Project Title: Youth Fitness, Nutrition, and Empowerment Program
Project Description:
In 2022, The Haven of Grace – a unique and multifaceted maternity shelter, transitional housing, and long-term care program in St. Louis, MO – began an intentional shift in services to more fully recognize the effects of generational trauma and started prioritizing the mental health of not only the mothers we serve, but their children as well. We understand the children on our campus need dedicated emotional and developmental care due to their living circumstances during their formative years. Centering healing and empowering work into our practice helps to address the trauma often at the root of homelessness and to forge a path toward housing stability that breaks generational cycles. As a response, our clinical program team introduced a variety of initiatives specific to supporting mental health for infants and children of all ages.
We partner with The Green Beret Youth Initiative, which works with youth ages 8-14 years to develop character, commitment, and discipline. The program focuses on physical fitness, nutrition, and mentoring to teach problem-solving, decision-making, and assertiveness, which will lead to behaviors that positively influence the attitudes and norms of the community. Active and retired US Green Berets coach the children and support the development of individual strengths as well as building self-esteem. Group sessions held one Saturday a month help children develop communication skills, accomplish individual goals, and provide guidance on planning education and career goals. We are excited to see this popular program engaging children whose families no longer live on our campus but continue to participate with our offerings beyond the emergency housing crisis they experienced.
We plan to expand this effort to include younger children by engaging early childhood education and mental health professionals in developing and designing age-appropriate organized play, fitness and motor skills development, confidence building, independence, and nurturing a sense of belonging.
