Project Title: Distance Education
Project Description:

As the largest restored gospel-based live and online home education program for K-12 students, Liahona takes its mission to help parents educate the youth of Zion seriously. Each year, hundreds of students across the globe take advantage of this inspiring program.

Distance Education allows students to study at their own pace at home, and with teacher involvement.

Classes are filmed daily at the Academy. Sessions may be watched live with interaction from the teacher or recorded and watched at the student’s convenience. Students in the classroom can also access the recorded lecture at any time. All classes are viewed online through a secure website and may be viewed as many times as desired while the student is enrolled in the class.

Liahona offers a fully accredited education track through Cognia (formerly AdvancEd), the largest accrediting agency in the country, and provides options for both daily school attendance and live classes from the comfort of home. The well-trained and motivated teachers strive to provide a classical academic base for every student, instilling in them the love of learning and inspiring patriotism. Parents decide which grade best suits their student’s age and skill level. Classes and homework are designed so that parents oversee all aspects of their student’s education. Liahona consists of an elementary school (preschool through fourth grade) and the Academy for grades five through twelve.

Liahona’s distance education program provides students around the world a sense of community, to strengthen and bless them wherever they live. Each year, Liahona sponsors youth conferences, trips, and prom, with many students in the distance education program participating. Students also connect through interactive social media and a secure yet connective texting system. Deep and lasting friendships are developed among students, and all share in the rich diversity of families from all around the world.

Project Title: Transformative Mentoring and Summer Experiences for Philadelphian Youth
Project Description:

Summer Search Philadelphia, a branch of the national organization Summer Search, seeks to create greater equity and expand academic, professional, and financial pathways available to BIPOC students and low-income communities. Our mission is to unleash students’ potential through depth-mentoring and transformative summer experiences.

We partner with students from systemically marginalized communities, who are deeply impacted by an inequitable education system that has failed to serve them. In Philadelphia, our students live in households with an average median income of $28,000, 94% of them qualify for free lunch, 98% are BIPOC, and 78% are the first in their families to attend college.

The proposed initiative will serve 150 high school students by:

– Providing in-depth mentoring to cultivate social-emotional learning, adolescent development, identity exploration, and trauma sensitivity.
– Offering full scholarships to summer programs to sophomores and juniors, designed to enhance socio-emotional skills and bridge the gap in learning and enrichment opportunities associated with income disparities.

Our engagement with students begins in their sophomore year and extends for seven to nine years, encompassing year-round individual and group mentoring, immersive summer learning experiences, guidance on post-secondary education and financial aid, as well as professional development coaching. By supporting this project, the Hermanowski Foundation would directly contribute to dismantling barriers that hinder the academic and professional advancement of BIPOC and low-income youth in Philadelphia.

Project Title: Project LEAP
Project Description:

Our Early Childhood Education (ECE) program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and holds an Excelerate Gold Circle of Quality, which recognizes programs that demonstrate quality in fifteen standards, validated by a state-approved assessor. Gold Circle programs meet or exceed specific quality benchmarks on learning environment, instructional quality, and all program administrative standards; group size and staff/child ratios; staff qualifications; and professional development. Our robust Nationally Recognized Curriculum of Excellence, Creative Curriculum, is used alongside GOLD, a research-based formative assessment that is aligned to the Illinois early learning state standards, which together support our students in language, literacy, social-emotional skills, and physical development. ECE staff set goals for children to prepare them for academic success in kindergarten and beyond. Our program provides full-day programming year-round for children ages two to five and a home visit program for children from birth to age three. Currently, our program serves 72 children.

Project LEAP (Literacy Empowerment Access Project), a core ECE program, is a parent-school collaboration that increases equity in children’s early literacy outcomes. Founded by Northwestern University’s Child Language Lab and supported by IMC Charitable Foundation, activities of this project include: expanding the “I Can See Myself” Lending Library’s collection to include age appropriate books in Spanish and English/Spanish representing Black and Latinx cultures and stories; continuing our Parent Fellowship program to support parents as early literacy ambassadors; hosting Connection Meetings, where teachers and families develop a plan for early literacy; and engaging male role models and parents in their child’s journey to literacy.
