Project Title: College READY
Project Description:

Grace & Mercy Center of Hope’s College READY initiative equips disadvantaged and underrepresented college students with the academic, personal, and leadership skills necessary for persistence and successful post-graduation transition.
The program operates through two developmentally aligned tracks: READY to Build (Freshmen & Sophomores), which focuses on foundational readiness and self-management, and READY to Thrive (Juniors & Seniors), which emphasizes leadership development, career preparation, and workforce transition.
College READY is guided by a structured five-module framework that integrates goal setting, resilience development, academic and professional skill-building, leadership growth, and reflective practice. Students progress through a phased implementation model that moves them from self-assessment and vision-setting to applied skill development and demonstrated competency.
READY to Build strengthens academic planning, time management, communication, emotional regulation, financial literacy, and identity development—critical skills that support retention during the most vulnerable college years. READY to Thrive advances executive presence, collaboration, conflict resolution, networking, and post-graduation planning to ensure students are prepared to enter the workforce with confidence and clarity.
Program success is measured through participation rates, skill acquisition benchmarks, self-efficacy assessments, academic persistence indicators, and demonstrated career readiness outcomes.
Through College READY, students gain more than knowledge; they build resilience, leadership capacity, and a clear pathway toward academic completion and long-term professional success.

Project Title: Books
Project Description:

Books for Educators is one of Madison Reading Project’s long-standing core literacy programs and has been serving local educators and students for several years. In 2025 alone, the program served 1,199 K–12 teachers across Greater Dane County with 32,635 brand-new, culturally and linguistically diverse books at no cost. These resources have strengthened classroom libraries, increased student access to inclusive reading materials, and supported educators, particularly
those in under-resourced schools, who often lack funding for new books.
Teacher feedback consistently shows increased student engagement, stronger connections to reading, and more inclusive classroom environments as a result of the program.
Books for Educators is currently funded through a combination of foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, individual donors, and community fundraising campaigns. Additional funding from
the Hermanowski Foundation would allow Madison Reading Project to expand the number of educators served, increase the range of culturally responsive and multilingual titles available, and reach more teachers in under-resourced schools. The investment from The Hermanowski Foundation would build on proven success by sustaining and scaling equitable access to books while deepening the program’s impact on literacy outcomes across our community.

Total Project Budget: 150000

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Dexter-Linwood Cordon Food Pantry
Project Description:

Demographic Inspirations–Detroit respectfully seeks support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to expand the Dexter-Linwood Cordon Food Pantry Project, a community-based initiative addressing food insecurity among Veterans, seniors, families, and unhoused residents in Northwest Detroit.

The Dexter-Linwood Cordon experiences persistent food access challenges driven by economic hardship, transportation barriers, and limited proximity to full-service grocery stores. Many residents—particularly Veterans and older adults—depend on irregular emergency food resources. This project provides a reliable, neighborhood-centered solution that delivers nutritious food in a dignified and accessible manner.

Grant funds will support the operation and expansion of a secure 20-foot shipping container food pantry, including the purchase of fresh produce, proteins, and shelf-stable food; shelving and storage systems; food safety and sanitation supplies; and distribution materials. The pantry will host regular food distributions serving approximately 300 individuals per event, with the capacity to reach 1,500–2,000 individuals annually.

Demographic Inspirations–Detroit is a Veteran-led nonprofit with more than eleven years of experience implementing community-driven solutions, including blight removal, vacant land reuse, placemaking, and food access programming. The food pantry is a key component of a broader neighborhood revitalization strategy designed to stabilize communities, improve health outcomes, and support housing pathways for Veterans.

Impact will be measured through meals distributed, number of households served, volunteer engagement, and community feedback. Partnerships with local schools, volunteers, and food donors will help ensure efficient operations and sustainability beyond the grant period.

This project addresses immediate hunger while strengthening long-term neighborhood resilience, health, and stability within the Dexter-Linwood Cordon.

