in need” community residents impacted by trauma-related experiences.

Children’s Therapy: Traditional talk therapy as well as Play and/or Sand Tray therapies will generally be employed with children ages 3 through 11, as it provides a way for them to express their experiences and feelings. Children\’s experiences and knowledge are often communicated through play. Our FirstPlay Certified therapist observing the patterns of play, and the child’s willingness to interact, can understand the underlying rationale for behavior both inside and outside the session, and then work to help the child through his or her issues. Children who receive appropriate and early mental health intervention have more positive interaction with peers, perform better in school, and are less-likely to drop out in their high school years.

Adolescent Therapy: Talk and more advanced forms of therapy will be provided to adolescents ages 11 and up. Struggling with the effects of a traumatic event during adolescence can lead to social isolation, declining school performance, behavioral problems, and other issues that can impact both current quality of life and future functioning. The most critical element of trauma among adolescents is reflected in a number of dysfunctional living patterns, including juvenile arrests, decreased academic performance, increased drug, alcohol and sex abuse, increased levels of family dysfunction, and thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts. Treatment may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), which help reduce the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as well as promote positive changes in behavior and skills development for managing anxiety and depression.
