Project Title: Girl Scout Leadership Experience
Project Description:

Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital (GSCNC) is the largest, most diverse Girl Scout council in the nation with 76,889 members (45,194 K-12 youth and 31,695 adult volunteers) in Washington, DC and 25 surrounding Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia counties. Our mission is fully aligned with The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation and we are proudly committed to providing youth opportunities to build the courage, confidence, and character needed to make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) is the foundation of the Girl Scout experience, delivering a collection of engaging, challenging, and fun activities designed specifically for school-aged girls. Everything youth do in Girl Scouts is infused with the GSLE, which teaches Girl Scouts’ Keys to Leadership: discover, connect, and take action. These Keys help youth explore the world, inspire each other, and collectively make the world a better place. The GSLE also ties into our four pillars: Entrepreneurship, Outdoors, Life Skills, and STEM.

Girl Scouts Research Institute has conducted various studies, surveys, and evaluation reports. The 2021 Alum Difference study found that: 84% of Girl Scouts step into leadership roles, 88% are satisfied with their life overall, and 68% of adults who participated in Girl Scouting as youth members credit their success to Girl Scouts. Furthermore, 90% of all female U.S. astronauts, 80% of all female tech leaders, and 76% of female U.S. Senators were Girl Scouts. One hundred percent of female U.S. Secretaries of State were also Girl Scouts.

GSCNC youth programming and experiences play a vital role in developing leadership skills, giving youth access to a network of supportive friends and adults who help create new possibilities for their futures. Girl Scouts is committed to creating the next generation of leadership, and teaching youth that nothing is out of reach through experiential learning.

Today’s Date: 3/24/2025
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: General Operating Costs for 2026 Programming
Project Description:

VIA Academy’s 2026 program will be the seventh iteration of our program, bringing students to the New World Center’s campus located in Miami Beach, Fl at no-cost to the students or their families. Our high school-age students come from remote and underrepresented communities within classical music, and are offered instrumental skill training and mentorship on their future career decisions from professional teaching artists who are leaders in the field of classical music. In addition to this individual focus, VIA Academy broadens our student’s perspectives with a curriculum that explores the purpose of music in culture and community.

Founded in 2020 by two members of the New World Symphony, VIA Academy was a direct response to the need to adapt to the pandemic and the widespread need for access it created. This led to the creation of an inclusive and equitable music education program capable of adapting to the specific needs our students face. After the pandemic we evolved to include in-person programing, and with this principle of adaptability, we identified the need for our in-person program to not only address the needs of our individual students, but to also empower our students to add to the ecosystem of artistic opportunities in their own differing communities. This defining part of our curriculum is met in two ways; the first is guiding each of our students through designing their own actionable community projects, the second is through our collaboration to support a local institution through our program’s culminating performance.

VIA Academy’s curriculum not only fosters the growth of our students, but also guides them in continuing to use their talents to positively impact their communities. If awarded, these funds would directly support general operating expenses associated with bringing this curriculum to the students we serve at no-cost to them or their families.

Project Title: Compass Arts Pathway: Navigating Creativity Through Art and Music
Project Description:

Compass Arts Pathway is a specialized initiative at Compass Collegiate Academy designed to weave a rich tapestry of art and music into the fabric of our students’ daily learning experiences. This program emphasizes the integration of diverse artistic disciplines and musical instruction into our curriculum, enabling every student to discover and cultivate their creative abilities.

Incorporating both traditional and modern artistic endeavors, Compass Arts Pathway will provide access to painting, digital arts, sculpture, various music genres, and instrumental practice. These components are crucial for stimulating student creativity, enhancing emotional and intellectual growth, and promoting cultural literacy.

Support from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will be pivotal in acquiring necessary materials such as art supplies, modern musical instruments, and multimedia resources. It will also fund workshops led by experts to ensure our educators are at the forefront of arts education. This initiative aims to make arts accessible to all students, particularly supporting the 80% eligible for free or reduced lunch, by providing them with the resources to explore and excel in the arts without financial burdens.

The Compass Arts Pathway project aligns perfectly with the foundation’s mission to transform young lives through comprehensive developmental opportunities. By fostering an environment where creativity through art and music is not just encouraged but integrated into everyday learning, we equip our students with the tools to navigate their educational and personal journeys successfully. This project will instill in them the confidence to express themselves and the skills to engage actively and empathetically in their communities.

