Project Title: Providing Life-Changing River Expeditions to the Next Generation
Project Description:

The Charles & Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s mission to improve and transform the lives of children in the U.S. in hopes of providing them with the necessary tools to succeed and achieve their full potential dovetails nicely with Grand Canyon Youth’s (GCY’s) mission to offer educational outdoor expeditions that connect young people to the transformative power of the rivers and canyons of the Southwest. Through our programs, we work to empower youth to live with purpose while discovering and caring for self, community, and the natural world. GCY would be thrilled to receive support from your foundation, enabling us to transform the lives of the next generation of young people TOGETHER.

Since 1998, GCY has served over 13,500 young people (aged 10-19) from across the country. Our outdoor programs are progressively tiered to encourage participation at any experience level: from 1-day kayaking expeditions for elementary school youth, to multi-day rafting trips for middle schoolers, to multi-week expeditions down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon for high school students. Youth participate in every aspect of our expeditions, from paddling the boats through rapids, unloading gear and setting up camp, doing hands-on science and art, cooking healthy group meals, hiking side canyons, swimming in the river, and sleeping under the stars. Customized curriculums are facilitated by experts who join our expeditions, including field scientists, artists, land managers, park rangers, and professional outdoor guides. On our screen-free expeditions, youth have the opportunity to build confidence and community by facing challenges independently and as a team, which is so important for today’s young people. To ensure cost is not a barrier to participation, GCY offsets expedition costs through year-round fundraising, and we offer youth applicants additional direct financial aid.

Would you consider supporting our 2026 expedition season with a $10,000 grant?

Project Title: Outdoor Adventure School
Project Description:

CFI is an outdoor education nonprofit based in Moab, UT whose mission is to cultivate connection to self, community, and nature by creating inclusive educational pathways to the outdoors. We specialize in running immersive, multi-day camp and river rafting programs for over 700 youth annually. Most of this work happens through the Outdoor Adventure School, a program which works with schools from across the country to get their students learning in the field. Through lessons on the natural science and human history of the Colorado Plateau, students learn leadership, team building, and communication skills which carry far beyond their time with CFI.

Founded in 1984, CFI’s curriculum is guided by 40 years of experience in the field as well as the research being done by UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science BEETLES Project to create a learning experience suited for a broad range of learning styles. Our programs are completely unplugged so students can fully immerse themselves in the experience of being in a natural space with their peers free from the distractions of technology. Schools have seven land or river-based programs to choose from ranging in duration from three to seven days, allowing teachers to pick the challenge level best suited to their students. Our river trips take place between the San Juan, Colorado, and Green Rivers, with our land programs operating out of CFI’s Professor Valley Field Camp (PVFC) about 40 minutes east of Moab.

Fees paid for by schools cover roughly 50% of the program costs with CFI underwriting the rest through grants and donations.

Project Title: DreamBig Performers
Project Description:

DreamBig Performers is a transformative youth initiative developed by Ebony Road Players to address the theater industry’s systemic imbalances in opportunities and funding, which disproportionately favor white individuals and institutions. Research reveals that the majority of theater contracts and financial resources flow to these institutions, leaving Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) largely underrepresented both onstage and behind the scenes.

Structured in three parts, the program begins with a Story2Stage summer camp where participants craft their own narratives and learn the fundamentals of theatrical production. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, they develop storytelling skills, collaborate with peers, and gain confidence performing for an audience. This immersive experience lays the groundwork for their creative growth.

The second stage is a five-day workshop bridging the summer camp and the fall production. Its focus is on vocal techniques, stage production basics, and understanding venue acoustics, culminating in a mock audition. Emphasizing music, this workshop keeps participants engaged while they refine the skills acquired during the camp and prepare for the final phase.

Part three features a youth-oriented fall production showcasing the talents of camp alumni. By welcoming participants from diverse backgrounds, DreamBig Performers fosters cultural understanding and offers a platform for young artists to bring their creative visions to life. Through these three integrated stages, the program not only counters systemic inequities but also empowers aspiring performers to shape a more inclusive and dynamic future in theater.

Project Title: Emergency & Supportive Housing Services for Families
Project Description:

Joseph’s House & Shelter addresses the critical need for stable, affordable housing for individuals, families, and children. Safe housing fosters healthy behaviors, social connections, and a sense of belonging. All funds are strategically allocated to provide 24/7 case management, individualized advocacy, and access to secure housing.
The Urban Institute’s 2024 report, How Housing Instability Affects Children’s Health and Development, highlights that stable housing leads to better educational, health, and economic outcomes. Housing instability increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and poor health, while also disrupting school attendance and social connections. Children without stable housing face developmental delays and behavioral challenges. Additionally, homelessness often prevents timely medical care, worsening health conditions.
Our programs directly support families by providing essential housing and advocacy. Stable housing transforms lives, fostering healthier outcomes on both individual and community levels. The Emergency Family Shelter provides temporary housing for families in Rensselaer County, while the Rapid Rehousing / Resettlement program assists homeless households living in motels, working to quickly secure permanent housing. These programs ensure immediate safety, access to basic needs such as food, clothing, and medical referrals, and connection to community resources, reducing the harmful effects of housing loss.
The Supportive Housing Bethune program offers casework and advocacy for families with a head of household who has a documented disability. Stable housing allows children to attend school consistently, build lasting friendships, and thrive in a familiar environment, supporting academic success and emotional well-being.
By prioritizing housing stability, we create a foundation for addressing underlying health concerns. Our work helps clients manage chronic conditions and improves overall health outcomes for families and the broader community.

