Project Title: Pivotal Foster Youth Middle & High School Coaching Program
Project Description:

The Pivotal Middle & High School Coaching Program supports young people in and from foster care through the critical high school years to position them for their future success in school, employment, and life. Throughout the academic year, our full-time staff coaches provide trauma-responsive, individualized services to our scholars, helping them develop and implement a graduation plan, supporting them in career exploration, and looking ahead to post-secondary options. We provide consistency and structure for these young people who often move around from school to school or district to district. By encouraging a stronger commitment to academic and career goals, our coaches help students graduate high school and matriculate to post-secondary education.
At the start of the program year, coaches have youth assess themselves on their perceived fluency in four critical Success Skills identified by Pivotal as being essential to long-term academic and employment success. The skill categories were determined through research in best practices for positive youth development and social-emotional learning, predictors of academic success, and lead indicators of career readiness. The skills are Self-Awareness, Communication and Self-Advocacy Skills, Organization and Time Management Skills, and Accessing and Utilizing Resources. Coaches use these assessment results to have focused conversations with each student discussing the youths’ vision and goals for themselves, establishing strategies for success, and talking through potential barriers.
Our coaches meet regularly with the youth on their rosters to check in on academic and program goal progress, identify and address barriers to success, support the development of Success Skills, provide college exploration, application, and matriculation support including college tours, application support, financial aid and scholarship research and application support. Coaches collaborate with social workers, caregivers, treatment professionals, and others to ensure a unified vision in terms of academic needs. Coaches also connect youth to other resources and services as needed.

Total Project Budget: $961,817

Project Duration: Pivotal services are offered year-round, with no specific enrollment dates for participants. While we see a spike in referrals at the beginning of the school year, our doors are open to foster youth whenever they need us.
Geographical Area Served: Pivotal serves young people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties who were in foster care for at least one day after their 13th birthday and follows them wherever they may move to.

Project Title: Book Mark’d
Project Description:

Madison Reading Project is applying for funding to increase our supply of books given away in languages other than English. We’re seeing a significant increase in requests for books in Spanish, Hmong, Arabic, Swahili, and more.

We provide these diverse language books through our Book Mark’d literacy programs supporting elementary-aged children.

Book Mark’d focuses on children in kindergarten through eighth grade and is built around partnerships with schools and out-of-school time programs to support educators and their students with free books and literacy programs that ignite a love of reading.

Madison Reading Project works closely with local educators, community leaders and district administrators to determine where our services are most needed. Many of the schools we serve have children whose families recently immigrated to the United States and are learning English for the first time.

Children whose parents speak a language other than English are often relied on to facilitate communication for their parents and guardians. By providing books in their native language, we can reduce the emotional and mental load placed on children learning a new language and provide an avenue for children and their parents and guardians to enjoy reading together in their native language.

Book Mark’d focuses on youth residing in households experiencing financial insecurity, and whose age ranges from 5 to 14 years old. Books curated by our staff match the age and reading ability of the children to be served at each program location.

By meeting a child where they are in terms of language, reading ability, and interest, we make reading enjoyable, accessible, and fun – our book selections are full of some of the silliest stories and best illustrations that get kids excited to turn the page and read!

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/12/2025
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Tutoring and Mentorship for At-Risk Youth
Project Description:

The SCC’s mission is to offer a diverse array of services to senior adults, empowering them to leverage their life experiences to meet community needs. The SCC partners with area Title 1 schools to implement the Foster Grandparents Program, annually serving ~500 at-risk elementary students in Richmond and Jefferson counties, 81.1% of whom are minority and 90% of whom qualify as low-income. This program provides thousands of community education hours to students who attend these chronically-failing schools.

Senior adults serve alongside teachers in classrooms for 20/hrs per week during the academic year, providing 1:1 and small group academic remediation for vulnerable students. Foster Grandparents serve a vital role in students’ academic progress, more than 90% of whom read below grade level, and in their social-emotional growth through supportive and trusting relationships.

There is a critical need for the Foster Grandparents Program in our community due to the persistent challenges faced by low-income, at-risk students in Title 1 schools where teachers are often outnumbered by students 30:1. Grant funds will help us continue and expand this vital program by enabling all 45 Foster Grandparents to extend their service day from 4 to 5 hours. This means Hermanowski Family Foundation funding will cover an extra 2500 tutoring and mentoring hours for these students.

The program has a proven track record of making a lasting impact. In recent years, students participating in the program have shown significant gains in both math and reading, as reflected in their statewide standardized test scores. Beyond academic achievement, students report increased feelings of worthiness, competency, and motivation. In fact, 75% of students involved in the program demonstrate improved skills across these areas.

