Project Title: STEM After-school Program for Low-income Students
Project Description:

The Archangel Foundation is dedicated to providing immersive STEM experiences to historically disadvantaged students in the greater Miami area, empowering them to pursue academic success and explore career opportunities. Through strong partnerships with local youth organizations and schools, we offer a proven and proprietary STEM program designed by highly educated instructors to foster curiosity and academic excellence through after-school programs and enrichment field trips.

Our STEM after-school programs serve students from low-income households in Miami’s historically marginalized communities, including predominantly Black and Hispanic populations. These students often face systemic challenges, such as underfunded schools, limited access to enrichment programs, and economic barriers that impede their educational growth. By offering free or low-cost STEM education in subjects such as engineering, robotics, and electronics, the Archangel Foundation aims to break down these barriers and provide these students with opportunities to succeed academically and professionally. Our afterschool programs bridge the achievement gap through hands-on curriculum that promotes creative problem solving, boosting graduation rates and college enrollment for students who participate.

The Archangel Foundation envisions a future where all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, have access to the tools and support they need to succeed in school and beyond. By providing low-income students with access to transformative STEM education, we are laying the groundwork for greater economic mobility, enhanced college readiness, and more diverse representation in STEM fields. Our efforts will not only help break the cycle of poverty but also contribute to the creation of a more equitable and inclusive workforce, ensuring that students from all communities have the chance to realize their full potential.

Project Title: GRANDfamilies Kinship Care
Project Description:

When children can no longer safely reside with their parents, placement with relatives or close family friends is usually the most beneficial option. Research indicates that children in kinship care situations have far better outcomes than those cared for by strangers: they experience improved behavioral and mental health, greater placement stability, and a stronger sense of family connection.

Kinship caregivers often assume their role under challenging circumstances, with little advance notice. The children often have been exposed to abuse, neglect, or parental substance abuse, and suffer from unaddressed trauma as a result. Caregivers generally face financial hardship and may struggle to appropriately care for traumatized children. Without support, the children are at increased risk for developing substance use disorders or mental health issues. To address the unique needs of these families, CSS’ GRANDfamilies program provides comprehensive support services that include the following:

• Case Management: Guidance and support to navigate complex systems, obtain guardianship if desired, access community resources, obtain health insurance, and develop effective care plans.

• Psycho-educational Groups: Ten-week workshops for caregivers, adolescents, and children are held concurrently, four times each year, to build coping skills, knowledge, and support networks.

• Botvin LifeSkills Training: Evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs for youth.

• Friend 2 Friends: Social events and activities that foster community and connection.

• Clinical Services: Trauma-informed clinical mental health services for children and adults, available at no cost, to support social and emotional competence and reduce trauma-related mental health symptoms

Through these services, GRANDfamilies aims to strengthen kinship families, improve child outcomes, and reduce the impact of adversity. Services are provided in our main Salt Lake office, and in our satellite offices in Tooele, Davis, Weber, Cache, Uintah, Box Elder, Washington, and Utah counties. Services are also available virtually to meet the needs of rural clients.

Project Title: STEM Industry Professional Development Trips for Connecticut Educators
Project Description:

In the modern landscape where ever-evolving tech changes every industry, students need up-to-date STEM curricula to succeed, but the rapid pace of change is extremely difficult to keep up with at the scale of a school district. If, however, teachers can see and understand industry changes firsthand, they can bring that knowledge to bear on their curricula, improving STEM education at the classroom level. ESTEM will provide an opportunity to do so at no cost to Connecticut educators.

A recent Virginia Tech study provided evidence that K-12 teachers who undertook four-week summer externships at STEM industry workplaces demonstrated improved understanding of the subject matter they teach and commitment to creating learning experiences for their students with real-world context. ESTEM will provide a series of professional development experiences that are comparable in scope, but integrate more smoothly with schools’ and teachers’ schedules.

For each series, ESTEM will partner with a Connecticut school and nearby businesses to facilitate workplace visits for educators. Once a month, for five months, 10–15 teachers will attend a trip to a nearby STEM-focused business and learn how modern tech is applied there. Each site visit will be a visual and interactive endeavor followed by a community discussion and learning session on how to bring this experience back to classrooms. To make this program as accessible as possible, participating teachers will receive a stipend to attend and a meal each visit.

Funding from the Charles & Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will support the cost of one of these series, which can be scaled down by one or two site visits based on secured funding, lessening the cost by approximately $2,000 per subtracted visit. The Other Funding information below reflects funding for these series in FY2025, and provides an approximate picture of the funding ESTEM will request in FY2026.

Project Title: Supporting the CACFP Food Program through Local Farm Partnerships
Project Description:

As federal funding for the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) becomes uncertain, the Chatham County Partnership for Children seeks support to ensure local child care centers and homes continue to provide nutritious meals to children. We propose establishing partnerships with local farms to supply fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat to meet USDA meal requirements. Research shows that healthy nutrition is directly linked to better cognitive development, improved focus, and long-term academic success, making this initiative crucial for early childhood learning. This project will ensure consistent access to healthy food, support local agriculture, and alleviate the impact of rising food costs on child care providers. With your support, we can help maintain the integrity of the CACFP program, ensuring children receive the nutrition they need to thrive academically and benefit the local community.

