Project Title: Childhood Cancer Safety Net Program
Project Description:

Dear Members of the Hermanowski Family Foundation,

We respectfully submit this Letter of Interest requesting $8,000.00 to support our Childhood Cancer Safety Net Program for a twelve-month period serving children and families across North and South Carolina. Requested funds will be dedicated exclusively to program costs, and a detailed budget can be provided upon request.

Across both states, families of children with cancer frequently face significant geographic barriers to accessing appropriate pediatric oncology care. Specialized treatment is only available at a limited number of hospitals, requiring families, particularly those in rural and underserved communities, to travel long distances for care that is intensive, prolonged, and time sensitive. With your support, we will help ensure that every child diagnosed with cancer in North and South Carolina can access the treatment their oncologist recommends, regardless of location, duration of treatment, or family income.

Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will allow us to reimburse treatment relatedd travel expenses and ensure the availability of our Family Navigators, who providehands-onon assistance throughout a child’s treatment journey. This support includes processing reimbursement requests quickly; helping families enroll in Medicaid; assisting with private insurance navigation; coordinating complex treatment travel across North and South Carolina and neighboring states; offering emotional support during periods of extreme stress; and connecting families to peer-to-peer support networks. Together, these services help stabilize families so they can focus on their child’s care rather than the burdens created by distance.

Children across North and South Carolina often travel 60–90 miles or more each way to reach pediatric specialty hospitals, adding financial strain, lost wages, and emotional exhaustion to an already overwhelming diagnosis. Our goal is to ensure that no child’s cancer outcome is determined by geography or family income. Since 2015, we have reimbursed 100% of qualified expenses submitted by participating families, including mileage, meals, lodging, and related costs, and we remain committed to maintaining this standard of support.

We would be honored to partner with the Hermanowski Family Foundation to ensure that children with cancer across North and South Carolina can access lifesaving treatment without financial or geographic barriers.
