Project Title: Arts Enrichment Partnership with Chama Valley Independent School District
Project Description:

Chama Valley Arts welcomes Chama Valley Independent School students, grades Pre-k through 8th, to the arts center during school hours to do hands-on arts exploration. In SY 23/24 and SY 24/25 we hosted as many as 65 students in a day, 8-16 days during the school year. In SY 25/26 they asked that we go to Tierra Amarilla Elementary to work with PreK – 6th grade while Chama Elementary and Middle (K – 8th grade) still travel to the arts center. We have served about 175 students during school hours this school year.

In the year to come, Chama Valley Arts will maintain the program and increase capacity to pay for supplies and contract with high-caliber teaching artists from across the region, renewing our relationship with the Santa Fe Opera Alto project and with the NM School for the Arts. We always incorporate music and movement, as well as utilize the core principles of social emotional learning. Projects include visual arts, ceramics, mosaics, paper craft, fiber arts; culminating with an exhibit/celebration at the arts center.

The core of all of our work is that within the creative process, children and adults can learn to navigate self-doubt, feelings of worthlessness, and self-exploration which bring about a sense of confidence and self-efficacy carrying over into all aspects of life. This process can be vital in supporting success for our students who, because of life circumstances and developmental differences, rarely experience success in school. In order to try hard things, we have to feel that we have a chance of success. Our programs provide ALL students, including those who are slipping through the cracks, with the space to try, fail, and try again; with the space to explore, learn through play, and extend that learning into other areas of their lives.

Project Title: Care for Minors
Project Description:

In 2025, our agency served 106 unduplicated patients that were between the ages of 15-21 years of age. Due to their age, they are not paying for their visits and services, or are paying very less, depending on their income; our agency charges based on a sliding fee scale. While we exist for this purpose as a non-profit, we lose over $100,000 a year in write offs but still have to pay out of pocket for supplies, providers, etc… Ability to provide these services ensures that these individuals can focus on their education, their current family, and/or their employment.

Project Title: Ubuntu Youth Leadership & Wellness Initiative
Project Description:

The Ubuntu Youth Leadership & Wellness Initiative is a culturally responsive program designed to support immigrant and refugee youth ages 10–24 and their families in building leadership skills, strengthening mental health, and preparing for academic and life success. Rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu—“I am because we are”—the program fosters connection, belonging, and collective growth.

Vitendo 4 Africa (V4A), an organization for immigrants by immigrants, serves over 30,000 individuals from 27 nationalities across St. Louis and six additional states. As the only organization in the region focused specifically on African immigrant families, V4A addresses critical barriers such as language access, cultural adjustment, social isolation, and limited access to trusted resources.

Through this initiative, youth participate in structured mentorship, leadership development workshops, and college readiness activities, including organized visits to local universities to increase exposure to higher education opportunities. The program also integrates mental health education and culturally grounded wellness practices, such as drum circles and group discussions, to promote healing, resilience, and social connection.

Funding will support program coordination, workshop facilitation, educational materials, and transportation assistance to ensure consistent participation. It will also strengthen access to mental health support through community-based approaches that are culturally relevant and stigma-reducing.

By creating safe, inclusive spaces and equipping youth with knowledge, confidence, and support networks, the Ubuntu Youth Leadership & Wellness Initiative empowers participants to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally while becoming leaders within their families and communities.

Project Title: Expanded access to bike safety and skills
Project Description:

Ride Krew aims to increase overall access to bike safety education and basic bike skills by partnering with schools across Southern California. We intend to bring our bike fleet and coaches directly to schools to provide in school and afterschool programming to youth ages 5-18. We see the importance of learning these skills early in order to increase confidence on and off the bike, to open the door to exploring outdoors, and to increase safe transportation options for youth and families.
Ride Krew creates inclusive environments where every child—regardless of experience level, background, or financial circumstance—can participate and succeed. Through structured instruction, mentorship from trained coaches, and progressive skill development, participants learn not only how to ride safely and confidently but also how to overcome challenges, support their peers, and take ownership of their growth. These experiences translate beyond the bike, helping youth develop discipline, perseverance, and self-belief that benefit them in school and everyday life.
Equally important is our commitment to expanding access to outdoor recreation and healthy activity. Many young people today face barriers to participating in sports or spending time outdoors due to cost, limited resources, or increasing screen time. Ride Krew would continue to support this with our offering of scholarships and bike loan programs, and intentionally bringing free programming to communities that may otherwise lack access to these opportunities.
We aim to work with 10+ unique schools in the coming year to bring unique programming and coaching to them dependent upon their communities needs.

The Project Reclaim Youth Leadership Academy is a juvenile delinquency prevention-based program which utilizes academic support through our Afterschool Academy, leadership and social skills training through the Youth Leadership Academy, parental involvement and parenting education programs for parents and guardians of our youth, and the Project Reclaim TV media training program. The goal of our program is to help our youth to become positive and contributing members of society by assisting them in remaining in school; promoting to their next grade level; remaining free from involvement in juvenile delinquency and juvenile court; and remaining free from involvement in teen pregnancy. For last school year, the following outcomes were obtained by our 72 participants: 100% remained in school; 99% promoted to their next grade level; 100% were not involved in juvenile court; and 100% remained free from involvement in teen pregnancy. Our program structure of providing homework assistance and tutoring in the Afterschoool Academy, leadership and social skills training in the Youth Leadership Academy, parental involvement and parent training via our Parent University/”Raising Winners!” component has yielded similar outcomes for the past 18 years. In Project Reclaim TV, our youth learn interviewing techniques, camera operation, set design and editing. This component serves to increase their self-concepts, and provides positive validation for our young leaders.

