Project Title: Artist-in-Residence Program and Scholarship Expansion
Project Description:

Artworks is an arts and humanities organization focused on vitalizing the community of Big Rapids, MI. One of our programs is an artist-in-residence that annually supports an artist enrolled in an accredited college. This program provides space, support, and resources over 8-10 weeks culminating in a curated art exhibition of the artist’s work. With support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we will accelerate our refinement and expansion of this program, increasing our ability to serve your mission of improving and transforming the lives of children and young adults. Big Rapids is a rural and comparatively poor region of Michigan, reducing the opportunities for young people to meaningfully engage with the art and culture industry. Our expanded program will help elevate this industry for more young people in our area. Additionally, our artist-in-residence program cultivates general leadership, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. We will connect our expanded program to our annual Art Attack exhibition, a 35-year collaboration with local school districts that exhibits the work of K-12 students. A jury will access middle schooler submissions to the exhibition and select children for an invited art camp focused on improving their art skills and transforming their relationship to the arts. A high school senior or exceptional junior will benefit from our expansion via an application-based opportunity to assist the Artworks artist-in-residence and receive mentorship on college applications and portfolio creation. This student will also receive a college scholarship. Finally, our current artist-in-residence program will be enhanced by an increased stipend and supply budget reflecting our rising expectations. In addition to creating, the artists-in-residence will get opportunities to improve their interpersonal and communication skills through participation in Artworks events and programs. In whole, our expanded program gives young people great experiences and tools to help them succeed and achieve their full potential.

Project Title: Life Changing Experiences for the Most Vulnerable Children: Camp Morty Operational Support
Project Description:

Since 2006, the Westchester Parks Foundation’s (WPF) Camp Morty has provided a traditional residential summer camp experience annually for up to 660 children aged 8-17 in Westchester County, New York, who are receiving services from the Department of Social Services (WCDSS). In 2024, over 180 campers received child welfare services, including foster care, child protective services, and homeless shelter support, while more than 400 campers received family investment support such as food assistance, childcare subsidies, and safety net assistance. Many of these campers have experienced trauma such as exposure to violence, abuse, mental health challenges, or substance use disorders.
Camp Morty offers three distinct programs designed to provide age-appropriate experiences and support campers as they grow:
– Junior Camp (Ages 8-12): A one-week residential program designed to engage young campers in fun activities that foster creativity, teamwork, and confidence
– Merriwood Teen Empowerment Program (Ages 13-15): A two-week residential experience focused on leadership development, personal growth, and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards
– Counselors-in-Training (Ages 16-17): A three-week leadership program for former Camp Morty campers looking to take the next step in their camp journey as counselors
Camp Morty provides a variety of activities designed to promote growth, skills-building, and personal development. Campers participate in traditional summer camp activities, including swimming, arts & crafts, sports, STEAM, ropes challenge course, performing arts, and more. We also offer behavior and stress management workshops, boundary setting lessons, and communication skills. The program creates lifelong connections, builds community, and demonstrates trust. It provides a space for children separated by the foster system to re-connect with their siblings as well as provides an important break for caregivers/guardians so they can be their best version upon the child’s return from camp.

Children in the catchment area WYN serves have been impacted deeply by Hurricane Helene. Some lost homes and possessions and some lost loved ones. We are working to give them outdoor recreational experiences to broaden their horizons and help provide them with resilience and coping skills they need. If granted, your funds would allow us to take children on unique trips during afterschool hours, and on their spring and summer breaks from school. These adventures include beach trips, caving, hiking and rafting trips, high ropes courses and much more to help them feel challenged by, but also safe in, the outdoors. Project Title: Leader Development Initiative at Stetson University
Project Description:

Project Overview:

Young Life West Volusia is a faith-based mentorship organization that builds relationships with middle school, high school, college, foster care, and special needs students, providing community, spiritual guidance, and leadership development. Our Leader Development Initiative at Stetson University aims to recruit, train, and equip 15-20 new Young Life leaders who will mentor and support students across West Volusia.

Statement of Need:

Currently, 33 leaders serve Young Life West Volusia, reaching 825 students, with 156 attending weekly clubs. Each leader typically connects with 25 students, meaning that adding 10 more leaders would expand our reach by 250 students. As DeLand High School—the largest in Volusia County—continues to grow, the need for more trained mentors is critical.

Use of Funds:

Grant funding will support:
Leader Recruitment & Outreach – Engaging Stetson students to serve as Young Life leaders.
Training & Development – Providing mentorship, discipleship resources, and hands-on leadership training.
Leadership Retreats – Offering focused retreats for spiritual growth, team-building, and skill development.

