Project Title: Mentoring Program in High Schools in Compton, CA
Project Description:

This mentoring program will start in September 2024 and conclude in June 2025. It will be conducted at three high schools in Compton, California: Compton High School, Dominguez High School and Centennial High School. Approximately, 130 students will be mentored. Through our mentoring program, the participants will be provided with mentors who will encourage them and challenge them to excel in their academics and character. As a result, the participating students will be led into making positive decisions that will lead to a better outcome for their lives: graduating high school (95% graduation rate), continuing their education after high school, securing career jobs and becoming contributing citizens in society.

Adult mentors and peer mentors (older students who are excelling in their academics and character) will be trained to mentor the mentees in small groups. Mentoring sessions will be held once a week at each high school. The mentors will have transformative conversations with their mentees (guided by the Elevate Your G.A.M.E. curriculum and the Elevate Your G.A.M.E. program coordinator). In the mentoring conversations, the students will discover something about themselves, something new or something that they need to change, and they will be affirmed and encouraged by their mentors. Topics discussed will include: educational achievement, respect, perseverance, integrity, responsible behavior, conflict resolution, time management, and leadership. In addition, mentors will help students to develop career goals.

Elevate Your G.A.M.E.’s on-site program coordinators provide consistent leadership in facilitating each mentoring session by introducing the discussion topic each week and providing the mentors with materials and conversation sheets that help them have transformative conversations with their mentees. As a result, mentors and mentees are guided through a quality mentoring experience every week.

They are victims of trauma including domestic violence, poverty, drug abuse, mental illness & incarceration of family members, their daily lives reflect their pain. To meet the challenge of enabling these at-risk youth to turn their lives around, Elk Hill has developed a suite of specialized services that help to alleviate the effects of children’s unfortunate roots. In addition to traditional counseling and group therapy, social skills classes, and equine therapy, Elk Hill has developed a strong eco-therapy program focusing on the natural healing benefits of being outdoors. Many of the children we serve are living in dangerous, urban areas. We hope to expand their horizons by taking them to local parks where they can swim, fish, play, and learn the appropriate social and behavior skills that will help them in daily life. Our program includes spring break and summer camps, excursions on the James River and hikes in the Shenandoah National Park. Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire young people to own their future success. We envision a world where young people have the skill set and mindset to build thriving communities. We bring a different approach to education that uses innovation and contextual learning in partnership with educators, employers, and the community at large. In the end our promise is to provide learning experiences that help young people reach their potential. In other words, our name is our promise.

Through engaging, experiential lessons and volunteer interactions, JA programs help students see the relevance of what they are learning in the classroom and its application to the real world, acquire or enhance the skills they need to be successful in the workforce or postsecondary institutions, and recognize the value of an education. This knowledge helps students learn to manage their finances, understand basic economic concepts, explore careers, and develop in-demand job skills. Consequently, as adults, they will be more prepared to enter the workforce, make informed financial decisions, and contribute to the success of their local economy.

JA programs are offered at no cost to schools. Programs include: JA Fundamentals (PreK- grade 5) volunteer-led, age-appropriate classroom lessons on personal finance, civics, careers, and economics. JA Biztown (grades 5-6) combines classroom learning with a day-long visit to our BizTown facility where students assume the roles of workers and consumers in a simulated town. YES! (Your Economic Success!) (grades 6-8) career exploration and lessons on financial responsibility. STEM Summit (grades 9-10) offers a variety of hands-on STEM activities and exploration of STEM related careers. Today’s Date: 3-13-2024
Requested Amount: $2,250

Project Title: Equine Program for Alternative High School Students
Project Description:

Once the alternative high school students saw the mini horses, they smiled, had a few giggles, and started talking, no longer hiding behind hoodies or long hair. Minutes earlier, they had resisted participating in the mental health session, knowing the topic was grief. However, after learning about the therapy horses and being asked to consider how people work through grief, the students analyzed available props, worked together, and created an obstacle course for the horses. While they led the horses through the course, they opened up to staff, each other, and the animals to talk about grief, exploring the topic, gaining insight from each other, and actively problem-solving how to work through it.