Today’s Date: March 24, 2025
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Boys Town South Florida Continuum of Care Services
Project Description:

Boys Town South Florida respectfully requests support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation to support prevention services for struggling children and families in South Florida through our Continuum of Care services. Annually, our programs serve more than 3,000 members of our community through Care Coordination Services, In-Home Family Services, Common Sense Parenting, Lift with Boys Town, and the Behavioral Health Clinic.

Based on the research-proven Boys Town Model, our services provide resources and guidance that help individuals attain stability, enhance strengths, and work toward independently addressing needs. By equipping families with knowledge, skills, and supports, we prevent youth truancy, delinquency, substance abuse, mental health issues, and family separation.

Research shows that trauma-informed services, like our programs, can alleviate the negative effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and improve long-term outcomes. We measure our program impact in four key areas:

1) Well-Being: Youth is in school or has graduated; has not been in trouble with the law; is drug-free; has basic needs met; youth and/or family know how to find support, services, and resources; and have positive family relationships.

2) Permanency: Youth is living with family and is placement-free (has not been referred to another out-of-home placement).

3) Safety: Youth is abuse-free.

4) Satisfaction: Boys Town has had a positive impact in their life.

To assess program effectiveness, staff compare key indicators of well-being from clients’ pre- and post-assessments, identifying growth, progress, and need for additional interventions. Evidence suggests that through our approach, children and families truly become safer, healthier and happier. 90% of families report satisfaction with services, meaning they received the help they need and their lives improved through our programs.

With the Foundation’s support, these services will continue to meet our shared goal of promoting the success and full potential of each child or family we serve.

Total Project Budget: 7,883,525

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): 57% of Boys Town South Florida’s budget is anticipated to be secured through program service revenue; 30% from the general operating efforts of our national parent Boys Town organization (AKA Father Flanagan’s Boys Home); 8% is budgeted from private contributions; and approximately 5% from net patient revenue. Project Title: AYS Pathways to Success: Middle School Program
Project Description:

The demand for afterschool programs is great—according to a recent study conducted by the Afterschool Alliance, 8.4 million children are currently enrolled in afterschool programs, but the parents of more than 18 million children would enroll them in a program if one were available to them. Despite the existing evidence that afterschool programs can positively influence the children and support working families in their communities who are struggling in the current economic climate, there are more than 15 million children who have no adult supervision when the school day ends – including middle school students who, despite the inclination that they do not need “babysitters,” need positive influences in their lives outside of the school day.
The AYS Pathways to Success project seeks to grow and enhance AYS’s current middle school basic childcare offerings by creating a supportive environment that fosters interpersonal connectivity, academic success, leadership skills, and positive relationships with peers and staff. The initiative will provide specific middle school age training for staff, establish community partnerships, as well as provide academic incentives to motivate students, leadership-building opportunities to empower them, and life skills training to prepare them for future success. By emphasizing personal growth, teamwork and mentorship, the program will nurture strong connections among students and staff, promoting a sense of community. This holistic approach ensures students are equipped with the tools they need to thrive academically, socially and in life. This program will provide parents/guardians with peace of mind by offering a safe, structured and enriching afterschool environment for their children.

Project Title: School-Based Health Centers
Project Description:

Rockbridge Area Health Center’s School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) at Rockbridge County High School and Maury River Middle School address critical gaps in student health services in our rural community. Since launching in August 2024, our centers have served 376 students through 909 visits, delivering primary medical care and behavioral health support directly where students learn.

In rural Rockbridge County, transportation barriers often prevent students from accessing essential healthcare. Our SBHCs eliminate these barriers by bringing comprehensive care directly to schools, reducing absenteeism and keeping students in class while receiving the care they need. This innovative approach addresses social determinants of health by ensuring all students have equitable access to healthcare regardless of their family’s transportation resources or work constraints.

School administrators have specifically requested increased behavioral health professional support to address previously unmet student needs. Our integrated behavioral health services provide critical early intervention for students struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges that, if left untreated, can significantly impact academic performance and future success. Depression screenings conducted during primary care visits help identify students who might otherwise suffer silently without appropriate support.

The SBHCs address the primary health needs identified in our Community Health Needs Assessment: chronic disease management, mental health support, and injury/violence prevention. By treating conditions like asthma, diabetes, and ADHD in school, we promote long-term health habits that transfer to home life and well into adulthood.

While we currently operate in two schools, our strategic vision includes expanding to additional schools throughout the Rockbridge area over time. This expansion will allow us to reach more students in our rural community, creating equitable access to healthcare services. By addressing health barriers to education now, we’re creating pathways for improved graduation rates and post-secondary success, preparing students with the physical and mental well-being necessary for lifelong achievement in an increasing number of schools across our region.
