Project Title: Empowering Students: A Special Education Toolkit
Project Description:

Champions for Kids will develop and distribute Empowering Students: A Special Education Advocate Toolkit + Parent Navigation App, a practical resource designed to support children and young adults with disabilities from birth through age 21. The project equips parents, caregivers, and emerging advocates with clear, actionable guidance to navigate the special education process and ensure students receive timely, appropriate services.

The project includes two integrated components. The Special Education Advocate Toolkit will be available in digital and printable formats and written in plain language. It will outline the special education process, parent and student rights under federal law, key timelines and checklists, sample request letters and scripts, documentation templates, and guidance on inclusive practices and early literacy supports. Materials will be culturally responsive and accessible, with translation and readability considerations built in.

The Parent Navigation Mobile App will serve as a “GPS for special education,” guiding families through a complex maze to get support for their children.

Together, the toolkit and app help families apply information in real time—during meetings and critical decision points—reducing delays and strengthening family-school partnerships.

Project Title: STEM Mentoring and 21st Century Skills with C4K
Project Description:

Computers for Kids (C4K) provides free, year-round, one-on-one STEAM mentoring to 140+ youth, grades 6 through 12, from low-income households in Charlottesville and surrounding Central Virginia communities. For 25 years, we’ve been the only organization in our region offering this intensive individual mentorship model, transforming the lives of young people who lack access to technology education and career guidance.

Our mentoring program pairs each student with a dedicated volunteer mentor who meets with them weekly at our community clubhouse. Together, they work on hands-on projects in coding, robotics, 3D design, and engineering, building both technical skills and confidence. Unlike classroom-based programs, our one-on-one approach allows mentors to tailor learning to each student’s interests and pace, creating deep relationships that extend far beyond technical instruction.

The impact is profound: 89% of our students express interest in STEM careers after participating in our programs, compared to just 16% before joining C4K. Many come from households where no adult has attended college, yet our alumni go on to pursue degrees in computer science, engineering, and technology fields. Several have returned as mentors themselves, creating a powerful cycle of opportunity.

This grant will directly support program materials, technology resources, mentor training, and facilitation of our youth development curriculum.

By investing in C4K, the Hermanowski Foundation will help Virginia youth from low-income families gain the tools, skills, and confidence they need to achieve their full potential and build pathways to economic mobility through STEAM education and meaningful mentorship.

Project Title: Connecting Youth with Character-building Extracurricular Activities
Project Description:

New Image Camps for Kids (N.I.C.K. Services), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, connects youth from underserved communities in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania with character-building extracurricular activities they might otherwise miss. Our mission is to help participants gain confidence, discover new interests, and explore nonacademic experiences. We accomplish this by providing supportive spaces where children feel seen and are empowered to build self-assurance, develop leadership skills, and reach their potential.

We partner with local businesses that offer existing community programs, including dance, gymnastics, martial arts, and music. We also provide in-house programs, such as coding and art instruction, at our learning center. Our coding class marks our first step toward expanding the academic offerings in our program lineup. N.I.C.K. Services completely covers class fees for program participants.

N.I.C.K. Services is an individualized solution that pairs aspiring learners with programs that match their unique interests. Our program is tailored to each child’s unique needs, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. We guide youth into thoughtfully chosen programs that welcome them, foster growth, and cultivate their individual talents.

Research compiled by the Afterschool Alliance endorses high-quality afterschool programs and highlights their positive effect on student performance. Studies show a positive correlation between afterschool programs and increased attendance, improved learning engagement, and gains in academic proficiency.
Since 2015, 100% of all money raised has directly supported the children of Lebanon County, thanks to our sponsors and donors. We hope that students in our program identify and pursue new passions.

We respectfully request $8,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to continue providing worthy students with extracurricular activities and expand the programs we offer to these future leaders.

