Project Title: Soapbox Seattle Community-Based Youth Education
Project Description:

Youth mental health is being severely impacted by the climate crisis to the point where 80% of youth feel anxious and HALF of youth report that they’re no longer able to function as normal on a daily basis.

Simultaneously, we’re seeing the loneliness epidemic worsen in the USA, and young people are not being given the community structures to connect with their values, themselves, and the solutions that need their creativity.

Cities NEED joyful community spaces where young adults can transform their climate anxiety, loneliness, and powerlessness, into meaningful action: that’s what Soapbox Seattle is building.

Young adults—our future leaders—need spaces where they can connect, learn from, and take action led by today’s experts.

Soapbox Seattle is requesting $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to invest in our youth programs: at no cost to them, high school & college age students will:

1️⃣ Participate in conversations with an intergenerational group of Seattleites dedicated to making our city joyful, resilient, and safe for future generations. There are currently ZERO spaces in Seattle where power is circulated towards young adults. Youth programs aren’t enough: we need to actively pass on networks, introductions, and resources to young adults by bringing them into “professional” spaces where powerful people hang out!!

2️⃣ Learn about a variety of climate solutions through facilitated, bite-sized education. Today’s youth report extreme anxiety from their high school/college environmental science classes. Soapbox’s speciality is to teach climate solutions in a way that doesn’t overwhelm you, because we immediately show you how YOU can be part of the solution!

3️⃣ Take action that improves our local community. Action is the antidote to anxiety, and Soapbox’s climate action centers art, music, food, and joy!

Young adults who hang out at Soapbox Seattle will also be given the opportunity to build skills in art, music, plant-based cooking, facilitation, event organization, conflict management, and more!
