Project Title: BEAR Necessities
Project Description:

BEAR Necessities, BEAR’s largest, year-round program, operates out of retail-like rooms and one central warehouse. Brand-new emergency resources, including clothing, shoes, diapers, formula, socks and underwear, hygiene items, blankets, toys, and more are provided to children during a critical time in their lives. BEAR Necessities also provides “Safe Sleeping” items like cots, cribs, and mattresses, as well as “Trustworthy Transport” items like car seats and harnesses. Many of these children have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect allegations where their basic needs are not being met. Due to BEAR expanding our mission to include “at-risk” children as well as those involved in CPS, we have been able to partner with more community organizations to expand our impact even more. The expansion and new partnerships have led to a huge increase in the number of requests over the last few years, which requires BEAR to be in constant need of new stock in all of our BEAR Rooms. During our last fiscal year running from October 2022 through September 2023, over 29,000 children were served through the BEAR Necessities program.

Project Title: Diaper Distribution Program
Project Description:

CNY Diaper Bank was founded in 2016 to provide free diapers to families through a network of partner agencies in Syracuse, NY and the surrounding region. We raise funds to purchase diapers in bulk which are then distributed monthly, 50/child, through various partner programs. Our diaper distribution serves low income families and is an essential resource in a community with one of the highest child poverty rates in the nation. Diapers are not covered by WIC or SNAP benefits and can cost more than $100/month for one child. Families forced to go without cannot bring their children to daycare, cannot attend work and are forced to choose between paying for diapers or paying for food and other essentials. Diaper need impacts children physically, emotionally and cognitively. CNYDB is a member of the National Diaper Bank Network and the Baby2Baby National Network. We are the largest diaper bank in NYS and have distributed over 9.6 million since 2016.

Project Title: Powering Up More Students in 2024
Project Description:

PowerUP Scholarship Fund, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is dedicated to empowering disadvantaged and special needs children through martial arts mentorship. Since 2017, our mission has been to instill core values of self-control, resilience, and respect while offering comprehensive after-school programs that foster personal growth and academic success.

Our innovative approach involves recruiting independent business owners, known as senseis, to provide mentorship and martial arts instruction directly to students in partnership with schools, afterschool programs, and community centers. By embedding senseis in their communities, we offer more than just martial arts classes – we provide positive role models who teach life skills and foster personal development.

With a proven track record of success, having served over 1,000 students and aiming to reach 1,300 scholars by 2024, PowerUP prioritizes academic performance and emotional well-being. We track outcomes through surveys and academic reports and have developed a "Strengths and Difficulties" questionnaire with the University of California Riverside to scientifically measure students’ growth in self-regulation.

One vital aspect of our work is our partnerships with local organizations, including underfunded schools and afterschool programs. Recently recommended to a Boys and Girls Club after a sports program cancellation due to an altercation, PowerUP offers a positive alternative, teaching discipline and respect in a safe environment.

In 2024, PowerUP is expanding nationally, starting with satellite classes in Austin, TX. With our flexible model and dedication to youth development, we aim to make an immediate impact on underserved communities across the United States.

We seek a $5,000 grant to support our national expansion initiative, enabling us to scale our proven martial arts mentorship program and extend our reach to underserved communities nationwide.

PowerUP is in strong financial standing, with reserves through 2024 and 100% board participation in giving, reflecting our commitment to our mission and the communities we serve.

At PowerUP Scholarship Fund, our mission is clear: to help kids thrive through martial arts mentorship. With your support, we can provide underserved youth with the tools they need to succeed academically and personally, empowering the next generation of leaders. Together, let’s make a lasting impact and help kids thrive in every aspect of their lives.

Project Title: Art for All
Project Description:

Our "Art for All" initiative allows our organization to support underserved/transient youth in Charlotte. On several occasions, we plan to provide Charlotte’s underserved/transient youth with arts education starter kits in an effort to spark or revive creativity. The starter kits provide hands-on experiences for youth to express themselves in ways they have not been able to in a long time, if ever. The ultimate hope is for youth to find, or hone, their craft during a time when more creativity is needed in the world. The funds will be used to create arts education kits for youth and to facilitate arts expression workshops. These workshops combine art activities with social emotional learning, providing an avenue for marginalized youth to express themselves in productive ways. A vast majority of the funds will specifically be dedicated to purchasing items to go into the kits. Items include, but are not limited to writing notebooks, writing utensils, enrichment books, sketch pads, paint, canvas, paint brushes, etc. Youth will have the opportunity to choose which kits inspire them. In conjunction with the distribution of kits, youth will have the opportunity to participate in mini arts expressions workshops in which they will utilize their kits and explore their art of choice using other resources. Following these workshops, there will be time for youth to build community through art, discussion and sharing a meal.

Today’s Date: March 6, 2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Clarke Schools Listening and Spoken Language Services
Project Description:

In the United States today, hearing loss in children is a low-incidence disability affecting approximately 4,000 (or 3 in every 1,000) newborns. With access to sound through cochlear implants—or highly powerful hearing aids and other assistive devices—children born with hearing loss today can access sound earlier than ever before. But because these devices do not fully replicate natural hearing, children who are deaf or hard of hearing are in urgent need of specialized early intervention services to rehabilitate the auditory and linguistic system in the brain, and thereby mitigate the considerable risk of listening, language and speech delays. Clarke’s role is to equip children with the tools and skills to access sound and language in their earliest years, when the brain is most malleable, and to also support children and their families from early childhood through their high school years, as needed, in mainstream settings.

Your grant will support Clarke’s Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) services, which annually reach more than 1,000 children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. LSL is an approach by which children with hearing loss, guided by skilled professionals, learn to access sound using hearing assistive technology (such as aids or cochlear implants) to develop spoken language. In partnership with parents and other caregivers, Clarke’s specially trained, interdisciplinary team of teachers of the deaf, speech-language pathologists and audiologists work together to identify developmental capacity and prepare children to transition successfully to a mainstream school when they complete our programs—usually by or before kindergarten.

If children who are deaf or hard of hearing receive LSL intervention services early and often, it then becomes certain that no barriers—academic, social or professional—will stand in their way. We hope you’ll join us in ensuring a future for Clarke children filled with limitless possibilities.
