Project Title: Equine assisted therapy
Project Description:

We are an equine assisted therapy organization that helps children and their families heal, learn, and grow through the power the of the human-animal connection, regardless of ability to pay for services. Our primary service that we offer is individual equine assisted therapy. This novel approach to therapy lends itself to working with those who have been hardest to reach and thus not able to fully benefit from traditional talk therapy. In turn, we work with a lot of low-income families as well as foster care youth because those hardest to reach often closely correlates with those who do not have the funds to pay for services. We currently serve about 15 youth through our individual equine assisted therapy program, and offer 1/3 of those services at a discounted rate anywhere from 25% to 75% reduction in fees. This grant would allow us to continue to offer our services to these families at a discounted rate by offsetting the cost for our services.

Project Title: Soapbox Seattle Community-Based Youth Education
Project Description:

Youth mental health is being severely impacted by the climate crisis to the point where 80% of youth feel anxious and HALF of youth report that they’re no longer able to function as normal on a daily basis.

Simultaneously, we’re seeing the loneliness epidemic worsen in the USA, and young people are not being given the community structures to connect with their values, themselves, and the solutions that need their creativity.

Cities NEED joyful community spaces where young adults can transform their climate anxiety, loneliness, and powerlessness, into meaningful action: that’s what Soapbox Seattle is building.

Young adults—our future leaders—need spaces where they can connect, learn from, and take action led by today’s experts.

Soapbox Seattle is requesting $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to invest in our youth programs: at no cost to them, high school & college age students will:

1️⃣ Participate in conversations with an intergenerational group of Seattleites dedicated to making our city joyful, resilient, and safe for future generations. There are currently ZERO spaces in Seattle where power is circulated towards young adults. Youth programs aren’t enough: we need to actively pass on networks, introductions, and resources to young adults by bringing them into “professional” spaces where powerful people hang out!!

2️⃣ Learn about a variety of climate solutions through facilitated, bite-sized education. Today’s youth report extreme anxiety from their high school/college environmental science classes. Soapbox’s speciality is to teach climate solutions in a way that doesn’t overwhelm you, because we immediately show you how YOU can be part of the solution!

3️⃣ Take action that improves our local community. Action is the antidote to anxiety, and Soapbox’s climate action centers art, music, food, and joy!

Young adults who hang out at Soapbox Seattle will also be given the opportunity to build skills in art, music, plant-based cooking, facilitation, event organization, conflict management, and more!

Project Title: Start Strong: Early Literacy Support for Teachers and Students
Project Description:

"Start Strong" is designed to address the critical needs of preschool and early elementary educators by providing them with essential literacy resources, classroom materials, and support for their students. Recognizing the social determinants that affect a child’s ability to learn to read—such as access to books, home literacy environments, and economic disparities—this program ensures that educators in underserved communities have the tools they need to foster strong literacy foundations.

Through partnerships with local nonprofits, schools, and community organizations, Treasures 4 Teachers will offer teachers discounted or free access to age-appropriate books, early literacy tools, and classroom materials specifically tailored to the developmental needs of young children. Additionally, the program will provide training and workshops for educators to better understand the social factors that impact literacy, empowering them to create supportive, equitable learning environments.

Project Title: Scholarship for Freshman Finances
Project Description:

The Look Back Give Back Foundation was created to give back to African-American high school students who want to further their education in college but face considerable socio-economic hardships. Since 2020, the Look Back Give Back Foundation has helped talented African-American students reach their educational goals and attain professional success through a wide range of need-based scholarships.

We respectfully request funding support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation, which will help bolster our mission to aid academically promising African-American students who, as incoming freshmen, face financial barriers to higher education. We believe this request aligns well with your organizational goals of supporting non-profit organizations that improve the lives of children and young adults by helping them reach their potential.

Every student deserves a chance to further their education, and we understand many students face socio-economic hardships that prevent them from attending institutions of higher learning, which can be overcome through scholarship and hard work. With the support of the Hermanoski Foundation, we intend to create a scholarship for one student, wherein that student would receive $6,000 to use for tuition, books, and supplies in their first year of college.
