Project Title: Project Pajamas and Books: Bringing Comfort & Literacy to Vulnerable Children
Project Description:

Since 2013, Project Pajamas and Books has been a community-driven initiative aimed at providing over 67,000 vulnerable children with the comfort of new pajamas and the joy of reading through the gift of books. The project seeks to address the dual needs of comfort and literacy for children facing difficult circumstances, such as those in foster care, homeless shelters, and low-income households.

Through donations from generous individuals, local businesses, and corporate sponsors, Project Pajamas and Books distributes brand-new pajamas and age-appropriate books to children in need. Pajamas provide physical comfort, offering children a sense of security and warmth, while books help foster imagination, education, and a love of reading—tools that empower children to break free from cycles of hardship.

This project not only supports emotional well-being but also promotes early literacy by ensuring that every child has access to books that nurture curiosity, creativity, and learning. Our mission is to bring smiles to children’s faces while helping to lay the foundation for their future academic success and overall well-being.

We work closely with schools, shelters, and local child welfare organizations to identify children who would benefit most from these gifts. The project aims to make a lasting impact by offering both immediate comfort and long-term educational benefits to the most vulnerable members of our community.

By providing these simple yet powerful gifts, Project Pajamas and Books hopes to inspire a sense of hope, dignity, and belonging in every child it touches. Your generous donation would provide at least 250 children in need with a pair of pajamas and book to call their own.

Total Project Budget: $178,490

Today’s Date: March 27, 2025
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Brake The Cycle of Absenteeism
Project Description:

At Good Karma Bikes, we believe every kid should have a bike—that’s why we grant them free, every day. Our "Break the Cycle of Absenteeism" Program ensures that transportation is never a barrier for low-income youth striving to succeed in school and beyond.

This program specifically targets students who struggle to get to school and participate in extracurricular activities due to financial hardship. Many of these students come from single-parent households where parents work multiple jobs or have schedules that make it difficult to provide reliable transportation. Without a way to get to school consistently, students are at a much higher risk of chronic absenteeism, which negatively impacts their academic success and future opportunities.

By granting them a bike, we empower kids with a safe, independent, and reliable way to stay engaged in their education and community.

A prime example of this program’s success comes from a Palo Alto school that reported a 55% absenteeism rate among a group of chronically absent students. In response, we provided 48 students with bikes, ensuring they had a dependable mode of transportation to school. The results were immediate—all but 11 students rode their bikes to school regularly, and the absenteeism rate dropped to 21%.

Beyond school attendance, our program also focuses on overall youth wellness. We collaborate with local clinics serving medical families to support children’s health and encourage outdoor activity. By providing bikes, we help kids stay active, reduce screen time, and improve their physical and mental well-being.

For many students, a bike is more than just a mode of transportation—it’s a symbol of opportunity and freedom. It fosters independence, builds confidence, and, most importantly, helps break the cycle of absenteeism that holds so many children back from reaching their full potential.

Project Title: School based therapy
Project Description:

At Charleston Hope, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential—academically, emotionally, and socially. Our school-based therapy programs provide critical mental and behavioral health services to students—many of whom have experienced trauma, poverty, and other significant barriers to success. By embedding licensed clinical therapists and graduate-level interns directly into Title 1 schools, we remove the access, transportation, and financial barriers that so often prevent children from receiving the support they need.

Our model focuses on early intervention, emotional regulation, and long-term resilience. Through weekly one-on-one and small group sessions, we help students develop healthy coping skills, build emotional literacy, and strengthen their capacity to thrive inside and outside the classroom. We also collaborate closely with parents, teachers, and school staff to ensure each child is surrounded by a strong, informed support system.

Charleston Hope’s programs directly reflect The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s commitment to improving and transforming the lives of children and young adults by providing the tools they need to succeed—starting with their mental and emotional health. Our work spans health, education, and welfare services, creating a comprehensive, collaborative, and sustainable approach to empowering students to achieve their full potential.

Today’s Date: 3/27/2025

Project Title: Books for Bright Beginnings: Reach Out and Read
Project Description:

Did you know that simply being exposed to books as early as infancy helps children not only learn to read but also understand key concepts like front to back, left to right, and top to bottom? Located in Grand Forks, ND, 41 dedicated pediatric and primary care providers across our clinics proudly distribute an average of 30 books every day! From infancy to age 5, pediatric patients receive a free, developmentally appropriate book during well-child visits—adding up to 10 books over their first five years of life. With more than 5,000 children receiving books in 2024 and over 72,000 books distributed over the program’s 20 years, we are helping families incorporate books into their daily routines.

