Project Description:

As a partner of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, the Lashawntay T. Howard Youth Offender Center (LTHYOC) serves youth from Miami-Dade County’s most vulnerable neighborhoods, including Liberty City, Brownsville, and Little Haiti. The System-Involved Youth (SIY) Program will engage 40 youth ages 13–17 who are involved in the juvenile justice system or identified as high-risk due to gang involvement, gun violence exposure, or residence in low-income public housing communities.

The SIY Program uses proven, research-based interventions to address the personal, family, and community factors contributing to delinquency and violence. Grounded in Search Institute’s developmental relationship framework, the program prioritizes equity, trust-building, and evidence-based strategies that strengthen youth protective factors. Research shows that strong developmental relationships improve learning, resilience, and long-term outcomes.

LTHYOC’s Intentional Relationships Workshop supports youth through:
• Increased academic motivation
• Improved social-emotional development (self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness)
• Increased personal responsibility
• Reduced engagement in risky behaviors

By intentionally removing youth from unsafe environments during high-risk afternoon hours and placing them in a structured, supportive setting, the program reduces exposure to street violence while providing mentorship, academic support, and life-skills development.

Using a therapeutic community model, LTHYOC will:

Divert at-risk youth from deeper involvement in the juvenile justice system

Promote youth voice and choice through individualized planning grounded in each participant’s values and goals

Reduce chronic juvenile offending

Increase protective factors that support long-term success

Through structured programming, mentorship, and intentional relationship-building, LTHYOC strengthens youth capacity, improves decision-making, and promotes safer communities across Miami-Dade County.

Project Title: UYKQ Warriors trip to Virginia
Project Description:

Urban Youth Kings and Queens (UYKQ) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers Philadelphia’s underserved youth through sports, educational, and mentoring programs. UYKQ has provided youth programming in Northwest Philadelphia since 2017. Our programmatic goal is to overcome the adversities that prevent young people from achieving their potential and create the next generation of Philadelphia’s community leaders by preparing children for college and beyond.
UYKQ provides out-of-school time (OST) programming in team sports (baseball, softball, basketball), summer camps, and afterschool care to children in North and Northwest Philadelphia. Our OST programs primarily attract children from the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia (zip code 19144), which has a population that is 72% African American and reports a median family household income of $37,056 (compared to $88,347 in the rest of Pennsylvania) and 36.9% poverty level for children 5-17 years (compared to 16.6% nationally). Each UYKQ program seeks to improve academic performance, foster resilience, build character, develop sportsmanship, and teach conflict resolution, health, and wellness skills.
A central component of the mission of our team sports program is to bring opportunities for organized play and competition to Philadelphia children who have not traditionally been served by area teams and leagues. UYKQ brought youth baseball and softball to Germantown – an opportunity that had not existed in decades. Minority participation in baseball, especially among African American children, is at an all-time low. This donation will have immediate impact on our baseball program which services 80% African Americans. It will support our mission to bring new opportunities to the children of Germantown and surrounding neighborhoods by helping cover some cost for our travel to Richmond, Virginia for 40 of our players ages 7 – 10 for a weekend experience of Team Building and Mentorship, tour with Virginia State University Baseball players & coaches, and Enrichment opportunities.

The Clay Youth Meals & Dialogue Initiative is a youth-led community program designed to strengthen connection, leadership, and opportunity among young people in Clay County, Florida. Organized by Local Hands Global Heart, the initiative brings together middle school & high school, youth for structured dialogue events centered around shared meals, mentorship, and civic engagement.

Clay County is a growing community, but many young people lack accessible spaces where they can connect across backgrounds, develop leadership skills, and feel empowered to contribute to their community. This program addresses that gap by creating welcoming, youth-centered gatherings where participants share meals and engage in guided conversations on topics such as personal development, education pathways, community service, and global awareness. The youth will collaborate and carry out food insecurity projects with peers in Ukraine via virual interactions and in person projects.

Each gathering will provide meals, structured dialogue facilitated by trained youth leaders, and opportunities for participants to design and lead their own service projects. The program emphasizes leadership development, confidence building, and social connection. Meals serve as an important foundation for participation, ensuring that all youth—regardless of financial background—can engage in a supportive and inclusive environment.

The initiative will directly serve 75–100 youth in its first year, with plans to expand based on community demand. In addition to dialogue sessions, youth participants will be encouraged to develop and implement local service projects, strengthening their sense of ownership and responsibility within their community.

Founded by a Clay County native and nonprofit leader, this initiative reflects a deep commitment to reinvesting in the next generation of local youth. On behalf of the Mikey 23 Foundation, we would like to express our strong interest in securing support for our housing restoration initiative made possible by the generous donation of a residential property from a local investor. While the home requires substantial repairs and rehabilitation, we view this project as a powerful opportunity to address homelessness while simultaneously equipping young people with meaningful, hands-on construction skills.