Project Title: Helping Youth Thrive After Homelessness
Project Description:

Solid Ground’s Sand Point Housing campus in North Seattle provides safe housing and wraparound, onsite supportive services for up to 400 community members recovering from homelessness each year – nearly half of whom are children, youth, and young adults. Sand Point’s Children’s Program serves the unique needs of close to 200 children, youth, and young adults who call our campus home. All children come from families living on low incomes and the majority have other Adverse Childhood and Community Experiences (ACEs), such as exposure to violence, mental health or substance use disorders, and other trauma.
We believe that family members of all ages deserve individualized support to overcome barriers to thriving, so Sand Point’s Children’s Program combines youth-focused advocacy with robust onsite programming and partnerships designed to engage and empower our youngest residents as the learners, leaders, and architects of thriving futures. Beginning with basic needs, our dedicated Children’s staff work to support nutrition, clothing, and school enrollment, while implementing regular programming and community partnerships to provide daily afterschool tutoring, social-emotional skill development, 1:1 mentorship, career exploration, college prep, summer meals, and more. We also enjoy strong partnerships with local public schools, the Seattle Public Library, and other youth-focused organizations that enable us to make referrals for behavioral health, enrichment activities, and other resources to establish a village of supporters who believe and invest in our young people’s future success.
If awarded, your grant would support key program costs that allow us to sustain and expand our range of onsite youth services in response to families’ identified needs, ensuring that youth’s community of support adapts and grows with them as they age. Grant funds would specifically go toward program staffing, partnership costs, and supplies to sustain these vital services for youth in the coming year.

The vast majority of our Children’s programming relies on individual and foundation support to sustain our services – if awarded, your grant funds would help us to ensure that offerings like afterschool tutoring, college & career readiness, and teen programming are able to continue uninterrupted.

Project Description:

The Bijou Theatre’s Imagination Series is a cherished arts education program that brings high-quality, professional theatrical performances to school-age children across East Tennessee. Hosted in Knoxville’s historic Bijou Theatre—recognized by The New York Times as one of the best-sounding rooms in America—the series often provides students with their very first live performing arts experience.

Central to the Bijou’s mission, the Imagination Series partners with schools and community organizations to offer immersive field trip experiences. Project Title: Technical Theatre Training for Under-Resourced Youth
Project Description:

Each summer, La Jolla Playhouse’s Technical Theatre Training program equips under-resourced youth – including those incarcerated, transient, homeless, or in foster care – with vocational skills that increase opportunity. Young people thrive when provided resources to learn, grow, and build independence. Students with in-depth arts involvement tend to be more tolerant and empathetic, have better careers, show higher civic engagement, and are 15% more likely to attend a selective four-year college (National Endowment for the Arts).

Through this program, the Playhouse provides at-risk youth a creative outlet for self-expression, hands-on experience in theatre production and design, and mentorship that builds transferable skills. Students develop problem-solving, collaboration, and risk-taking abilities in a safe, supportive environment. Longterm, they gain confidence, community belonging, and an understanding of the arts’ societal impact. Now in its eleventh year, the program has served more than 400 students, with 40 participants annually. Over three to five weeks during the summer, students participate in week-long intensive sessions aligned with Common Core and National Core Arts Standards, training seven hours daily on the La Jolla Playhouse campus.

The Summer 2025 session of Technical Theatre Training has an anticipated budget of $60,050. Each session is facilitated by a San Diego-based Playhouse Artist Instructor and a $5,000 grant from the Hermanowski Foundation would cover a portion of the fees for the lead teaching artists. Mentorship between students and teaching artists is key, fostering engagement, inclusion, and creative growth. Beyond the professional experience that each teaching artist brings to the program, students are mentored by artists at the top of their field—witnessing their skills and learning from their expertise

Project Title: Kids On The Rise Enrichment Activities
Project Description:

Kids on the Rise is a non-profit organization whos mission is to provide experiences for youth that will enable them to further develop their intellectual, social, verbal, and creative capacities and to facilitate their entry into a responsible, productive adulthood. The primary method used to fulfil this mission is through adult-child mentoring. Children referred to the program by counselors or teachers based upon need for structure, academic support, compassionate care and love. Children are matched with a caring, supportive mentor who meets with the child weekly, primarily outside of school hours. Mentors, students, and parents decide on the specific schedule and activities relative to their availability and interests. The focus is on building a relationship, so the student has a trusted, consistent adult who encourages healthy, positive choices and development of life skills. We believe that children are most likely to reach their full potential when they have positive adult support.

This funding will provide group activities throughout the school year. These activities nurture the bonds between the students and mentors, teach students new skills and information, and expose them to experiences they might not otherwise have access to. Activities focus on enriching and expanding students’ knowledge, skills, and worldviews. Funding provides us the ability to continue to provide these trips to the students and their mentors at no cost to them as it covers all travel expenses and materials for each activity.
