Project Title: Educational Enhancements: Storytime and STEM
Project Description:
The Galesburg Public Library addresses existing disparities by providing quality, affordable services that meet the needs of all Galesburg area residents including:
• Programs for children of all ages to discover and explore new worlds and build the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in school and in life.
• Access to digital and information technology for those residents who would not otherwise have these opportunities.
• Opportunities for adults to access information, work together, discuss and share ideas, and build skills to reach their full potential.
2,300 of the library’s 13,000 cardholders are children. The library would to enhance educational services offered to children of all ages with the addition of Storytime Kits and Robotics and Coding Activities.
Storytime Kits will focus on ten topics specifically selected by librarians to help children develop the literacy skills and competencies they need to be successful in school. Caregivers and educators will be able to check out the Storytime Kits which will contain all the materials needed for a productive story-time session. Each kit will include several books; an outline with related songs, rhymes, and activities; materials for two to three hands-on activities; and information on helping children build early literacy skills.
The library would also like to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) offerings for children, ages kindergarten through high school, with robotics and coding activities. Ozobot makes award-winning robots that give all children the opportunity to create with technology. The Ozobot Evo Classroom kit is an all-in-one, reusable STEM kit with robotics and coding activities and lessons. The Ozobot kit would enable the library to provide the highest quality, research-backed technology education that children can’t access anywhere else – helping them develop the skills necessary for the 21st century workforce and future success in STEM careers.
