Project Title: Expanding Youth Mental Health Services to the Outdoors
Project Description:

Children come to Elk Hill because they are struggling emotionally & behaviorally and may be failing academically. They are victims of trauma including domestic violence, poverty, drug abuse, mental illness & incarceration of family members, their daily lives reflect their pain. To meet the challenge of enabling these at-risk youth to turn their lives around, Elk Hill has developed a suite of specialized services that help to alleviate the effects of children’s unfortunate roots. In addition to traditional counseling and group therapy, social skills classes, and equine therapy, Elk Hill has developed a strong eco-therapy program focusing on the natural healing benefits of being outdoors. Many of the children we serve are living in dangerous, urban areas. We hope to expand their horizons by taking them to local parks where they can swim, fish, play, and learn the appropriate social and behavior skills that will help them in daily life. Our program includes spring break and summer camps, excursions on the James River and hikes in the Shenandoah National Park. Low staff to child ratios enable us to learn about each child and help them discover the underlying issues impacting their behavior and/or mental health.
