Project Title: The Agri -STEM outdoor Learning
Project Description:

Research shows that children from underserved communities in Georgia often face limited access to hands-on educational experiences that reinforce classroom learning and build confidence, problem-solving skills, and curiosity. Many students fall behind not because of lack of ability, but because they lack engaging, real-world learning opportunities that make education meaningful and accessible.

Our Agri-STEM Outdoor Learning Program is a one-year educational initiative designed to support academic growth for youth ages 5–19 through experiential, standards-aligned learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Activities will be delivered on the Smith Family Ranch Foundation’s 42-acre outdoor learning site, the program integrates classroom concepts with applied learning in agriculture, environmental science, and food systems.

Students participate in two 12-week cohorts, receiving instruction from trained educators and program facilitators. Weekly sessions include garden-based science labs, soil and plant biology lessons, hydroponics demonstrations, basic engineering challenges, data collection activities, and problem-solving exercises tied to real-world agricultural systems. The program empowers academic skills such as observation, measurement, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication core competencies linked to long-term educational success.

The project will serve 50 youth from low-income families who attend under-resourced schools and have limited access to enrichment programming. Outcomes will include increased STEM knowledge, improved engagement in learning, and strengthened confidence in academic abilities. Progress will be measured through attendance tracking, pre- and post-learning assessments, and instructor observations.

Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will support instructional materials, curriculum supplies, learning tools, and educator stipends, ensuring the program is delivered at no cost to participating families. With this support, underserved youth will gain the educational tools, exposure, and encouragement needed to succeed in school and reach their full potential.

Total Project Budget: $150,000

Project Title: Spanish Suicide Prevention Training in Rural Nevada
Project Description:

The Life Is Worth It Organization respectfully requests $10,000 to expand Spanish-language suicide prevention training in rural Nevada communities. Hispanic and Latino residents in these areas face significant barriers to mental health education and services, including language access, geographic isolation, stigma, and limited culturally responsive resources. These barriers contribute to delayed help-seeking and increased risk for suicide and mental health crises.

Funding will support the delivery of evidence-informed, culturally responsive suicide prevention trainings in Spanish for community members, parents, educators, and youth-serving professionals. Trainings focus on recognizing warning signs, reducing stigma, strengthening protective factors, and increasing awareness of local and statewide crisis resources. Emphasis is placed on building trust, promoting help-seeking behaviors, and equipping participants with practical skills to support individuals at risk.

This investment will directly increase access to life-saving education in underserved rural communities, strengthen community capacity to respond to mental health concerns, and help ensure Spanish-speaking families receive equitable, culturally relevant suicide prevention support.

Project Title: Elevating Navajo Youth
Project Description:

In Window Rock, Arizona, the heart of the Navajo Nation, Navajo youth grow up carrying both deep cultural strength and the heavy weight of isolation, poverty, and intergenerational trauma. Many students travel long distances to school, lack access to consistent adult support, and struggle to imagine a future beyond survival. Elevate Navajo exists to change that story.

Elevate Navajo partners directly with local public schools to embed full-time, salaried Teacher-Mentors inside the school day and far beyond it. These Teacher-Mentors are not visitors or short-term program staff. They are trusted adults, often from the same communities as the students they serve, who teach accredited classes focused on leadership, character, and employability skills while building multi-year mentoring relationships that extend after school, on weekends, and through the summer.

In the classroom, students develop confidence, communication skills, goal-setting habits, and a sense of purpose. Outside the classroom, Teacher-Mentors show up consistently, helping students navigate academic challenges, family responsibilities, grief, and self-doubt. They attend games and ceremonies, meet families, take students on outdoor adventures, and guide them through post-secondary planning, job readiness, and career exploration.

A unique component of Elevate Navajo is Little Elevate, where high school students practice leadership by mentoring younger students, strengthening responsibility, empathy, and pride in their own community.

The results are real and measurable. Before Elevate Navajo’s partnership, only 55% of participating students were on track to graduate. After three semesters, 91% are now on track, because someone noticed them, believed in them, and stayed.

General operating support allows Elevate Navajo to sustain these life-changing relationships, respond flexibly to student needs, and remain a steady presence in a place where consistency can change everything.

Project Title: Hope & Opportunity – Street Outreach Program
Project Description:

Interface Children & Family Services (Interface) seeks continued funding to enhance its Street Outreach Program (SOP), which supports homeless youth across Ventura County, California. The SOP offers a comprehensive continuum of care that addresses the immediate needs of homeless youth while empowering them to create lasting, positive changes in their lives. Ventura County’s high living costs and limited affordable housing contribute to a growing population of youth who are homeless, system-involved, or at risk due to trauma, exploitation, or human trafficking.

