Project Title: Sexual Violence Prevention Programs at the Elizabeth Smart Foundation
Project Description:
At the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, we work alongside Elizabeth Smart, an advocate whose story of survival after abduction and assault has inspired a national movement to shift societal perceptions around sexual violence. Through her courage, our foundation has grown into a platform that drives crucial conversations and provides resources for survivors. We focus on three main pillars:
• Survivor Advocacy: Empowering survivors through financial resources and giving survivors a platform to share their story.
• Prevention Education: Working with schools, communities, businesses, and organizations to teach strategies for preventing sexual violence.
• Shifting Societal Perceptions: Leading national and local conversations to change society’s understanding and response to sexual violence.
The Elizabeth Smart Foundation is committed to empowering individuals, supporting survivors, and preventing sexual violence through four key programs. Smart Defense is a holistic self-defense training program that not only equips participants with martial arts techniques from Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Muay Thai but also educates them on consent, boundaries, and bystander intervention. Women and girls leave with confidence and self-protection skills, while men gain a deeper understanding of healthy masculinity and active allyship. Smart Talks, a podcast co-hosted by Elizabeth Smart and Heather Stockdale, fosters crucial conversations driving awareness and cultural shifts toward respect, consent, and accountability. We Believe You, a project to elevate survivor voices, provides a platform for survivors to reclaim their voices through personal essays, poems, and narratives, fostering societal understanding and connection while breaking the silence surrounding abuse. Lastly, the Survivor Support Fund offers financial assistance to survivors, covering essential needs such as rent, legal fees, education, and healthcare, ensuring they have the resources necessary for healing and rebuilding their lives. This grant request is to support our programs, that align with our mission to empower, educate, and advocate for a world free from sexual violence.
