Project Title: Sexual Abuse Prevention Training for Children & Teens
Project Description:

Revved Up Kids is on a mission to protect children and teens from sexual abuse and trafficking. We accomplish our mission by providing exceptional prevention training programs in partnership with some of the most highly regarded organizations in the metro-Atlanta area. Revved Up Kids is the only nonprofit in Atlanta whose sole focus is prevention, and we have equipped more than 45,000 children to be safer.
Child sexual abuse does not discriminate, it happens across all races, religions, cultures, and socio-economic classes and, more than 90% of the time, children know their abusers. It’s difficult to fathom that most victims are abused by the very people who should be their trusted protectors. Additionally, commercial sexual exploitation of children is now the second largest criminal enterprise in the world, and Atlanta is a hotbed.
Revved Up Kids charges tuition for groups who can afford to pay for our training, but it is our belief that no child should be denied this important training due to an inability to pay. We maintain a wait list of organizations who would like to offer our training for the children and teens they serve, but do not have the resources to fund it. As funds become available, we are able to offer training to these children. Our current wait list exceeds $20,000 in program requests. We work tirelessly to raise the funds to meet the needs of every organization requesting our services. Sadly, the demand for Revved Up Kids training continually exceeds our ability to raise sufficient funds. A grant from the Foundation would be used to provide training programs for the organizations on our wait list in 2025, including several institutional partnerships like the YMCA of Metro Atlanta.

Total Project Budget: $20,000

Today’s high school students are tomorrow’s workforce leaders. Their success is not just their own; it’s critical to our community’s economic health. Yet, many graduates need more essential skills and knowledge to thrive in the ever-evolving job market.

Our program is designed to create a positive impact on academic performance, health, and social skills by combining educational tutoring with basketball training.

The key components of the program include:
• Academic Education: Certified teachers will provide targeted learning in essential skills in reading and math.

Today’s Date: March 27, 2024
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Transforming Futures: The Skills Enrichment Center’s Innovative Approach to Empowering Justice-Involved Youth
Project Description:

In an era where the criminal justice system often struggles to break the cycle of recidivism, the Skills Enrichment Center (SEC) has forged a groundbreaking partnership to provide vocational training and employment opportunities for justice-involved youth (JI youth). The statistics surrounding recidivism rates among youths aged 17-21 in Colorado are staggering. It was estimated at well over 55% in 2022. However, SEC’s vocational programs offer a beacon of hope. By equipping JI youth with tangible skills and certifications in high-demand industries, SEC aims to break the cycle of incarceration and empower these individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Through collaboration with key stakeholders such as:
-Colorado Department of Human Services, Juvenile Justice Division
-Work Options of Denver
-Skills Behavioral and Testing Center
-Employment Edge
-Colorado Department of Corrections, Youth Division

SEC is pioneering a holistic approach to empower JI youth and reduce their reliance on government social programs. Over the past four years, SEC has worked exclusively with youth with disabilities. After discovering that around 80% of JI youth have some form of disability and that youth detention centers have become a pathway to prison for youth with autism and ADHD, SEC decided to expand their mission to change this narrative.
This initiative affects the whole community. Who is to say that your car does not get stolen tonight because that youth has a job to go to? Who is to say that your favorite store does not get broken into because that youth is in a vocational training program? How many taxpayer dollars are saved not having to pay for incarceration? People talk all the time about reducing the prison population, crime, and homelessness. This initiative acts on the problems.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 26, 2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: What About the Parents: Support for Parent Learning Track Addition to After School Program
Project Description:

Montessori education has long been associated with wealthy families who can afford the exorbitant annual tuition. For example, published rates for full-day programming at Countryside Day School in Northbrook, Illinois this year ranges between $21,100 for infants and $29,600 for elementary aged students. By contrast, TMSOE is the only tuition-free Montessori Charter School in Chicago and one of the first public schools in the U.S. to offer a free Montessori education in an under-represented, high-needs urban community.

Learning Hermanowski Foundation does not fund requests for applications made in the same year as the funding need, TMSOE is submitting a revised request.

A grant of $10,000 would support the addition of a parent learning component to TMSOEs After School Program during the 2025-2026 school year. Offered to parents of the children attending TMSOE, the learning track will help parents with limited resources achieve their goals of self-sufficiency and family stability. During the next school year, TMSOE will send questionnaires to all parents to ensure the classes provided are what families need and want. However, anticipated areas include job readiness (interview skills, resume writing, job search), English as a Second Language (ESL), GED preparation, integrating Montessori principles at home, and Parent Cafés, which is safe space for peer-to-peer learning that improve resilience and strengthen supports within families. Funds will cover costs such as class materials, GED tests, and transportation.
