Project Title: Children’s Trauma Counseling
Project Description:
The mission of the Center for Trauma Counseling is to ensure the immediate availability of cost-effective mental health intervention to serve “in need” community residents impacted by trauma-related experiences.
Children’s Therapy: Traditional talk therapy as well as Play and/or Sand Tray therapies will generally be employed with children ages 3 through 11, as it provides a way for them to express their experiences and feelings. Children\’s experiences and knowledge are often communicated through play. Our FirstPlay Certified therapist observing the patterns of play, and the child’s willingness to interact, can understand the underlying rationale for behavior both inside and outside the session, and then work to help the child through his or her issues. Children who receive appropriate and early mental health intervention have more positive interaction with peers, perform better in school, and are less-likely to drop out in their high school years.
Adolescent Therapy: Talk and more advanced forms of therapy will be provided to adolescents ages 11 and up. Struggling with the effects of a traumatic event during adolescence can lead to social isolation, declining school performance, behavioral problems, and other issues that can impact both current quality of life and future functioning. The most critical element of trauma among adolescents is reflected in a number of dysfunctional living patterns, including juvenile arrests, decreased academic performance, increased drug, alcohol and sex abuse, increased levels of family dysfunction, and thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts. Treatment may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), which help reduce the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as well as promote positive changes in behavior and skills development for managing anxiety and depression.
