Project Title: Bringing Joy & Support to Children Facing Critical Illnesses in El Paso
Project Description:

The Fulfilling Dreams Program seeks to provide transformative experiences for children aged 5-16 in El Paso, Texas, who are battling life-threatening or chronic illnesses. By creating personalized, unforgettable experiences, we aim to give children a respite from their medical challenges and offer emotional healing. The program focuses on fulfilling the dreams of 10 children, allowing them to travel or engage in activities that bring joy and hope, enabling them to temporarily escape their daily routines and create lasting memories.

This initiative not only provides emotional support but also eases some of the financial and emotional burdens that families face during such difficult times. Many of the children we serve come from underprivileged backgrounds, where access to resources and opportunities is limited. The program’s goal is to uplift these children and their families, offering them moments of joy and togetherness.

Funds will be used to cover logistics, including travel expenses, event costs, and volunteer training. The program will bring together volunteers, donors, and local businesses to make these dreams a reality, fostering community involvement and creating a lasting impact. Through this program, we aim to foster resilience, empower children to face their health struggles with renewed hope, and provide families with the support they need to navigate these challenging circumstances.

Project Title: Equine-Assisted Therapy for Youth
Project Description:

Equine-Assisted Therapy, Inc. (EAT) provides therapeutic horsemanship experiences to persons with mental, physical, and psychological challenges in order to enhance the quality and productivity of their lives.

Our clients include children and youth with cerebral palsy, anxiety disorders, ADHD, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, and Down syndrome, as well as trauma victims, amputees, cancer patients, children in the foster care system, and individuals on the autism spectrum. We serve approximately 130 children and youth each week at our main facility in Wildwood and our satellite facility in Town and Country.

EAT uses horses and Certified Equine Therapy Instructors to facilitate physical and mental well-being for our clients. Our techniques complement traditional therapy to provide physical, cognitive, and psychological benefits to our riders.

Physical benefits include improved core muscle strength, balance, posture, muscle tone, and flexibility. Children with Down syndrome especially see increased lung capacity and oxygen flow, as well as improvements in fine and gross motor skills. Riding also increases endorphin and serotonin levels in the brain, improving riders’ overall mood and wellbeing.

Cognitive outcomes are improvements in hand-eye coordination, body awareness, spatial relationships, sensory integration, and decision making.

Psychological advancements are seen in self-esteem, independence, social skills, team skills, and empowered relationships.

We have witnessed previously non-communicative children speak their first words, and we have helped previously immobile youth take their first steps and gain new independence. We are changing lives one hoofprint at a time.

Thank you for your consideration.

Project Title: Fueling Hope and Enabling Dreams to Take Flight: Waltham Family School Pre- School and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Educational Programs
Project Description:

The Waltham Family School delivers a culturally and linguistically sensitive curriculum that is responsive to enrolled families’ needs and centered on whole-of-person well-being. Pre-school for 3-5 year-olds, English language classes, interactive and evidence-based literacy-building skills, and wraparound social-emotional supports are the cornerstones of this model. Enrolled families participate for four days and 12 hours each week during the school year. English language classes emphasize speaking, reading, writing, parenting resources, and essential computer and workforce readiness skill-building. The School’s English language education programming has resulted in jobs, promotions, and additional education, all of which contribute to greater family stability. Pre-schooling focuses on early childhood development and providing children with safe, supportive, and stimulating environments. Parents benefit from workshops on navigating public school systems, accessing human services, and safeguarding physical and mental well-being.
The School’s work is grounded in its recognition of the rich cultural assets and resilience that immigrant families bring to Waltham. Programs are designed to honor these strengths and provide tailored supports that build on individual participants’ abilities and aspirations. The School aims not only to address immigrant families’ immediate needs, but also to build long-term pathways to success that benefit the broader community. Each year, the School enrolls approximately 40 families, with demand consistently exceeding enrollment capacity. The School maintains a growing waitlist of approximately 15 families.
The School moved into a larger space this past summer, and the staff and Board of Directors have ambitious dreams for the School’s growth. School leadership is actively exploring innovative community partnership models with other local nonprofits and government agencies that aim to expand wraparound services to address the unique challenges faced by enrolled immigrant families. These services include enhanced social-emotional supports, creative and culturally relevant pedagogies featuring guest educators, and increased access to formal education- and career-relevant technology and training.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3-25-2025
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Equine Assisted Therapy (TASC)
Project Description:

