Project Title: Transformative Mentoring and Summer Experiences for Philadelphian Youth
Project Description:
Summer Search Philadelphia, a branch of the national organization Summer Search, seeks to create greater equity and expand academic, professional, and financial pathways available to BIPOC students and low-income communities. Our mission is to unleash students’ potential through depth-mentoring and transformative summer experiences.
We partner with students from systemically marginalized communities, who are deeply impacted by an inequitable education system that has failed to serve them. In Philadelphia, our students live in households with an average median income of $28,000, 94% of them qualify for free lunch, 98% are BIPOC, and 78% are the first in their families to attend college.
The proposed initiative will serve 150 high school students by:
– Providing in-depth mentoring to cultivate social-emotional learning, adolescent development, identity exploration, and trauma sensitivity.
– Offering full scholarships to summer programs to sophomores and juniors, designed to enhance socio-emotional skills and bridge the gap in learning and enrichment opportunities associated with income disparities.
Our engagement with students begins in their sophomore year and extends for seven to nine years, encompassing year-round individual and group mentoring, immersive summer learning experiences, guidance on post-secondary education and financial aid, as well as professional development coaching. By supporting this project, the Hermanowski Foundation would directly contribute to dismantling barriers that hinder the academic and professional advancement of BIPOC and low-income youth in Philadelphia.