Expected Impact:
This initiative will increase Young Life’s reach in local schools, providing mentorship and faith-based guidance to more students. Trained leaders will positively impact the next generation by fostering community, faith, and leadership.

We appreciate the Hermanowski Foundation’s consideration in supporting this initiative and look forward to the opportunity to invest in the lives of young leaders.

Project Title: Enterprise for Youth Paid Summer Internships
Project Description:

Enterprise for Youth seeks support to sponsor six (6) paid summer internships for high school students through our comprehensive internship programs. Our internships provide under-resourced youth with hands-on work experience across diverse sectors, including healthcare, technology, arts and design, financial & legal services, and public service.

Interns work alongside professionals on meaningful projects, gaining valuable workplace experience and exploring potential career paths. They develop critical skills in teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving, laying a strong foundation for future success.

All interns participate in our Job Readiness Training (JRT), a curriculum designed to equip youth with essential workplace competencies. Training topics include professional communication, time management, résumé writing, and interview techniques. This ensures participants are well-prepared to excel in any professional environment.

At the conclusion of the summer, interns showcase their experiences at our Career Expo. This event provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their growth, present their learnings, and network with industry professionals, and community members. It is a celebration of their achievements and a step forward in their career development.

By sponsoring six internships, your support will directly empower the next generation of leaders. You will provide access to career exploration opportunities, foster confidence and professional growth, and help youth build the skills needed for long-term success.

Our total project budget included our internship wages & expenses of $500,000.
This amount offers paid wages to 300 interns at a cost of $450,000 or $1500 per intern ($20/hr. x 75 hours); Job Readiness Training at a cost of $37,500 or $125 per intern; and food & transportation for our youth at $12,500.

Project Title: Child Health Education and Supports
Project Description:

Child Health Partnership (Child Health) provides at-home support to children and parents to promote the health and well-being of families in our community. Our three primary program goals are:

1. promoting child and family health through health assessments, education and improved access to care;
2. encouraging positive parent-child interactions and child development through education and hands-on activities that build parent confidence and abilities, leading to school readiness;
3. supporting family self-sufficiency through employment and connections to community resources.

Child Health staff establish long-term, trusted relationships with families with babies and children age 0-6. Our teams of community health nurses and family support specialists provide comprehensive family supports that include health education, screenings and improved access to health, mental health and dental care. Child Health nurses teach the value of prenatal care and self-care during pregnancy, to promote healthy full-term babies. Staff encourage parent knowledge of how to use a medical home for their child, and how to navigate health and social service systems. We improve access to services, helping parents to problem-solve and advocate for their families.

Child Health staff meet with families in their homes at least monthly, to build knowledge, skills and resilience. We work with families in both rural areas and vulnerable urban communities, including many refugees and immigrants.

After one year of services in the program (2024 data), families show:
• 97% of children have an established medical home
• 92% of children are current on developmental screenings
• 89% of children are current on well child visits
• an 80% decrease in children who needed medical care and didn’t receive it.

We anticipate serving 350 children from 220 families in the coming year.

Project Title: First Explorers
Project Description:

First Explorers is an outreach of Sylva First Baptist Church, which is under the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship umbrella. First Explorers was created after staff realized there were very few, organized, safe spaces for school-aged children (K-8th grade) in our community to go following the end of school when their parents remain at work. First Explorers is offered 5 days a week from around 3:00-5:30 PM, with transportation to our location available via normal bus routes or direct pickup using our church buses.
After school begins with a snack and time for socialization between the children and our staff. Following snack time, children engage in enrichment and supervised free play while staff prepare for the daily lesson. Each day of the week has its own unique theme. For example, Music Mondays introduce children to various musical instruments with volunteer performers who demonstrate and help guide students on their musical journeys, and Tasty Tuesdays focuses on nutrition, easy recipes, kitchen safety, and making use of various ingredients. Children play outside each day of the week for at least 30 minutes, with Fridays fully dedicated to outdoor activities.
A key element to emphasize is our prioritization of open discussions. Rather than giving children an answer or expecting them to just accept new information, we encourage them to discuss their thoughts and perspectives. Oftentimes, we can learn as much from them as they can from us. A discussion-based format helps students feel more engaged, valued, respected, and listened to, increasing receptiveness. Further, they are able to learn how to respectfully voice their opinions and disagree while still finding ways to get along. The funds requested will support enrollment in our program for 8 children whose families cannot afford our standard tuition.