Providers actively engage parents by emphasizing the importance of talking, singing, reading, and playing with their infants—simple yet powerful activities that support early brain development, strengthen family connections, and nurture a lifelong love of reading and learning. Reading to children from an early age is one of the most effective ways to enhance cognitive development and language acquisition.
Altru serves a diverse and growing community, including individuals from Laotian, Vietnamese, Native American, Somali, Nepalese, and Hispanic backgrounds, among many others. Many speak English as a second language or are non-English speakers, while their children often learn English as their primary language. This program helps bridge that gap by providing families with a free and meaningful way to bond, learn, and grow together.

The foundation of early literacy not only equips children for academic success but also nurtures curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking skills that support lifelong growth. Your support ensures that every child, regardless of socioeconomic background, has access to the tools they need to thrive.

Total Project Budget: 7,000 per year

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): In the past, Altru benefited from a partnership with Target Corporation, which provided crucial funding until 2016, when their support was discontinued. Since then, the program has relied on the generosity of local donors, with significant contributions from local supporters such as the Myra Foundation and Walmart. The Altru Health Foundation continues to cultivate relationships with donors and purses grant opportunities to keep this invaluable program thriving. To ensure the continued success of Reach Out and Read in Grand Forks, we are committed to expanding our funding strategies, seeking new partnerships, and engaging with the community such as through our recent book drive to secure the necessary resources. Through these methods we aim to maintain and grow the program, providing essential literacy resources to children in our community for years to come. Committed for 2025: University of North Dakota committed funds from their Staff Senate Jeans Give Back Program for 2025 which is approximately $1,000.

Today’s Date: 27 March 2025
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Provide life-changing advocates for children in foster care
Project Description:

“I work for you.” That is what the CASA Advocate told Darren the first time they met. The boy had already been introduced to a string of new people and was anxious. The CASA wanted to reassure him that he was not one of many on her caseload – he was the only one on it. All her work would be for his sake. When she talked to him, it was to get to know him and find out what he needed. When she talked to his family, foster parents, and school – it was on his behalf. She was going to take everything she learned and be Darren’s voice in court to help ensure that he was safe and healthy, and that he would spend as little time in foster care as possible.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for children in foster care. Each child is unique, and so are their circumstances. That’s why Darren needs a CASA Advocate – someone to stand by his side and ensure that all the things he needs to heal and thrive are provided. The CASA becomes the eyes, ears, and heart of the court for Darren. With a CASA report in hand, the judge has a much clearer picture of Darren and can make better decisions about his future.

The need for CASA Advocates is plainly evident in the research: kids with CASAs receive more medical and emotional support, do better in school, and find safe, permanent homes faster. Research also shows that kids with CASAs are more hopeful. And when kids have hope, outcomes improve. They have more academic success, enhanced well-being, increased self-control, positive social relationships, and optimism – tools they need to heal and recover.

No other organization provides this service and we do not charge fees.

By increasing our donor base each year, Sweet Dream Makers maintains its commitment to fulfilling 100% of validated requests for new beds and bedding packages received from 175 referral partners and through our in-house case manager who oversees individual requests.

A new mattress and box spring or memory foam mattress
A mattress encasement to protect against bed bugs and bed-wetting, common among children affected by trauma

Project Title: Quest Kids Scholarships
Project Description:

Quest’s mission is to help people with developmental disabilities experience a full life. For over 60 years, Quest has transformed the lives of thousands of adults and children with developmental and intellectual disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other diagnoses through a range of customized services proven to increase capabilities and quality of life. This starts with Quest Kids programs. Quest Kids Therapy serves children ages 15 months – 18 years old, utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) early intervention therapy. This personalized therapy helps prepare young children for school by incorporating academics and classroom skills into behavioral goals.

Quest Kids Academy enrolls children starting at age five and extends through 21. Student/Teacher ratios vary between 6:1 to 2:1 with customized curriculum levels built for learners of every age and ability. When a child turns 14, they move into the Quest for Living program to focus on building vocational, independent living, and life skills. Graduating students are better prepared for their transition to adulthood.

When a family receives a diagnosis for their child, they want answers immediately. When they turn to Quest, the teams work closely with the families to put together an individualized plan with wraparound services. Often, these plans are derailed due to financial limitations and/or insurance difficulties. Quest started the Scholarship Program to assist these families.

Quest is respectfully seeking $7,500 to provide therapy and tuition scholarships to low-income students with developmental disabilities, ensuring healthcare and education is accessible to everyone, regardless of financial status. To confirm funds are going to families with the highest need, all applications and financial documents are reviewed by the internal scholarship committee. Scholarships are used to help children start therapy quicker, prevent interruptions in services, receive the recommended amount, and cover academy tuition.

A new mattress and box spring or memory foam mattress
A mattress encasement to protect against bed bugs and bed-wetting, common among children affected by trauma
A bed frame or platform
Bedding, including sheets, comforters chosen by the children, and fresh pillows

A good night’s sleep helps children wake refreshed and ready to tackle school and life’s challenges.

Thanks to our generous donors, we ensure that no family is turned away.
