Project Title: GRANDfamilies Kinship Care
Project Description:
When children can no longer safely reside with their parents, placement with relatives or close family friends is usually the most beneficial option. Research indicates that children in kinship care situations have far better outcomes than those cared for by strangers: they experience improved behavioral and mental health, greater placement stability, and a stronger sense of family connection.
Kinship caregivers often assume their role under challenging circumstances, with little advance notice. The children often have been exposed to abuse, neglect, or parental substance abuse, and suffer from unaddressed trauma as a result. Caregivers generally face financial hardship and may struggle to appropriately care for traumatized children. Without support, the children are at increased risk for developing substance use disorders or mental health issues. To address the unique needs of these families, CSS’ GRANDfamilies program provides comprehensive support services that include the following:
• Case Management: Guidance and support to navigate complex systems, obtain guardianship if desired, access community resources, obtain health insurance, and develop effective care plans.
• Psycho-educational Groups: Ten-week workshops for caregivers, adolescents, and children are held concurrently, four times each year, to build coping skills, knowledge, and support networks.
• Botvin LifeSkills Training: Evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs for youth.
• Friend 2 Friends: Social events and activities that foster community and connection.
• Clinical Services: Trauma-informed clinical mental health services for children and adults, available at no cost, to support social and emotional competence and reduce trauma-related mental health symptoms
Through these services, GRANDfamilies aims to strengthen kinship families, improve child outcomes, and reduce the impact of adversity. Services are provided in our main Salt Lake office, and in our satellite offices in Tooele, Davis, Weber, Cache, Uintah, Box Elder, Washington, and Utah counties. Services are also available virtually to meet the needs of rural clients.
