Project Title: Equine-Assisted Therapy for Youth
Project Description:

Equine-Assisted Therapy, Inc. (EAT) provides therapeutic horsemanship experiences to persons with mental, physical, and psychological challenges in order to enhance the quality and productivity of their lives.

Our clients include children and youth with cerebral palsy, anxiety disorders, ADHD, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, and Down syndrome, as well as trauma victims, amputees, cancer patients, children in the foster care system, and individuals on the autism spectrum. We serve approximately 130 children and youth each week at our main facility in Wildwood and our satellite facility in Town and Country.

EAT uses horses and Certified Equine Therapy Instructors to facilitate physical and mental well-being for our clients. Our techniques complement traditional therapy to provide physical, cognitive, and psychological benefits to our riders.

Physical benefits include improved core muscle strength, balance, posture, muscle tone, and flexibility. Children with Down syndrome especially see increased lung capacity and oxygen flow, as well as improvements in fine and gross motor skills. Riding also increases endorphin and serotonin levels in the brain, improving riders’ overall mood and wellbeing.

Cognitive outcomes are improvements in hand-eye coordination, body awareness, spatial relationships, sensory integration, and decision making.

Psychological advancements are seen in self-esteem, independence, social skills, team skills, and empowered relationships.

We have witnessed previously non-communicative children speak their first words, and we have helped previously immobile youth take their first steps and gain new independence. We are changing lives one hoofprint at a time.

Thank you for your consideration.
