Project Title: Generation Genius Authors Program
Project Description:

As you know, the goal of the Generation Genius Authors (GGA) Program is to cultivate an interest and passion for reading by showing students that reading can be fun. We introduce students to popular authors, send them home with a signed book to start their own personal library, and inspire within them a love for reading. Reading can open up new worlds to children and the GGA program is empowering children to identify with accomplished professionals, encouraging them to dream, and inspiring them with great literature.

The Miami Book Fair thanks you for your support of the upcoming 2016 Generation Genius Authors program. Last year we offered 28 sessions to 6,173 public school students from 120 Miami-Dade and Broward County schools. Additionally, we brought authors to 32 local schools to reach an additional 2,311 students unable to attend the Book Fair and also conducted two writing workshops. This year, we expanded the GGA program by incorporating a new Teen Press Conference, which was modeled after the successful event held at the National Book Awards each year. In total, 8,484 students from South Florida schools participated in the 2015 Generation Genius program and we distributed 4,343 free books, 3% more than in 2014.

However, student participation continues to increase leaving half of the kids without a book. Our goal is to raise an additional $33,000 each year to ensure all students get a book to take home. This is critical because according to 2015 post-surveys, 47% of kids had read the book they received at the fair within ten days. Another 44% said they plan to read it soon. We know that access to books is vital to encouraging a love of reading. GGA encourages that love through face time with authors and access to their literary works.
