Project Title: National CASA & Child Advocacy Support Program
Project Description:

In 2021, 588,221 children in the United States were victims of child abuse and neglect.

KARA (Kids At Risk Action), with the help of Google Ad Grants experts, provides up to $120,000 per year in free advertising to CASA programs and child advocacy nonprofits across the country. This includes support for CASA for Lancaster County (Court Appointed Special Advocates), where dedicated staff often have limited time or resources for strategic communications.

To help bridge that gap, KARA offers a powerful database of over 11,000 subject matter reports, videos, blogs, and 40 new TikTok videos, as well as our Invisible Children AI-powered podcast featuring 17 interviews with child welfare experts. These tools strengthen our partners’ outreach, raise awareness, and drive community action.

We believe knowledge drives change. Our goal is to significantly increase awareness throughout Lancaster County and the U.S. about the realities of child abuse—through statistics, real-life stories, and the urgent need for intervention. Communities must understand the long-term consequences for abused children, including suicide, mental health struggles, homelessness, and involvement in the justice system.

Our initiative aims to build deeper community support for CASA for Lancaster County and vulnerable children by inspiring people to take action—as volunteers, foster parents, or financial supporters.

Our 12-month pilot with CASA Minnesota generated 40,000 website visits and 200,000 user interactions. This kind of growth fuels stronger nonprofits and ensures at-risk children receive the care, healing, and stability they need to thrive.

Through our Google Ad Grants Support Program, we aim to fully leverage CASA for Lancaster County’s $10,000/month in free Google advertising through directed messages and search engine optimization.

Our objectives include:

• Quadrupling website traffic
• Expanding social media reach
• Growing email subscriber lists

We track success through Google Analytics, focusing on increases in engagement, awareness, and volunteer/supporter involvement.

Total Project Budget: $155,600

With the support of the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we seek funding to expand our youth programming—offering accessible, culturally responsive surf therapy to youth ages 12–21 in San Diego, California.

This program addresses the urgent mental health needs of young people who have experienced trauma, grief, or marginalization. Our surf therapy model combines mental health support, community connection, and somatic healing through the ocean. Each session is co-facilitated by licensed clinicians, trauma-informed surf instructors, and trained peer mentors.

Participants learn surfing, mindfulness, and emotional regulation techniques in a supportive, identity-affirming space. Through the power of the ocean and community, youth build self-confidence, foster resilience, and find belonging.

Funds will support youth scholarships, equipment, transportation, healthy snacks, and program facilitation costs—ensuring no participant is turned away due to financial hardship. This program has a proven track record of reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and isolation in young people, while nurturing connection to self, others, and nature.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 03/27/2025
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Youth Fitness, Nutrition, and Empowerment Program
Project Description:

In 2022, The Haven of Grace – a unique and multifaceted maternity shelter, transitional housing, and long-term care program in St. Louis, MO – began an intentional shift in services to more fully recognize the effects of generational trauma and started prioritizing the mental health of not only the mothers we serve, but their children as well. We understand the children on our campus need dedicated emotional and developmental care due to their living circumstances during their formative years. Centering healing and empowering work into our practice helps to address the trauma often at the root of homelessness and to forge a path toward housing stability that breaks generational cycles. As a response, our clinical program team introduced a variety of initiatives specific to supporting mental health for infants and children of all ages.

We partner with The Green Beret Youth Initiative, which works with youth ages 8-14 years to develop character, commitment, and discipline. The program focuses on physical fitness, nutrition, and mentoring to teach problem-solving, decision-making, and assertiveness, which will lead to behaviors that positively influence the attitudes and norms of the community. Active and retired US Green Berets coach the children and support the development of individual strengths as well as building self-esteem. Group sessions held one Saturday a month help children develop communication skills, accomplish individual goals, and provide guidance on planning education and career goals. We are excited to see this popular program engaging children whose families no longer live on our campus but continue to participate with our offerings beyond the emergency housing crisis they experienced.

We plan to expand this effort to include younger children by engaging early childhood education and mental health professionals in developing and designing age-appropriate organized play, fitness and motor skills development, confidence building, independence, and nurturing a sense of belonging.