The Equine Assisted Therapy Program provides psychotherapeutic services for children and youth ages 5-21 in Eliada’s other programs and in our community. An estimated 45% of Buncombe County residents have 1-2 risk factors associated with mental illness, and mental health was among the top three Buncombe County Health Assessment priorities. According to the NC Psychiatric Crisis Line, 21% (5,657) of Medicaid-enrolled youth in Buncombe County have a psychiatric disorder. Further, Buncombe County has only 10 child psychiatrists. Given the lack of providers and high levels of risk and diagnoses, additional services and modalities are needed.
The Equine Therapy Program addresses the physical, social, and emotional needs of each child and youth served by guiding participants on a journey of self-exploration and healing. We focus on client-centered and trauma-informed approaches specifically designed to enhance resilience, utilizing the EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) model and believing participants can discover the best solutions for themselves when given the opportunity. Therapy goals combined with experiences with the horses allow participants to explore themselves, overcome challenges, and discover hidden strengths, thus giving children the support needed to develop strategies for overcoming stress and trauma.
Staff are trained to address all treatment needs presented by participants, including stress, anxiety, depression, autism, and ADHD. We work with youths who have difficulties connecting with themselves and others to reform those skills and establish new, positive, and long-term habits by harnessing the bond between animals and people. There is no “right way” to have a session; each one is different for every person. The horses’ interactions with each other, participants, and the environment become a symbolic reflection of the child’s needs. If they are looking for a different response from a horse, they will have to try something different, making a genuine transformation within themselves.

Project Title: Academic Enrichment
Project Description:

Boys & Girls Club of Wooster (BGCW) seeks support from the Hermanowski Foundation to expand its education strategy and strengthen academic enrichment for youth ages 5–18, particularly those from low-income families. Rooted in the evidence-based Project Learn model, this initiative will focus on increasing access to STEM programming, building staff and volunteer capacity, and enhancing program evaluation to improve educational outcomes.

While BGCW already offers foundational supports like Power Hour and arts enrichment, a recent self-assessment identified specific areas for growth. These include offering STEM programming more consistently, formalizing staff development in instructional best practices, and increasing engagement with families and school partners. To address these needs, BGCW will implement a three-pronged approach:

Youth Capacity: Deliver weekly STEM programs using high-yield, hands-on activities that promote critical thinking, curiosity, and confidence in academic learning.

Staff & Volunteer Capacity: Train education staff and volunteers in effective facilitation strategies and implement peer observation with targeted coaching.

Club Capacity: Strengthen evaluation tools to track impact, host quarterly family engagement events, and enhance partnerships with local schools to align on learning goals.

By investing in this program, the Hermanowski Foundation will help increase academic engagement among youth, prepare them for school success, and ensure more young people are on track to graduate with a plan for the future. Over the next year, BGCW anticipates a 25% increase in STEM participation, improved staff instructional quality, and stronger feedback systems to guide continuous improvement. This targeted expansion builds on BGCW’s strong foundation and aligns directly with the Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to educational opportunity for youth.

Project Title: Sexual Violence Prevention Programs at the Elizabeth Smart Foundation
Project Description:

At the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, we work alongside Elizabeth Smart, an advocate whose story of survival after abduction and assault has inspired a national movement to shift societal perceptions around sexual violence. Through her courage, our foundation has grown into a platform that drives crucial conversations and provides resources for survivors. We focus on three main pillars:
• Survivor Advocacy: Empowering survivors through financial resources and giving survivors a platform to share their story.
• Prevention Education: Working with schools, communities, businesses, and organizations to teach strategies for preventing sexual violence.
• Shifting Societal Perceptions: Leading national and local conversations to change society’s understanding and response to sexual violence.
The Elizabeth Smart Foundation is committed to empowering individuals, supporting survivors, and preventing sexual violence through four key programs. Smart Defense is a holistic self-defense training program that not only equips participants with martial arts techniques from Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Muay Thai but also educates them on consent, boundaries, and bystander intervention. Women and girls leave with confidence and self-protection skills, while men gain a deeper understanding of healthy masculinity and active allyship. Smart Talks, a podcast co-hosted by Elizabeth Smart and Heather Stockdale, fosters crucial conversations driving awareness and cultural shifts toward respect, consent, and accountability. We Believe You, a project to elevate survivor voices, provides a platform for survivors to reclaim their voices through personal essays, poems, and narratives, fostering societal understanding and connection while breaking the silence surrounding abuse. Lastly, the Survivor Support Fund offers financial assistance to survivors, covering essential needs such as rent, legal fees, education, and healthcare, ensuring they have the resources necessary for healing and rebuilding their lives.
