Project Title: Emergency & Supportive Housing Services for Families
Project Description:

Joseph’s House & Shelter addresses the critical need for stable, affordable housing for individuals, families, and children. Safe housing fosters healthy behaviors, social connections, and a sense of belonging. All funds are strategically allocated to provide 24/7 case management, individualized advocacy, and access to secure housing.
The Urban Institute’s 2024 report, How Housing Instability Affects Children’s Health and Development, highlights that stable housing leads to better educational, health, and economic outcomes. Housing instability increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and poor health, while also disrupting school attendance and social connections. Children without stable housing face developmental delays and behavioral challenges. Additionally, homelessness often prevents timely medical care, worsening health conditions.
Our programs directly support families by providing essential housing and advocacy. Stable housing transforms lives, fostering healthier outcomes on both individual and community levels. The Emergency Family Shelter provides temporary housing for families in Rensselaer County, while the Rapid Rehousing / Resettlement program assists homeless households living in motels, working to quickly secure permanent housing. These programs ensure immediate safety, access to basic needs such as food, clothing, and medical referrals, and connection to community resources, reducing the harmful effects of housing loss.
The Supportive Housing Bethune program offers casework and advocacy for families with a head of household who has a documented disability. Stable housing allows children to attend school consistently, build lasting friendships, and thrive in a familiar environment, supporting academic success and emotional well-being.
By prioritizing housing stability, we create a foundation for addressing underlying health concerns. Our work helps clients manage chronic conditions and improves overall health outcomes for families and the broader community.