Total Project Budget: $30,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Unrestricted Individual Gifts: We will continue raising unrestricted dollars to support all our programming. We are currently identifying private funding opportunities that support the goals of this program.

Requested Amount: $9,420

Project Title: Pet Therapy for Children and Youth
Project Description:

Imagine the joy of a wagging tail and the comfort of a paw on your lap after a tough day. A therapy dog can be a lifeline—offering companionship and a sense of peace, hope, and healing. We believe every child deserves the unconditional love and support these special animals provide, and we would love your help to continue to make that possible.

Pet therapy sessions will be provided to children and youth at places such as Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, SOS Children’s Village, Quantum House, Family First Adolescent Services, Riverglades Elementary School, Children’s Bereavement Center, Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Boys and Girls Club, Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital and many others! In addition, therapy dogs will also remain on call to be deployed after local traumatic incidents through our Mental Health and Trauma Response program.

The cost to maintain one pet therapy team (handler + dog) in the field for one year is approximately $3,140. Each therapy dog can help between 500 – 700 individuals a year. Funding support from your Foundation of $9,420 would sustain the operation of 3 therapy dogs for one year and directly impact over 1,500 individuals.

The Foundation will receive the names and photos of your 3 dogs, updates on visits, stories of impact, and how many individuals they helped and where.

Helping pediatric patients through chemotherapy or procedures will provide comfort, cheer, and a welcome distraction. Dogs will also work in schools to help struggling readers, one-on-one or in small groups.
By actively engaging with the dogs, children learn the intrinsic value dogs bring to humans and the importance of empathy, respect, and responsibility. This initiative has the potential to create lasting positive impacts on students, animals and the community!

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/27/2025
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Pioneer Scholars
Project Description:

The Emily K Center was born out of a desire to address the needs of Durham’s lower-income, first generation students with the desire to complete a degree, but who encounter systemic barriers to achieving that goal. The majority of students enrolled in Durham Public Schools qualify for free or reduced lunch, and close to 75% of the district’s students are from ethnic minority groups that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education (African American, 37.2% and Latinx, 35.1%).

Pioneer Scholars is a free program supporting underserved elementary and middle school students. The program aims to prepare students to thrive in a college preparatory high school environment with the academic, socioemotional, and leadership skills required to identify, advocate for, and achieve their goals. The program helps lay the foundation for future success. Students meet in small groups after school with our educators to build strong academic skills. Educators use assessments and benchmarking to tailor lessons to areas of greatest need. Students participate in project-based, hands-on learning and are provided snacks when they come to the Center for programming.

Other program components include college and career exploration; cultural, arts, and social enrichment; socioemotional learning; physical recreation; and summer enrichment. In addition, character and leadership building are embedded into programming. The program teaches core character development pillars: high expectations, integrity, honesty, respect, heart, and hard work.

At the Center, we believe in the power of education in contributing to economic and social mobility in communities. Programs help address educational disparities and break cycles of poverty for students and their families. The long-term goal of Pioneer Scholars is for students to be holistically healthy and equipped to pursue their personal, educational, and career goals, positioning them for economic mobility and leadership in their communities.

Total Project Budget: 560,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We’ve applied for funding as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, and that decision is pending. We also have a pending grant that would include about $33K in support to PS.

Project Title: Side-by-Side Music Mentorship Program
Project Description:

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra (OPO) Side-by-Side Music Mentorship Program provides underserved middle and high school students with access to professional music instruction, mentorship, and performance opportunities. Designed to eliminate financial barriers to music education, this initiative pairs OPO professional musicians with students from Title I schools, offering four structured group lessons per year. The program culminates in a public performance where students and professional musicians play together, fostering both technical skills and artistic expression.

Since 2017, the program has served over 250 students annually from Howard Middle School and Edgewater High School. The OPO would like to expand into Jones High School and add Oak Ridge High School and its feeder middle school, Westridge, to strengthen the pipeline of student musicians. Beyond technical instruction, the program nurtures confidence, discipline, and perseverance, qualities that extend beyond music and into students’ academic and personal lives.
