Project Title: The Agri -STEM outdoor Learning
Project Description:

Research shows that children from underserved communities in Georgia often face limited access to hands-on educational experiences that reinforce classroom learning and build confidence, problem-solving skills, and curiosity. Many students fall behind not because of lack of ability, but because they lack engaging, real-world learning opportunities that make education meaningful and accessible.

Our Agri-STEM Outdoor Learning Program is a one-year educational initiative designed to support academic growth for youth ages 5–19 through experiential, standards-aligned learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Activities will be delivered on the Smith Family Ranch Foundation’s 42-acre outdoor learning site, the program integrates classroom concepts with applied learning in agriculture, environmental science, and food systems.

Students participate in two 12-week cohorts, receiving instruction from trained educators and program facilitators. Weekly sessions include garden-based science labs, soil and plant biology lessons, hydroponics demonstrations, basic engineering challenges, data collection activities, and problem-solving exercises tied to real-world agricultural systems. The program empowers academic skills such as observation, measurement, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication core competencies linked to long-term educational success.

The project will serve 50 youth from low-income families who attend under-resourced schools and have limited access to enrichment programming. Outcomes will include increased STEM knowledge, improved engagement in learning, and strengthened confidence in academic abilities. Progress will be measured through attendance tracking, pre- and post-learning assessments, and instructor observations.

Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will support instructional materials, curriculum supplies, learning tools, and educator stipends, ensuring the program is delivered at no cost to participating families. With this support, underserved youth will gain the educational tools, exposure, and encouragement needed to succeed in school and reach their full potential.

Total Project Budget: $150,000
