Project Title: PowerUP Expansion 2024
Project Description:

PowerUP Scholarship Fund, established in 2017, is committed to empowering disadvantaged and special needs youth through martial arts mentorship, emphasizing self-regulation, resilience, and respect. Collaborating with independent business owners (senseis) and organizations, PowerUP delivers martial arts classes directly to underserved students, providing vital mentoring and support alongside physical training. Instructors are compensated based on student attendance, fostering community engagement and economic empowerment. With a goal of reaching 1,300 scholars by year-end, PowerUP prioritizes personalized instructor-student matches and carefully tracks academic and social-emotional progress.

At PowerUP, our focus extends beyond merely offering martial arts classes to underserved youth. We strive to be more than just a program; we are dedicated mentors and advocates for our students. Through our initiatives, we not only provide opportunities for youth who would otherwise lack access to such classes but also serve as positive role models, offering guidance, support, and encouragement. Our organization is committed to consistently looking out for our students, providing resources, mentorship, and a nurturing environment where they can thrive. By fostering a sense of community and empowerment, we empower our students to reach their full potential both inside and outside the dojo.

To pioneer our mission, we’re requesting a $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to pilot a martial arts program in Austin, TX, benefiting up to 20 students in 2024. Our innovative approach eliminates overhead and equipment costs, focusing solely on recruiting an experienced sensei committed to mentorship and community engagement. Funds will exclusively support instructor compensation, ensuring top-quality instruction without additional financial burdens. Moreover, resources will be allocated to marketing efforts to attract students from local communities, schools, and centers. A portion of the grant will also be reserved for scholarships or financial aid, guaranteeing accessibility for all students. With this streamlined strategy, we aim to launch a successful pilot program, empowering Austin’s youth through martial arts mentorship and fostering personal growth without unnecessary expenses.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Pick Along! Summer Camps
Project Description:

One of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum’s core educational programs is our yearly “Pick Along! Summer Camp” program. The mission of this camp is to foster traditional music education for youth. The camp offers a unique educational experience and draws students from the local region and beyond. Campers primarily learn banjo, acoustic guitar, or fiddle and are taught by experienced musicians, teachers, and special instructors. We hope to add a ukulele program and were recently awarded funding to purchase ukuleles, but operating the full program is dependent on additional funding to support a ukulele instructor.

Camps take place inside the Birthplace of Country Music Museum which helps immerse students in the history of traditional music. The museum describes the roots and branches of old-time, country, and bluegrass music in-depth. We offer two summer camp sessions for youth musicians aged 8-16: a beginner level camp and an intermediate level camp. The beginner camps are designed for everyone, and no musical experience is necessary to attend them. The intermediate camps are designed for campers who have either attended camp before or who already play music.

Our camps provide an enduring relationship with music for years after the conclusion of the program. We have seen many campers continue their musical education by taking private lessons, participating in our monthly jam sessions, and performing on stage. We have even had previous campers return as primary instructors and camp counselors to assist with activities and develop leadership skills.

The total costs of the Pick Along! Summer Camp program for two camp weeks averages $11,000. Adding a ukulele camp would increase the total camp budget to $15,500. Camp fee revenues from registrations cover just over one-third of our expenses (approx. $5,000). Each year BCM works to begin securing grant funding through Spring.

Project Title: Take Charge! Medically-Based Parenting
Project Description:

Preventable family and environmental factors account for 43% of all events leading to a hospital admission for a child with medical complexity, say researchers.

Family and environmental factors, such as substandard housing, lack of transportation, and social isolation, are also leading causes of medical neglect in this population. The high rates of single parents, poverty, and unemployment are a direct consequence of the preventable family and environmental factors as well.

Children with medical complexity and developmental disabilities often end up in foster care for no other reason than their parents lacking training or access to the resources needed to manage their child’s care successfully. Based upon case reviews of our foster care program for children deemed medically-fragile, we estimate that from 35% to 40% of the children with medical complexity we serve could have stayed with their biological families. This fact led us to create our “Take Charge! Medically-Based Parenting” early intervention model.

“Take Charge! Medically-Based Parenting” focuses on four areas that parents and other family members of children with medical complexity can master and thus maintain a stable and nurturing household in which all can thrive.
In partnership with parents, Childkind addresses the social and environmental barriers these families face and guide them to success in each of the four domains of the model: 1) Child Bonding – nurturing attachment when typical means of communication are impeded by physical disabilities; 2) Parenting Sustainability – building or strengthening the parents’ ongoing personal support network; 3) Child Wellbeing – teaching parents to manage their child’s complex regimen of care successfully; and 4) Family Sustainability – helping parents taking charge of their exceedingly difficult circumstances and learning to become their own case managers and care coordinators.