The program manages the Youth Hotline, conducts regular street outreach routes, and provides a range of services that include assessment, harm reduction, crisis stabilization, case management, and aftercare, all designed to help youth move toward stable housing. Youth are connected to family reunification, emergency shelters, transitional housing, or specialized shelters for human trafficking and domestic violence survivors, depending on their needs.

The SOP utilizes a strength-based and trauma-informed protocol aimed at enhancing the social and emotional wellness of homeless youth. Staff are trained in evidence-based practices like Trauma-Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing, and Positive Youth Development. Youth are actively involved in their care plans, and both Spanish- and English-speaking youth receive support from experienced outreach specialists to identify their needs and goals. Recognizing that youth face varying levels of need, staff design personalized action plans that address both short-term and long-term goals. Some youth require brief support to resolve family issues, while others need intensive, long-term services to address challenges like mental health issues, substance use, past trauma, and life skills deficits. Each client’s plan is tailored to provide the most effective resources and support to ensure positive outcomes.

Interface’s 51 years of expertise and its established relationships with community organizations, law enforcement, and county agencies will help expand the program’s impact and better serve homeless youth in the county.

Project Title: Music immersion at Title I Public Schools
Project Description:

Each year, Cultural Caravan brings world-class musicians directly into Boulder County’s Title I public schools—institutions serving the most disadvantaged and culturally diverse student populations. Through four annual artist residency weeks, we provide interactive concerts featuring internationally renowned artists performing diverse musical traditions: classical, Latin jazz, Afropop, Hindustani, and more.

Many students are immigrants or children of immigrants. For most, these visits represent their only encounter with professional, high-level music from around the world. We design each experience to be welcoming and engaging—artists speak directly with students, demonstrate their instruments, share cultural stories, and invite participation. Spanish-speaking artists communicate with students in their first language. As one principal reported: "The students said it was the best concert they had ever seen. They literally danced out of school!"

These immersions matter profoundly. In Boulder County’s relatively homogenous environment, students need to see themselves represented and encounter cultures different from their own. Our programming centers voices from diverse communities, modeling the inclusion our region should strive for.

The experience extends beyond the school day. We’ve built communication infrastructure ensuring parents receive concert information and unlimited free tickets directly via text or email following school visits. Our MainStage venues are easily accessible by public transit, transforming a single school visit into an ongoing invitation for entire families to participate in Boulder’s cultural life.

Through these encounters, students develop active listening skills across musical traditions, cross-cultural understanding, and direct connection with professional artists. They gain confidence exploring unfamiliar traditions and discover new forms of expression.

Over five years, Cultural Caravan has presented 172 concerts while growing from $30,000 to nearly $400,000 in annual operations. These Title I visits represent our core commitment: ensuring Boulder County’s most underserved students and families access the transformative power of world-class music.

Project Title: Bringing Opportunity to the Field: Athletic Access for Underserved Youth
Project Description:

Empower Youth Fund seeks grant support to expand equitable access to organized sports for underserved youth athletes ages 7–18 who face significant financial and systemic barriers to participation. Rather than waiting for families to navigate complex systems on their own, Empower Youth Fund actively brings opportunity to young athletes, meeting them where they are and removing cost-based obstacles that too often limit potential.
Youth sports participation is increasingly out of reach for low-income families due to rising costs for registration fees, uniforms, equipment, training, and travel. These barriers disproportionately affect underserved communities, leaving talented and motivated youth without access to the physical, social, and developmental benefits of athletics.
Through this project, Empower Youth Fund will provide direct, needs-based athletic sponsorships that cover essential participation expenses across multiple sports. Athletes are identified through community outreach, partnerships with schools and local organizations, and referrals from coaches and families. Each sponsorship is informed by the athlete’s circumstances, ensuring support is responsive, respectful, and impactful.
Participation in organized sports is strongly linked to increased confidence, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and academic engagement, while also reducing isolation and risk-taking behaviors. By keeping youth engaged in safe, structured environments, this initiative supports both athletic development and long-term personal growth.
Grant funding will directly support athlete sponsorships, allowing Empower Youth Fund to serve more families, deepen community partnerships, and strengthen equitable pathways for young athletes to dream big, grow in confidence, and reach their full potential, on and off the field, regardless of financial circumstance.
