Project Title: STEM Mentoring and 21st Century Skills with C4K
Project Description:

Computers for Kids (C4K) provides free, year-round, one-on-one STEAM mentoring to 140+ youth, grades 6 through 12, from low-income households in Charlottesville and surrounding Central Virginia communities. For 25 years, we’ve been the only organization in our region offering this intensive individual mentorship model, transforming the lives of young people who lack access to technology education and career guidance.

Our mentoring program pairs each student with a dedicated volunteer mentor who meets with them weekly at our community clubhouse. Together, they work on hands-on projects in coding, robotics, 3D design, and engineering, building both technical skills and confidence. Unlike classroom-based programs, our one-on-one approach allows mentors to tailor learning to each student’s interests and pace, creating deep relationships that extend far beyond technical instruction.

The impact is profound: 89% of our students express interest in STEM careers after participating in our programs, compared to just 16% before joining C4K. Many come from households where no adult has attended college, yet our alumni go on to pursue degrees in computer science, engineering, and technology fields. Several have returned as mentors themselves, creating a powerful cycle of opportunity.

This grant will directly support program materials, technology resources, mentor training, and facilitation of our youth development curriculum.

By investing in C4K, the Hermanowski Foundation will help Virginia youth from low-income families gain the tools, skills, and confidence they need to achieve their full potential and build pathways to economic mobility through STEAM education and meaningful mentorship.
