Project Title: Wolf Trap Initiative
Project Description:

Arts for Learning, Virginia became in 2023 the exclusive Coastal Virginia affiliate of the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts, the educational arm of the Wolf Trap Foundation for Performing Arts in Vienna, VA. This is an expansion of our service model to focus upon the youngest learners in underserved schools because of the alarming need to better prepare students. The Virginia Department of Education reports that 40% of Virginia’s kindergarteners began the 2022-23 school year lacking adequate skills in literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills.

The Wolf Trap (WT) model is unique because it focuses on the arts, using music, dance, storytelling, and theater to improve students’ literacy skills. Professional teaching artists on our roster are trained and credentialed in future-focused instructional techniques, developmentally appropriate early childhood standards, and engaging arts-integration strategies that reinforce targeted literacy skills. The model includes in-person classroom residencies, professional development, and family workshops. Independent research shows the WT approach results in higher standardized test scores, increased language development, and enhanced 21st-century skills.

This grant will serve Coastal Virginia’s youngest citizens by funding five high-quality five-session classroom residencies for preschool students and a two-hour professional development workshop led by WT artists open to any interested preschool educators. In the residencies, A4L teaching artists work in the classroom alongside teachers to engage students in arts-based learning experiences, slowly allowing the teacher to lead the lesson using these strategies. The teacher chooses the topic, and the artist builds the curriculum plan. After the residency, the teacher will have acquired skills to apply to current and future classes to further the success of their young students. Altogether, the Hermanowski Family Foundation is asked to fund 20% of the $24,895 total budget for the initiative.

Project Title: Empowering Low-Income Minority Children through the Oasis After-School Academy
Project Description:

The Oasis After-School Academy, now in its 25th year, provides academic and socio-emotional support to 130 low-income, minority children at risk of school failure in grades K-7 in Paterson, one of the poorest and most diverse cities in New Jersey. The majority of Paterson’s schoolchildren fail to meet grade-level expectations in math and language arts, thus lacking basic literacy skills, and many suffer from adverse childhood experiences that result in anxiety, depression, and difficult classroom behaviors. The Oasis After-School Academy provides an early intervention outlet to the children of Paterson, giving them access to a dedicated staff of professionals who support and nurture them as well as a safe and structured educational environment focused on improving literacy in math and language arts. The program operates every day after school from 3:30-6:00 pm during the school year, from September through mid-June, and participating children and their families have access to all free programs and services Oasis provides, including daily hot breakfast and lunch, emergency food bags and clothing, and the support of a full-time social work team of four. The Oasis After-School Academy provides the academic and emotional support system Paterson’s disadvantaged children lack and empowers them to thrive in school and in life. We create more equitable educational and future career pathways for low-income children who then become positive educational role models for the children in the broader community.

Project Title: Warm Hands & Warm Soles
Project Description:

At OSPREY Camp, we offer a transformative one-week outdoor education adventure to 5th and 6th graders in Washington State. Our program immerses students in the wonders of the Puget Sound watershed, guiding them to identify native plants and animal tracks. However, the children we serve face significant challenges. Our students come from Title 1 schools and live well below the poverty line, with some even experiencing homelessness, residing in shelters or their family’s car.
Heartbreakingly, upon arrival at OSPREY Camp, many children lack the necessities to stay warm. Ill-prepared and without proper clothing, they face discomfort and uncertainty during their camp experience. But at OSPREY Camp, we refuse to let them endure this hardship alone. Our compassionate staff bridges the gap, ensuring every child without a coat, gloves, or warm socks receives them upon arrival. It’s not just about providing warmth; it’s about showing these children they are seen, valued, and cared for.
By the end of their time at OSPREY Camp, these young participants take home cherished memories and the tangible warmth of a coat, gloves, and socks. It’s a small gesture with a profound impact, instilling a sense of dignity and belonging in children who may otherwise feel forgotten. Join us in ensuring that every child’s journey at OSPREY Camp is filled with comfort, warmth, and the unwavering support they deserve.
Each school year, we serve approximately 2,500 students, and more than 75% arrive without proper attire.

Children from households with low incomes, and who have parents with low levels of formal education encounter barriers to graduating high school, enrolling in postsecondary education or job training, and completing college, making it likely that they will struggle to secure stable employment and attain financial security. Champions For Learning’s Student Programs are divided into two distinct but complementary spheres: ‘college and career access’ and ‘occupation-based learning and skill-building’ and are designed to equip and prepare students for their future learning and career goals. Eighty-nine percent of the students we serve come from households living at or below the national poverty line. Our Student Programs support students working towards high school graduation and postsecondary education or technical training, equipping them with the tools necessary for continued academic, career, and overall life success. Our Take Stock in Children program emphasizes mentoring to guide students towards successful completion of high school and enrollment in college. The College and Career Preparation Program prepares 11th and 12th grade students for their future learning and career goals post high school graduation. Through the Technical Pathways program, students receive guidance on how to navigate the academic, technical, and real-world knowledge, skills and experience they need to be prepared for a career. Collier County Public Schools’ High School Entrepreneurship Program offers project-based, authentic learning in a real-world environment. Champions For Learning recruits and trains volunteers, who work with students to develop the spirit of an entrepreneur.
