Project Title: Mountain Roots Outdoor Education
Project Description:

Mountain Roots Outdoor Education is an initiative designed to provide 5th-grade students across 13 elementary schools in Henderson County with meaningful outdoor learning experiences that align with the new NC science standards and Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs). This program aims to promote academic achievement and foster emotional well-being, particularly for students facing social or emotional challenges. The program’s primary goal is to engage students in hands-on learning that deepens their understanding of science concepts while supporting their mental health through outdoor exploration.

The activities will include field trips to local parks, nature reserves, and other outdoor environments where students can explore ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental conservation. Through outdoor science experiments, students will directly apply their classroom learning in a real-world context, reinforcing the scientific principles they are studying. Additionally, team-building activities will foster collaboration, resilience, and communication skills, offering students opportunities to work together to solve problems in an outdoor setting. Nature journaling will allow students to reflect on their experiences, helping them connect their personal growth and mental health to their environmental learnings.

The anticipated outcomes of the program include increased engagement and improved academic performance in science, particularly through hands-on learning and real-world applications. The program is designed to have a positive impact on mental health, offering an outlet for stress and anxiety while encouraging emotional resilience and teamwork. By promoting collaboration and physical activity in nature, students will develop stronger social connections, creating a supportive learning community. Additionally, the program will instill an appreciation for environmental stewardship and sustainability.
