Project Title: Take Charge! Medically-Based Parenting
Project Description:

Preventable family and environmental factors account for 43% of all events leading to a hospital admission for a child with medical complexity, say researchers.

Family and environmental factors, such as substandard housing, lack of transportation, and social isolation, are also leading causes of medical neglect in this population. The high rates of single parents, poverty, and unemployment are a direct consequence of the preventable family and environmental factors as well.

Children with medical complexity and developmental disabilities often end up in foster care for no other reason than their parents lacking training or access to the resources needed to manage their child’s care successfully. Based upon case reviews of our foster care program for children deemed medically-fragile, we estimate that from 35% to 40% of the children with medical complexity we serve could have stayed with their biological families. This fact led us to create our “Take Charge! Medically-Based Parenting” early intervention model.

“Take Charge! Medically-Based Parenting” focuses on four areas that parents and other family members of children with medical complexity can master and thus maintain a stable and nurturing household in which all can thrive.
In partnership with parents, Childkind addresses the social and environmental barriers these families face and guide them to success in each of the four domains of the model: 1) Child Bonding – nurturing attachment when typical means of communication are impeded by physical disabilities; 2) Parenting Sustainability – building or strengthening the parents’ ongoing personal support network; 3) Child Wellbeing – teaching parents to manage their child’s complex regimen of care successfully; and 4) Family Sustainability – helping parents taking charge of their exceedingly difficult circumstances and learning to become their own case managers and care coordinators.

Independent evaluations of the model attest to its success at keeping these families together.