Total Project Budget: 10,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Committed Sources • Neighborhood Beautification Grant (NBG) – Support for community cleanup, supplies, and operational capacity • Individual Donations – Community and supporter contributions • In-Kind Support – Volunteer labor and donated materials/equipment from local partners Potential / Pending Sources • Hermanowski Family Foundation – Project support for food pantry operations • Sprouts Farmers Market – Financial or in-kind food sponsorship • Kroger Community Giving – Hunger relief and food access support • Kwik Trip Community Program – Food distribution sponsorship • Lowe’s Community Impact Grant – Materials and supplies for site improvements • Sunbelt Rentals – In-kind equipment sponsorship and discounted rentals • Local Faith-Based & Corporate Partners – Event-based and ongoing support • These combined sources will ensure diversified funding, sustainability, and the successful implementation of the Dexter-Linwood Cordon Food Pantry Project.

Project Duration: October 1, 2026 – September 30, 2027
Geographical Area Served: Demographic Inspirations–Detroit primarily serves residents within the Dexter-Linwood Cordon in Northwest Detroit, specifically within an eight-block boundary micro-slice community in the City of Detroit. Our service area includes the broader neighborhoods with boundaries Dexter to Linwood and M-10 Lodge Service Drive to Fenkell in the zip code 48238. Replicating our initiative, we focus on communities experiencing high rates of food insecurity, vacant land concentration, economic hardship, and limited access to fresh, affordable groceries. While our core programming is centered within this defined Detroit footprint, we also serve: • Low-income families • Seniors • Veterans • Unhoused and housing-insecure individuals • Returning citizens Many individuals travel from adjacent neighborhoods within the City of Detroit to access our food pantry distributions and community programming. Our geographic focus allows us to concentrate on resources in a historically underserved corridor while creating measurable, neighborhood-level impact through food access, land reuse, and Placemaking initiatives.
Age Group To Be Served: Demographic Inspirations–Detroit serves all age groups, with programming intentionally designed to meet the needs of vulnerable and underserved populations within the Dexter-Linwood Cordon corridor. Primary Age Groups Served: • Children & Youth (0–17 years) – Families with school-aged children experiencing food insecurity • Young Adults (18–24 years) – Workforce-entry individuals and returning citizens • Adults (25–59 years) – Low- to moderate-income households, veterans, and unemployed residents • Seniors (60+ years) – Fixed-income residents facing food access and housing instability Special focus is placed on senior citizens and veterans, as both groups represent a significant portion of the households we serve. Our intergenerational approach ensures that food access, community gardening, placemaking activities, and future housing initiatives benefit entire families and strengthen neighborhood stability across all age ranges.

Project Title: The Circle Speaks
Project Description:

The Circle Speaks is a transformative, year-round creative wellness program serving youth and young adults (ages 14–21) experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or unmet mental health needs in Wake County. This initiative integrates arts-based expression, peer support, and trauma-informed wellness strategies to foster resilience, self-efficacy, and social connection among marginalized youth.

Participants engage in weekly creative labs including visual arts, storytelling, movement, and poetry, paired with mindfulness, breathwork, and reflective peer circles. These sessions provide a safe, empowering environment for youth to explore identity, process trauma, and build coping strategies. The program culminates in ongoing community showcases throughout the year, amplifying participant voices, reducing stigma, and promoting public recognition of youth creativity.

The Circle Speaks directly addresses critical gaps in services for unhoused and housing-insecure youth who often lack access to consistent, supportive, and expressive spaces. By centering artistic engagement alongside social and emotional support, the program strengthens emotional resilience, fosters peer networks, and encourages personal and community empowerment.

Nation of Diversity (N.O.D.) brings proven expertise in arts-based youth programming, community engagement, and trauma-informed practice. Partnerships with local social service organizations ensure comprehensive support, including referrals for housing, mental health, and educational resources.

Funding from the Hermanowski Foundation will cover facilitator fees, materials, venue costs, wellness integration tools, and community showcases, enabling direct access and participation for youth. This program aligns fully with the foundation’s mission to improve and transform the lives of young people through arts, education, health, and welfare services, ensuring that participants gain both creative skills and lasting personal growth.
