Requested Amount: 10000

Project Title: $10000
Project Description:

Josh said “I’d never seen artists working before – it was so cool to see the shapes coming from the stone.  It’s amazing that someone could do that with their hands. I even talked to the artist – a man all the way from Africa!”  This is just one reaction from the 3000 students who have had the experience of visiting ZimSculpt at the Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Garden in 2022.

ZimSculpt, an exhibition of hand-carved stone is returning to Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens in February of 2025. Coming from Zimbabwe to North America just once a year, this exhibition features thousands of sculptures created by over 300 artists. The curators also bring with them two artists to demonstrate their craft daily throughout the 3-month exhibition.

We intend to expand our outreach to 4000 students this time. About 40% of these students are from low-income families and seldom have an opportunity to explore the arts and relate them to classroom learning. Our area schools are unable to pay for admission, therefore we provide free field trips for our Title 1 schools. At a student ticket price of $10, your support will allow us to reach 1000 students in our region.

Our director is a former elementary school principal and key staff and volunteers have education backgrounds. We don’t just tour children, we create standards-based, hands-on learning experiences tailored to each grade level. We even provide educational resources for teachers and administrators to learn about the exhibition and build background knowledge for their students. Two of our area elementary schools sent their entire schools to us the last time!

Our area is in a cultural desert and our young organization has proudly served as a cultural beacon by bringing in this and many other world-class exhibitions.
