Project Title: In Jacob’s Shoes
Project Description:
Children in poverty are forced to attend school with worn, ill-fitting shoes which is unhealthy, distracting, and oftentimes embarrassing. Many serious health conditions can be absorbed through the feet when soles are worn or missing; walking to school can be painful and prevent children from attending class at all. These children rarely get a new pair of shoes for back-to-school, and many are forced to share shoes with a sibling. School supplies run out and leave children unprepared to learn; shoes and uniforms for sports programs are often too expensive, limiting opportunities for physical activity as well as social growth.
If funded, In Jacob’s Shoes would use this grant to provide new shoes, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear as wells as grants for camp, aftercare, sports and enrichment programs for children and youth who are homeless or at the risk of being homeless, living in poverty, who are on reduced or free lunch, living in shelters, living in foster care or who have “aged-out” of foster care from birth to age 21.
In Jacob’s Shoes distributes annually 15,000-20,000 pairs of shoes and 500-750 backpacks with school supplies in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties at back-to-school events; year-‘round through shoe “closets” at Title I Schools; or by request from over 110 partner schools, shelters, charities and social service organizations. Each $10 buys a new pair of shoes and each $15 buys a backpack with school supplies for a child in need. Activity grants are provided to afterschool programs, homeless shelters or foster shelters for the children in their care. The total activity grant budget for 2016 is $3,500. Any amount granted would go a long way towards giving these children the ability to walk with pride among their peers, and go to school or play sports with dignity.
