Project Title: Rehousing Homeless Families
Project Description:

NHC’s Rapid Rehousing (RRH) program is a child-centered intervention designed to stabilize children and youth (ages 0–21) experiencing homelessness by quickly reconnecting their families to safe, permanent housing. Homelessness is a childhood disruption with lifelong consequences—impacting education, health, and future economic stability. RRH addresses this critical period by minimizing the duration of homelessness and restoring stability when it matters most.
Through rapid stabilization, RRH reduces children’s exposure to unsafe environments and restores routine and predictability. By rehousing families quickly, NHC helps children remain in their school of origin, promoting school stability, and improving attendance and academic performance. Stable housing also contributes to reduced trauma and toxic stress, leading to stronger behavioral and mental health outcomes and increasing the likelihood of long-term self-sufficiency.
NHC’s approach meets the developmental needs of children and youth at every stage. For children ages 0–5, the program supports early childhood stability and healthy development during formative years. For youth ages 6–17, RRH prioritizes school continuity and reduced absenteeism to support academic success. For young adults ages 18–21, the program focuses on preventing youth homelessness and supporting transitions to independence.
By stabilizing families, NHC addresses the root of child and youth homelessness. Preventing family homelessness is the most effective way to ensure children can thrive. RRH not only provides housing—it creates the foundation for lifelong stability, educational attainment, and well-being.
Funding for NHC’s Rapid Rehousing program is critical to ensuring that children and youth experiencing homelessness can quickly regain stability during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives. Without sufficient resources, families face prolonged homelessness, increasing children’s exposure to trauma, school disruption, and long-term developmental harm. As demand continues to outpace available resources, additional funding is essential to reach more families before short-term crises become lifelong barriers.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 24, 2026
Requested Amount: 8,000

Project Title: Childhood Cancer Safety Net Program
Project Description:

Dear Members of the Hermanowski Family Foundation,

We respectfully submit this Letter of Interest requesting $8,000.00 to support our Childhood Cancer Safety Net Program for a twelve-month period serving children and families across North and South Carolina. Requested funds will be dedicated exclusively to program costs, and a detailed budget can be provided upon request.

Across both states, families of children with cancer frequently face significant geographic barriers to accessing appropriate pediatric oncology care. Specialized treatment is only available at a limited number of hospitals, requiring families, particularly those in rural and underserved communities, to travel long distances for care that is intensive, prolonged, and time sensitive. With your support, we will help ensure that every child diagnosed with cancer in North and South Carolina can access the treatment their oncologist recommends, regardless of location, duration of treatment, or family income.

Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will allow us to reimburse treatment relatedd travel expenses and ensure the availability of our Family Navigators, who providehands-onon assistance throughout a child’s treatment journey. This support includes processing reimbursement requests quickly; helping families enroll in Medicaid; assisting with private insurance navigation; coordinating complex treatment travel across North and South Carolina and neighboring states; offering emotional support during periods of extreme stress; and connecting families to peer-to-peer support networks. Together, these services help stabilize families so they can focus on their child’s care rather than the burdens created by distance.

Children across North and South Carolina often travel 60–90 miles or more each way to reach pediatric specialty hospitals, adding financial strain, lost wages, and emotional exhaustion to an already overwhelming diagnosis. Our goal is to ensure that no child’s cancer outcome is determined by geography or family income. Since 2015, we have reimbursed 100% of qualified expenses submitted by participating families, including mileage, meals, lodging, and related costs, and we remain committed to maintaining this standard of support.

We would be honored to partner with the Hermanowski Family Foundation to ensure that children with cancer across North and South Carolina can access lifesaving treatment without financial or geographic barriers.

Project Title: Community-based Mentorship
Project Description:

Paper City Mentoring Project’s (PCMP) Community-Based Mentorship Program is dedicated to empowering youth in rural Appalachian Ross County, Ohio by building meaningful, one-to-one relationships with caring adult mentors. In a region where young people often face barriers such as limited access to resources, transportation challenges, and economic hardship, PCMP provides consistent support, encouragement, and opportunity through mentorship rooted in connection and community.

Our program thoughtfully matches youth with trained, background-checked adult mentors who commit to spending intentional time together each month. These mentor-mentee pairs engage in activities that reflect the young person’s interests, whether that’s exploring local parks, attending community events, working on school goals, or simply sharing a meal and conversation. Through these experiences, mentors help youth build confidence, develop life skills, and expand their vision for the future.

What sets PCMP apart is our deep understanding of the unique strengths and challenges of Appalachian communities. We believe that mentorship is not a one-size-fits-all approach; it must be relational, flexible, and rooted in trust. Our staff provides ongoing support, training, and resources to ensure both mentors and mentees feel equipped and connected throughout their journey.

At its core, PCMP’s Community-Based Mentorship Program is about showing up, consistently and compassionately, for young people who need someone in their corner. By fostering positive relationships and creating a sense of belonging, we are helping youth discover their potential and equipping them to thrive in their schools, relationships, and communities. Through mentorship, we are building a stronger, more hopeful future for Ross County, one relationship at a time.

The primary objective of this project is to deliver my age-appropriate books to children involved in the foster care system. This initiative will provide my books that children can begin and continue over time, helping them build literacy skills, confidence, and a sense of ownership in their learning.

In addition to books, Lena’s Adventures will provide clothing and basic supplies to children in need. Access to appropriate clothing supports self-esteem, comfort, and a sense of normalcy, which is especially important for children navigating difficult transitions.

These resources will be distributed during supervised visitation services and community-based outreach efforts. The program will also encourage reading and positive engagement during visits, allowing children and their families to share meaningful experiences through my books and structured activities.

Through this project, Lena’s Adventures aims to support both the educational and emotional needs of foster youth by providing consistent access to my books, clothing, and essential items.
