Project Title: $10000
Project Description:

Josh said “I’d never seen artists working before – it was so cool to see the shapes coming from the stone.  It’s amazing that someone could do that with their hands. I even talked to the artist – a man all the way from Africa!”  This is just one reaction from the 3000 students who have had the experience of visiting ZimSculpt at the Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Garden in 2022.

ZimSculpt, an exhibition of hand-carved stone is returning to Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens in February of 2025. Coming from Zimbabwe to North America just once a year, this exhibition features thousands of sculptures created by over 300 artists. The curators also bring with them two artists to demonstrate their craft daily throughout the 3-month exhibition.

We intend to expand our outreach to 4000 students this time. About 40% of these students are from low-income families and seldom have an opportunity to explore the arts and relate them to classroom learning. Our area schools are unable to pay for admission, therefore we provide free field trips for our Title 1 schools. At a student ticket price of $10, your support will allow us to reach 1000 students in our region.

Our director is a former elementary school principal and key staff and volunteers have education backgrounds. We don’t just tour children, we create standards-based, hands-on learning experiences tailored to each grade level. We even provide educational resources for teachers and administrators to learn about the exhibition and build background knowledge for their students. Two of our area elementary schools sent their entire schools to us the last time!

Our area is in a cultural desert and our young organization has proudly served as a cultural beacon by bringing in this and many other world-class exhibitions.

Project Description:

A $10,000 grant from your foundation will be fully allocated to cover the costs of SVA’s summer bridge program for our inaugural 6th and 7th grade cohorts in July 2025. This intensive two-week experience is critical for students’ successful transition into our unique school model and culture. Grant funds will enable us to:

Develop engaging, hands-on projects that introduce our STREAM and entrepreneurship focus
Train a team of veteran teachers to deliver bridge programming
Purchase supplies for bridge activities like design challenges, lab investigations, and art installations
Provide transportation and meals to maximize student participation
Host a culminating showcase where students present their innovative projects to the community

Through bridge, students will build bonds with teachers and peers, reducing back-to-school anxiety. Immersive preview projects ignite engagement and establish expectations. Project Title: A Can Can Make A Difference Food Distribution Program
Project Description:

We locate, pick up, sort and distribute perishable and non-perishable food items to the hungry. We do this through our 74 in kind donors. We have a 5000sqft warehouse, 2 refrigerated trucks, a forklift, and a walk-in refrigerator that provides us with this capacity. We have 1 full time and 1 part time employees, over 50 volunteers, and 78 community partners that collect and distribute the food in their neighbourhoods. We also partner with a drug rehab centre of a local hospital to provide warm meals, nonperishable snacks, and toiletries to 100-200 of their clients once a week. Our plan is to expand this service to a daily meal service pending funding for a vehicle. We provide a full Thanksgiving dinner to over 1000 Baltimore city residents each year who cannot afford a meal and/or have nowhere to go to at Thanksgiving. Last year we distributed over 260 turkeys to families who could not afford a turkey at Thanksgiving. We are currently serving over 64000 families each month with perishable and nonperishable food. All our services are free. Last year we distributed over one million pounds of food and over 6,000 pounds of nonfood aid items. Another critical function of our food distribution program is educating the recipients of the food on good nutrition habits and a varied fruit and vegetable diet. Many of the recipients of the food we distribute are in the Baltimore metropolitan area and do not have knowledge of various healthy food choices they have and we provide this along with the food we distribute. We are committed to reducing food wastage and to this end work with local restaurants to receive and distribute their food to people in need. After Hurricane Ian we sent 8 tractor trailer loads of food and aid to Florida.

Today’s Date: 4/16/2024
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Nurturing the Next Generation of Emotionally Intelligent Leaders
Project Description:

Prismatic is on a mission to activate leadership potential for young people living in low-income communities by infusing social and emotional skill-building into career development education. We offer two social-emotional learning programs for middle and high school students. Young Changemakers and IGNITE. Our programs are designed to empower students to explore who they are, define their passions and purpose, build resiliency, and discover how their unique qualities can make a valuable change in their communities and our world. Ultimately, Prismatic programs serve as a launchpad for success in any field, introducing students to a wide range of career paths and ensuring they have the skills and community support to advance, lead and pivot with resiliency no matter what life throws at them.

We draw inspiration from research that states, "Adolescent leaders are more likely to take up managerial positions as adults, and leadership skills developed early on can have a positive impact on future wages" (Kuhn, P. & Weinberger, C., 2005). Therefore, we aim to cultivate leaders, particularly those coming from Chicago’s low-income neighborhoods. By providing these students with the necessary support and resources, they have the potential to break the cycle of poverty and create a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities. If awarded this grant, we can develop a new generation of leaders who have the emotional intelligence skills to shape the future of our workforce.

A $10,000 grant will allow us to run a full-school year program impacting over 50 students from one Chicago school in a high-need community. We will use the grant funding to compensate personnel and contractors who make our programs possible at our partner school, including a partnership manager, program manager, curriculum designer, and instructional specialist.

In the past, the virtual program has impacted high school students residing in California, Washington, New York, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, and Illinois.