Project Title: Funding Central Oregon Programing
Project Description:

Arts for Learning Northwest (ALNW) is committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of location, have access to high-quality arts education. In Central Oregon, many schools face financial barriers that limit their ability to bring arts programming into the classroom. While there is a strong need for arts integration in this region, limited local funding means that schools often struggle to afford these valuable experiences for their students. ALNW is seeking support to subsidize programming costs, making it possible for more schools in Central Oregon to benefit from our arts education initiatives.

By securing additional funding, ALNW can provide schools with free or low-cost artist residencies, workshops, and other creative learning opportunities. These programs not only enrich students’ educational experiences but also support social-emotional development, creative thinking, and engagement in learning. Many Central Oregon schools have expressed interest in working with ALNW, but without financial assistance, participation remains out of reach for many. With the right support, we can ensure that students in this region have equitable access to the arts, just like their peers in more well-funded districts.

Contributions will directly support artist stipends, materials, and program delivery, allowing ALNW to expand its impact in Central Oregon. By investing in arts education, we are investing in students’ creativity, confidence, and future success. Please join us in making the arts accessible to all students, regardless of financial barriers.

Project Title: Writers in the Schools
Project Description:

300 words

ChatGPT said:
Here’s an expanded version of your text with a word count closer to 300:

Seattle Arts & Lectures (SAL) is dedicated to fostering literacy and a deep love for writing as a lifelong journey. This journey begins in our public schools and extends to the broader community through our public stages, ensuring that the power of words is accessible to all. By engaging students and educators with professional writers, SAL’s youth programs aim to inspire creativity, amplify student voices, and cultivate the next generation of storytellers throughout the Puget Sound region.

One of SAL’s cornerstone programs, Writers in the Schools (WITS), brings professional local writers into K-12 public school classrooms for extended creative writing residencies. Established in 1994, WITS has impacted more than 150,000 students, providing them with invaluable opportunities to express themselves through writing and performance. These residencies create a dynamic learning environment where students can explore their ideas, experiment with language, and refine their unique voices under the guidance of experienced writers.

At its core, WITS is about empowering young people to become confident communicators and storytellers. Through mentorship and hands-on creative writing experiences, students gain not only technical writing skills but also the confidence to share their perspectives with the world. Whether through poetry, fiction, memoir, or spoken word, students learn that their words have power and that their stories matter.

Beyond the classroom, WITS fosters a broader culture of literary engagement by offering public readings and publication opportunities for students. These experiences allow young writers to see their work celebrated and recognized, reinforcing their creative potential. By bridging the gap between education and the arts, WITS transforms classrooms into spaces of inspiration, self-expression, and discovery, ensuring that every student has the chance to become the author of their own life story.

Project Title: Unaccompanied Children Program
Project Description:

Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy (CCLA) provides legal services to vulnerable populations in the Charlotte region to ensure that everyone has access to justice. Among those most vulnerable to exploitation in our community are immigrant children and their families, who face serious issues including human trafficking, domestic abuse and discrimination. Vital services for victims are often out of reach for those whose immigration status is insecure. CCLA offers legal support to unaccompanied migrant children under 18, both by providing direct legal representation as well as conducting legal orientations, known as “Know Your Rights” clinics, to migrant children who cross the border alone and are in federal government shelters.

In March 2025, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services terminated nearly all government contracts funding such legal work, which severely impacts CCLA’s Unaccompanied Children Program, affecting more than 300 active cases. Due to this funding cut, the Advocacy Center does not have the financial resources needed for these current cases when these children go to immigration court, and we cannot take on new cases. Hundreds of immigrant children, many of whom have suffered abuse, neglect, abandonment and other forms of harm, will be left defenseless and without adequate legal representation.

It is virtually impossible for a child to understand their legal options or successfully navigate complex legal proceedings alone, without a specialized children’s rights attorney. According to the Congressional Research Service in 2021, attorneys have a dramatic impact on children’s cases; immigration judges were almost 100 times more likely to grant legal relief to unaccompanied children with counsel than to those without. Most clients served by our Immigrant Justice Program are under age 18. These cases are ongoing, and the Advocacy Center is seeking diverse sources of funding to safeguard these children’s right to safety and stability.