Ultimately, an investment from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will help create a more equitable educational experience for students who are struggling both academically and socially.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 03/17/2025
Requested Amount: $8,000

Project Title: Future Ready Kids
Project Description:

The mission of Gardere Community Christian School (GCCS) is to provide a firm Christian foundation in the educational and spiritual life of children in the Gardere neighborhood, encouraging them to grow into and become the person God created them to be. This mission is achieved through three pillars of success: academic excellence, spiritual and character development, and family/community involvement. The goal is to make a high quality, Christian education available to every child and family in the Gardere area, regardless of their financial circumstances. GCCS serves 162 low-income (99%) and minority (98%) students. On the 2024 state standardized (LEAP) tests, the percentage of students scoring Mastery+ in English and Math was more than six times that of neighboring schools serving the Gardere community.

GCCS offers one-to-one computers to its 2nd-5th grade students. The school’s current student computers are all five years+. Due to age and changing technology, the computers fail to adequately support the learning and testing software used in the tier-one curricula (Louisiana Department of Education) that the school employs. Some classrooms have newer shared, or demonstration, computers. Others do not. GCCS invites the Hermanowski Family Foundation to invest in the futures of the Gardere community’s children as the school purchases 95 student computers and four stronger classroom computers.

Integrating contemporary technology into the classroom is essential for low-income students, helping close the achievement gap and preparing them for a digital future. A study by the Education Trust found that low-income students are 40% less likely to use technology for interactive learning activities. Many families rely on smartphones as their sole means of connectivity, viewing technology as entertainment tools rather than educational/professional tools. Providing access to and training in computer technology for research and education is paramount. Upgrades are necessary to keep up with changing software technology.

Total Project Budget: $21,071

Other Funding

Geographical Area Served: GCCS serves the Greater Baton Rouge Area, but the vast majority of its students live within the one square mile of the impoverished Gardere neighborhood.

Project Title: The Victory Center Art Therapy Program
Project Description:

Thank you for the past grants given to The Victory Center by the Hermanowski Family Foundation. We have grown in successfully graduating students to mainstream education as well as demonstrated success in improving and transforming the lives of children and young adults by equipping students with the daily living skills needed. We are requesting your support for 2026 so that we may continue to provide the most innovative programs for students with autism and related disabilities. Our current offerings that integrate education, vocational training, and community-centered learning would be tremendously enhanced by continuing to build our art therapy program that was new this school year.
A $10,000 grant is needed to provide supplies, training and instruction for our Art Therapy Program for the students in the Primary and Secondary Program (Ages 5-22). Art therapy is a mental health intervention that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight. Funding would support the art supplies and instruction needed for this program.
We already see our students showing improvement from their experience in our Art Therapy Program with:
· Improved development of social skills like communication and teamwork
· Improved emotional expression
· Improved sensory regulation
· Improved fine motor skills
The community served by this program will be the 34 students enrolled in our Primary and Secondary Programs.
Thanks to generous donors like you, we will expand our scope to provide a multitude of opportunities for education and therapy by giving students the tools to succeed and to achieve their full potential.

Mountain Roots Outdoor Education is an initiative designed to provide 5th-grade students across 13 elementary schools in Henderson County with meaningful outdoor learning experiences that align with the new NC science standards and Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs). This program aims to promote academic achievement and foster emotional well-being, particularly for students facing social or emotional challenges. Project Title: Empowering Children Through Body Safety Education: Preventing Abuse Through Knowledge
Project Description:

Abuse prevention education, particularly Body Safety Education, empowers elementary-aged children by providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize, resist, and report abuse.

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Hamilton County offers Body Safety Education to over 6,000 children each year. Students in both public and private elementary schools learn to differentiate between safe and unsafe behaviors and touches, enabling them to identify inappropriate actions from adults or peers.

Through evidence-based programs, children develop confidence and practice communication skills while learning about personal boundaries, body safety, and their right to say "no" in uncomfortable situations.

Prevention education programs encourage children to speak up if something feels wrong and to seek help from trusted adults. Educated children are also less likely to be targeted by abusers, as they are more aware of common grooming tactics and manipulation techniques.

Early education and prevention information are crucial for keeping children safe. When children understand abuse and know how to report it, they are more likely to come forward sooner, allowing for quicker intervention and support.

By teaching children these essential skills, child abuse prevention education helps create a safer environment and reduces the chances of child abuse occurring.

Project Title: BPO High School Symphony Hall Pass
Project Description:

In a city as diverse as Buffalo, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra sees firsthand the wide range of experiences and backgrounds that shape our community. We also see how many young people feel that live symphonic music isn’t for them—not because they wouldn’t love it, but because they’ve never had the chance to feel like they belong. The High School Symphony Hall Pass is changing that.

For just $29, students get a season pass to nearly all BPO Classics, Pops, and Rock performances, along with backstage access, artist meet-and-greets, teen nights, volunteer opportunities, and a dedicated online hub for resources and special events. But beyond affordability, this program is about breaking down barriers—not just financial ones, but the invisible ones that tell young people “this isn’t your space.”

The earlier we reach students, the better. And what makes the Symphony Hall Pass unique is that it gives high schoolers the freedom to come on their own or with friends—no need to wait for a school field trip or a family outing. How cool is it that on a Saturday night, teens can hang out with their friends at Kleinhans Music Hall, immersed in a world-class cultural experience?
