Project Title: Outdoor Adventure School
Project Description:
CFI is an outdoor education nonprofit based in Moab, UT whose mission is to cultivate connection to self, community, and nature by creating inclusive educational pathways to the outdoors. We specialize in running immersive, multi-day camp and river rafting programs for over 700 youth annually. Most of this work happens through the Outdoor Adventure School, a program which works with schools from across the country to get their students learning in the field. Through lessons on the natural science and human history of the Colorado Plateau, students learn leadership, team building, and communication skills which carry far beyond their time with CFI.
Founded in 1984, CFI’s curriculum is guided by 40 years of experience in the field as well as the research being done by UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science BEETLES Project to create a learning experience suited for a broad range of learning styles. Our programs are completely unplugged so students can fully immerse themselves in the experience of being in a natural space with their peers free from the distractions of technology. Schools have seven land or river-based programs to choose from ranging in duration from three to seven days, allowing teachers to pick the challenge level best suited to their students. Our river trips take place between the San Juan, Colorado, and Green Rivers, with our land programs operating out of CFI’s Professor Valley Field Camp (PVFC) about 40 minutes east of Moab.
Fees paid for by schools cover roughly 50% of the program costs with CFI underwriting the rest through grants and donations.
