Project Title: Creative Arts Club
Project Description:
Creative Arts Club is an after-school visual arts program for students 5-12 years old. Students in the program learn social emotional skills through the creation of artwork. This class focuses on creativity and the importance of creating community in the art room amongst the children. They work on both independent art projects and in collaboration with other children. Social emotional skills developed in this program include self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, social awareness, and relationship skills. Students are gently guided in the themes and techniques that are being focused on during the week, with options to explore art that speaks directly to them. Artistic themes range from self-portraits, shadow painting, still life, comic book creation, mosaics, collage, weaving and textiles, puppets, stop-motion animation, sculpture, and building dioramas and large-scale cityscapes. Student works are showcased each semester to our school community. Church Street School for Music and Art is specifically designed to serve underserved students, including those with physical and developmental disabilities. Currently, the program mixes students with special needs and typically abled children with support from teachers who have experience teaching students with special needs and with the support of assistant teachers. Creative Arts Club serves public school students from New York City, including students from District 75 (the Special Education District) who have low to moderate accommodation needs. Many students that participate in the program are from Lower Manhattan, including Chinatown, which is considered a low-income neighborhood in New York City. This program runs during the school year from September to June with intensive sessions held during vacations and over the summer.