Wyo Hoofbeats in Park County, Wyoming offers a unique therapeutic modality called Equine Assisted Learning; we facilitate learning experiences where clients develop life skills through hands-on activities with therapy horses. As with the example above with students from Heart Mountain Academy, an alternative high school in Cody, Wyoming, equine assisted learning can reach people when there is resistance to more traditional “talk” therapy.

Our mission is to provide equine assisted learning by connecting people with horses to create an experience that enriches an individual’s mind, body, and spirit. To accomplish it, we focus on three main goals: 1) decrease barriers to people receiving counseling services; 2) provide opportunities for clients to develop new skills; and 3) offer connection, socialization, and hands-on activities with therapy animals that all promote mental health without participants knowing they are doing therapy.

We ask for your support of $2,250 to help us convert our annual visit to Heart Mountain Academy to a monthly visit, where we work more often with at-risk teens at an alternative high school in 2025, offering nine sessions with them.

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: StationSoccer
Project Description:

Kids playing soccer. It seems so simple – right? Unfortunately, not here in Atlanta – where opportunity is too often determined by zip code. Soccer in the Streets works to break down barriers and provide access to the beautiful game for those who would otherwise not have the means to play. StationSoccer is Soccer in the Streets’ award-winning response to the youth transportation issue. The project reclaims unused public land at MARTA stations across the city – outfitting these previously neglected areas with two mini soccer fields that anchor our sport-based youth development projects. Founded by a partnership between Soccer in the Streets, MARTA, the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta United Foundation, the network of 6 Stations (with a total of 10 completed by 2026) will provide access to 2,000 youth in underserved communities.

But we are much more than a traditional soccer club serving non-traditional players in non-traditional locations. We intentionally use evidence-based methods to create an environment that builds not only the physical health and soccer abilities of our players but also their social, emotional and mental well-being. Many of our players suffer from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Providing positive childhood experiences (PCEs) and building social and emotional learning capacities are proven ways to mitigate the harmful effects of ACEs.

Our StationSoccer project provides a critical pathway for local youth to access these benefits of sport. We are requesting $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation to support our programming at StationSoccer locations. Specifically, funds will be used to provide coaches – the trusted adults who make the SEL building process work and set youth up for a brighter future.

Today’s Date: March 13, 2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Marian Center School for Disabilities 2025-2026 School Year
Project Description:

We respectfully request a grant from the Hermanowski Foundation to serve up to 50 students with mild to moderate developmental disabilities, ages 6-21, at Marian Center School (MCS) during the 2025-2026 school year.

Located in the ninth-poorest ZIP code in all of Miami-Dade (33054), MCS provides highly qualified, individualized instruction and support for students with special needs, at no or little cost to low- to moderate-income families. Providing accessible services is critical for the community we serve; according to the 2019 United Way Miami ALICE Report, 71% of children with disabilities in Miami-Dade under ages 0-17 live in households that are below the cost-of-living threshold.

MCS is fully accredited by the Florida Catholic Conference as a Special School, and provides students with individualized, highly specialized education plans designed to support their academic, self care, social, and pre-vocational skill development and success. We have certified, experienced special education teachers in each classroom, with one specially-trained teacher assistant per class. There is a maximum of 12 students per classroom, and classes are held from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, weekdays from August through June.

Our specialized education plans are unique to each student, based on our Curriculum and Assessment Guide. The Guide is the result of professional research and application on students with diverse ability and intellectual disability, and consists of a series of educational goals and objectives that form each student’s Individual Learning Plan. Classes are ungraded, allowing students to progress at their own unique pace.

During their enrollment at MCS, students receive attention, care, and love for their individual needs and abilities. As a result, students consistently demonstrate mastery of skills and retention of knowledge appropriate for their level of intellectual ability, which leads them to develop self worth and self-reliance to ultimately lead fruitful and productive lives.