The program partners with U.S. schools and community-based organizations to provide supplemental online tutoring, mentoring, and interest-based learning aligned with students’ academic needs. Project Title: Need Based Scholarship Sponsor
Project Description:

For the past 15 years, Cornerstone has been providing need-based scholarships to families. As the school has grown so has the need for scholarships. We currently have 176 students enrolled in junior kindergarten to 12th grade. Without scholarships a large part of our student body would not be able to afford private education as 42% of our students at Cornerstone get partial scholarships. This school year our scholarship committee distributed over $130,000 in scholarships, providing assistance to 82 students. A grant in the amount of $5000 would provide scholarship funds for at least two students.
Cornerstone equips our students with high quality education in the liberal arts, including an emphasis on STEAM and the ability to articulate ideas and beliefs through training in logic and rhetoric. Our passion is to foster a love for learning in students with service-oriented hearts and creative, sharp minds.
One hallmark of classical Christian schools is a generous tuition assistance program. This assistance makes a CCA education available to a much broader socioeconomic range of families. Even though tuition at CCA is lower than the national average for private Christian schools, there is still a great need in our community to help families be able to afford a Christ centered education for their children.
The funds needed for scholarships are currently raised through generous support of many businesses, organizations, and individual donors. In addition to these contribution Cornerstone hosts three events each year to help raise the funds needed for scholarships. This past year we hosted a fall auction, a spring vision dinner, and a golf tournament. While these events are great for building community with our school family and donor base, they only provide a portion of the money needed for the annual scholarship fund.

Project Title: Creating Homes for Vulnerable Youth & Families
Project Description:

To reduce homelessness and promote healthy outcomes for vulnerable children, Make It Home will transform empty spaces into true homes. Grant funds will be used for operating Make It Home’s furniture bank and transporting items to clients in need, many of whom are moving into stable housing for the first time. For children and youth, a furnished home provides a stable environment where they can thrive. It improves mental and physical health by promoting restful sleep, facilitates family bonding through shared meals, and supports children’s development by offering spaces for play and study. The sense of stability and self-worth that furniture brings enables clients to focus on building their futures instead of struggling with unmet basic needs.

The objectives of Make It Home’s program are to:

1) Provide furniture and household goods to families moving into housing, thereby promoting children’s stability, health, and school performance.

2) Furnish apartments for transition-age foster youth, empowering them as they become independent, confident adults.

3) Serve over 650 households in the San Francisco Bay Area in the coming year.

In order to provide furnishings to youth and families in need, Make It Home will:

1) Gather gently-used furnishings at the furniture bank. Clean, repair, and reupholster as needed.

2) Purchase refurbished mattresses at wholesale prices, as well as new bedding and kitchen items.

3) As requests come in from social service organizations, deliver curated furniture setups to clients.

Total Project Budget: $2,858,402.00

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Make it Home acquires funding via four different strategies . First, MIH holds annual fundraising events and receives contributions from individual donors. Second, MIH pursues grants from private foundations and government entities. Third, MIH receives in-kind furniture donations. Make It Home’s fourth source of revenue is from program services and comes mostly from the fees charged to social service agencies Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Grantors include: Walter S. Johnson Foundation, Peter E. Haas Jr. Family Fund, Gruber Family Foundation, Bernard E. & Alba Witkin Foundation, Goggio Family Foundation, West Davis & Bergard Foundation, Harbor Point Charitable Foundation, and Fred Gellert Family Foundation. Awards have ranged in size, totaling $574K for fiscal year 2024. Make It Home continues to pursue new sources of funding, including foundations, government agencies, and individual contributors in order to serve more families and people in need.

Project Duration: 1 year
Geographical Area Served: San Francisco Bay Area
Age Group To Be Served: Make It Home does not have specific age requirements or limits for its clients. However, Make It Home’s services have helped many families in need: Make It Home has furnished 2,844 households and served 6,870 people–including 2,997 children–since launching 4.5 years ago. Creative Arts Club is an after-school visual arts program for students 5-12 years old. Students in the program learn social emotional skills through the creation of artwork. This class focuses on creativity and the importance of creating community in the art room amongst the children. They work on both independent art projects and in collaboration with other children. Social emotional skills developed in this program include self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, social awareness, and relationship skills.
