Project Title: StationSoccer
Project Description:
Kids playing soccer. It seems so simple – right? Unfortunately, not here in Atlanta – where opportunity is too often determined by zip code. Soccer in the Streets works to break down barriers and provide access to the beautiful game for those who would otherwise not have the means to play. StationSoccer is Soccer in the Streets’ award-winning response to the youth transportation issue. The project reclaims unused public land at MARTA stations across the city – outfitting these previously neglected areas with two mini soccer fields that anchor our sport-based youth development projects. Founded by a partnership between Soccer in the Streets, MARTA, the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta United Foundation, the network of 6 Stations (with a total of 10 completed by 2026) will provide access to 2,000 youth in underserved communities.
But we are much more than a traditional soccer club serving non-traditional players in non-traditional locations. We intentionally use evidence-based methods to create an environment that builds not only the physical health and soccer abilities of our players but also their social, emotional and mental well-being. Many of our players suffer from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Providing positive childhood experiences (PCEs) and building social and emotional learning capacities are proven ways to mitigate the harmful effects of ACEs.
Our StationSoccer project provides a critical pathway for local youth to access these benefits of sport. We are requesting $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation to support our programming at StationSoccer locations. Specifically, funds will be used to provide coaches – the trusted adults who make the SEL building process work and set youth up for a brighter future.