Project Title: Reading Mentors
Project Description:

Reading Mentors serves students in grades 3–8 who are reading an average of three levels behind their peers due to learning differences, gaps in schooling, or a native language other than English. Students receive 1:1 support via an assistive technology, Learning Ally, delivered by Shadow Project staff and trained volunteers. In weekly sessions, mentors help kids set manageable goals and celebrate their progress every step of the way. With Learning Ally’s audiovisual features, kids are finally able to access books that interest and challenge them. As they discover what they can achieve, their confidence and motivation increases, and they’re more willing to persevere when reading feels hard: “I actually love reading! I can read a series now from book 1 to book 4.”
Partners receive a schoolwide Learning Ally license and specialized training so that both mentored and non-mentored students can take advantage of disabilities-specific reading technology. With assistive tools, strengths-based practice, and individualized attention, even the most discouraged readers build the skills and confidence needed to engage more with their schoolwork, participate more in class, and discover the joy of reading.
In the 2026-27 school year, Reading Mentors will deliver weekly support to 100–125 students in the Centennial School District, where 3rd grade reading proficiency has averaged 28% since 2022. We will also provide Learning Ally access to another 200-400 students and train district specialists to support them in using the platform.
Based on Reading Mentors’ performance since 2022, we expect most students to build independent reading habits, two-thirds to increase confidence and enthusiasm for reading, and half to improve proficiency by at least one grade level. Equally important, Reading Mentors is an emotional anchor for students who often struggle to engage at school: “For some students, it’s the best 15 minutes of their day.”

Project Title: Children and Youth Mental Wellness Program
Project Description:

The Children and Youth Mental Wellness Program serves Palm Beach County (PBC) children/youth 3-21 who cannot obtain care otherwise due to inability to afford. The need for affordable, easily accessible mental healthcare services remains high. In 2025, 248 children/youth 3-18 and their families/caregivers received services; 125 aboard the MHC and 123 in office and/or telehealth.

Quality mental wellness services help children/youth suffering from trauma regulate their emotions, stop self-harming behaviors, suicidal ideation/attempts, and prevents costly, additionally traumatic inpatient placement.

For PBC’s most in-need children/youth, services are:

• FREE to those who qualify
• provided by qualified therapists experienced in child/youth trauma
• offered in English/Spanish/Creole
• available without a waitlist
• easily accessible through our ‘avenues to care’; in-office/telehealth/MHC

Funding supports direct mental healthcare services to children/youth (3-21) where services are easiest to access for the client (in-office/telehealth/MHC). The MHC has demonstrated great success in expanding services to PBC’s most in-need children/youth. Operating on the agency’s highly successful ‘community-partner model’, the MHC serves children/youth on-site at partner agencies where they already visit for other needs, thereby eliminating transportation barriers to come to us. The MHC continues providing services each week at 4 PBC Boys & Girls Clubs (Boca/Delray/West Palm/Riviera Beach) to children/youth in their after-school programs. The agency continually seeks new MHC partners where more in-need children/youth can be served.

Clients without insurance/living below poverty level are offered 8-10 FREE sessions. Those that do not qualify for free sessions are offered extremely reduced rates based on a sliding scale starting at $45 per session.

The agency is very grateful for the generous $8,000 award from the Hermanowski Family Foundation for services in 2026 and deeply appreciates being considered for continuing support in 2027. An award of $10,000 will support 57 hours of free/low-cost mental healthcare services to in need PBC children/youth (3-21).

Project Title: Spring and Winter Art Camp Scholarships
Project Description:

Grant funds will be used to support programmatic costs associated with providing scholarships for students ages 4–12 to attend The Bass’s Spring and Winter Art Camps, taking place March 22–26, 2027, and December 21–23 and December 28–30, 2027, in Miami Beach. Camp activities will feature themed visual arts experiences designed to introduce participants to the IDEAS process and principles of Design Thinking. Through design challenges, hands-on artmaking, and collaborative projects, students will build creative confidence while developing critical 21st-century skills such as problem-solving, communication, and innovation.

Scholarships for The Bass’s Spring and Winter Art Camps will expand access to these transformative learning opportunities during key school breaks, when many families lack structured and affordable enrichment options. For working families, these periods can present financial and logistical challenges. By covering tuition, art materials, meals, and transportation, The Bass ensures that children who might otherwise be unable to participate can fully engage in a nurturing and inspiring environment.

The Bass has a proven track record of success through its IDEAS Summer Art Camps. The IDEAS framework—Identify, Discuss, Envision, Apply, and Share—integrates artmaking, gallery experiences, and workshops that use artworks as catalysts for creative and critical thinking. This summer program consistently provides more than 30 full scholarships each year, with strong outcomes reflected in increasing return rates. Most recently, 51% of campers returned, up from 42% in 2025.

With this grant, The Bass will provide 25 week-long scholarships, including before and after care as needed. Each session will include all materials, daily meals, and a culminating student exhibition, expanding equitable access to high-quality arts education.