Independent evaluations of the model attest to its success at keeping these families together.

Project Title: Youth Leadership/Mentorship Program
Project Description:

CCC’s Youth Leadership/Mentorship Program (YLMP) enables high school students from Asian immigrant families to gain self-confidence, leadership skills, and an understanding of the value they can provide to others. The students participate in leadership skills training and then mentor and support English Language Learner 4th – 5th graders.
The mentors, by being positive role models, encourage mentees to share and discuss concerns and aspirations important to them. Mentors and mentees develop compassion and learn social responsibility, collaboration, and public speaking skills.
This program is offered to Malden High School and Malden Catholic High students, with training for mentors in the fall. ELL students at local elementary schools participate between January and May.
YLMP creates significant results. Teen leaders report increased confidence and a boost in the sense of self-worth that grows from impacting others. They move from not feeling entirely a part of the culture of their families OR that of American students, to an understanding of how the American educational system works, their place in it, and opportunities for helping others navigate it successfully. Working together, mentors can better withstand both academic pressures and the negative impacts of anti-Asian sentiment in the wider culture. They use their voice to better themselves, their community, and their mentees.
Mentees benefit from having an older student mentor who walks a similar life journey and understands their challenges and opportunities. They see possibilities that they, too, can become leaders, develop strength and confidence, and succeed.

Project Title: A Creative Journey Camp
Project Description:

Volunteers for Youth Justice is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide a community caring for children, youth, and families in crisis. Our organization recognizes the transformative power of mentorship and leadership programs aiming to redirect youth towards purposeful and positive living. To further our mission, we are excited to present our proposal for funding support from the Hermanowski Foundation to support our art camp.

The Creative Journey Camp is an immersive experience aimed at introducing middle and high school students to the world of art, design, and creative expression. Through hands-on workshops and interactive sessions, participants will have the opportunity to explore various artistic disciplines under the mentorship of seasoned professionals in public arts, musical arts, and performing arts. Students will not only work closely with these creatives to gain skill, insight, and personal experience but also gain personal growth to discover and unlock their creative potential.

The objective of this proposal is to provide meaningful access to the Creative Journey Camp for marginalized and disadvantaged youth in our community, giving them a chance to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery through the arts. With the generous support of the Hermanowski Foundation, VYJ seeks to offer full student scholarships to 50 deserving individuals who may not otherwise have the means to participate in such an enriching program. These scholarships will cover essential expenses including art supplies, lessons, as well as daily snacks and lunch, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their ability to engage with the arts and unlock their creative potential.

The partnership between VYJ and the Hermanowski Foundation holds the promise of empowering marginalized youth with the tools and opportunities they need to flourish by nurturing individual artistic growth while also cultivating a generation of young leaders who will contribute positively to their communities.

Project Title: Better Families
Project Description:

Better Together’s mission is to reduce the number of kids entering government foster care by providing comprehensive support and services to vulnerable families in need, promoting stability, well-being, and family preservation. Rather than being placed in the foster care system, Better Families works with parents in crisis to provide an alternative solution, tailored to their unique needs. Children are cared for by screened, background checked and trained volunteer host families. This unique approach provides stability during tumultuous times by allowing children to remain in their schools and activities, stay connected with their parents, and ultimately minimizes disruptions in their lives. The program operates on a preventative model, tackling the root causes of child neglect by offering immediate support including the provision of basic needs and a customized path to self-sufficiency. Our Family Care Coordinators work closely with volunteer host families who welcome children ages 0-17 into their homes while Better Together staff simultaneously mentor parents to address critical issues such as finding employment, housing, or seeking treatment. Remarkably, the average stay for a child in our program is only 45 days, a stark contrast to the 596 days averaged in government foster care. Since our inception, we have served over 9,000 children throughout Florida and reunited 96% of the families served, making substantial strides in creating positive, lasting change. Through our unwavering commitment, we aim to create positive, lasting change in the lives of families, breaking the cycle of dependence on government services and fostering self-sufficiency. Better Together respectfully requests $10,000 to help support our Better Families program throughout Central East Florida. This funding will help us strengthen and expand our services to meet the needs of families in crisis.