Total Project Budget: $566,775

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): For the 2025-2026 school year, 80% of school revenue will be generated from the State of Florida through Family Empowerment Scholarship For Unique Abilities. This has historically been the case and we have every indication it will continue. We anticipate that 13% of revenue will come from family contributions (pending). We are working to raise the remaining 7% through grants from community partners like the Hermanowski Foundation. Though Marian Center is a subordinate of the Archdiocese of Miami, we serve all faiths and are an independent organization, receiving no financial support from the church. In fact, this is our first intentional fundraising effort in 60 years. This year, we have secured grants from The Peacock Foundation ($20,000), The Batchelor Foundation ($15,000), and The Pulte Family Charitable Foundation ($15,000). We anticipate renewing these grants in 2025. Additional funding is currently pending from GEO Group ($20,000), the Leslie L. Alexander Foundation ($20,000), and Albert & Birdie Einstein Fund ($15,000). We are at the beginning of our intentional fundraising efforts and are working to secure more grant support for our school program. We hope to soon count the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation among our education partners.

Project Duration: MCS’s 2025-2026 school year will run from August 2025 through June 2026; however, funding from Hermanowski Foundation, if awarded, will be completely used between July 1 (in preparation for the upcoming school year) and December 31, 2025.

Project Title: Tools to Support Children and Teens in Crisis
Project Description:

Youth Haven seeks support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation for tools that provide Home, Hope, & Healing to abused, neglected and homeless children and teens ages 6-20.

Licensed by the Florida Department of Children’s Services and the Children’s Network of Southwest Florida, Youth Haven is the sole emergency shelter in Southwest Florida providing immediate care to at-risk youth aged 6 to 18. Youth Haven also offers extended residence, with an average stay of 270 days. The Homeless Teen Transitional Living Program is the only program in Collier County for youth experiencing homelessness. Residents receive individual service plans and life skills classes that promote independence and housing readiness. Rob’s Group Home, Youth Haven’s Transitional Living Cottage, offers comprehensive 24-hour care for homeless unaccompanied youth ages 16 to 20 who require a longer length of stay.

While government funding provides the bare minimum for each client supported, over the past two years, Youth Haven has dramatically expanded programs and services to respond to the increase in the severity of trauma and mental health issues suffered by the youth arriving for help. Foster care youth are at a higher risk of experiencing many Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) like abuse and violence, leading to toxic stress and long-term problems. Youth Haven residents report experiencing an average of 7.2 out of 10 possible ACEs. 50% experienced eight or more and 97% four or more. Youth Haven utilizes tools like the Children’s Functional Assessment Rating Scale, Related Life Events Screener and Child PTSD Symptom Scale to measure their progress.

Youth Haven residents receive comprehensive care and counseling to aid their healing in a therapeutic environment. Programs include therapies, education, activities and life skills provided on an 18.5-acre trauma-informed campus to prepare them for a healthy, self-sufficient future.

Project Title: Promoting literacy levels for at-risk children with learning disabilities.
Project Description:

Project mission
This project aims to promote literacy levels amongst students from economically poor backgrounds with learning disabilities (i.e. students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, central auditory processing disorder, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and ADD).

Expected outcomes:
i. Improved literacy levels in language and math.
ii. Improved self-esteem, self-confidence, and social skills.
iii. Improved parent’s participation in supporting their children’s early literacy and learning needs

Brief description of the project
Studies show that learning disabilities affect 20% of the US population (1 in 5), while in Louisiana,13% have been diagnosed with a learning disability.
Though students with learning disabilities are as smart as their peers and can achieve a high level with the right support, too often, they lack specialized support , and leave school with a certificate of completion, instead of a regular diploma, or drop out out altogether.
Additionally, between 24% and 52% of children with learning disabilities also exhibit signs of behavior problems that may affect their performance. Though interested in learning, they struggle to behave appropriately when placed in a reading group with peers, throw tantrums when they become frustrated with reading or solving academic problems, skip school frequently, or drop out to avoid the challenges they face in school.
To further its mission of promoting education, one of ACOH’s programs focuses on empowering students with learning disabilities through literacy support and mentoring to improve their skills in reading and math, and social skills.
We are therefore seeking funding to meet the cost of program supplies.

Beneficiaries
The direct beneficiaries of this program are 22 students with learning disabilities from Kenner, LA (Grades 4-6). These pupils are from Title 1 public schools in poor neighborhoods recommended by their teachers and parents.
