Project Title: TheaterWorksUSA 2025 North American Touring Productions
Project Description:

Since 1967, TheaterWorksUSA (TWUSA) has created exceptional, transformative theatrical experiences for young and family audiences in diverse communities across the United States. For nearly six decades, we have been a trailblazer in the not-for-profit theater industry, leading the evolution of theater for young audiences as an art form. We are proud to say that we emphasize accessibility by bringing our productions to more than 440 communities across the nation annually. Since our founding, over 100 million children, educators, and families have experienced live theater with a TheaterWorksUSA production, often for the first time.

Our theater work prioritizes the experience and perspective of children, and respects their honesty and intelligence. Productions often feature current events, historical figures, and complex real-life issues, serving as catalysts for important conversations between young people and the adults in their lives.

Our North American Tours bring original plays and musicals to a diverse and expansive audience, reaching young people from pre-K through high school in communities with few resources and little arts access reaching nearly 1.5 million children, educators, and caregivers nationwide every year. We are able to keep costs low for schools and families through our subsidized ticket program Cause for Applause, which not only limits our ticket price at $12 per student but also distributes free and reduced-cost tickets to those who demonstrate need.

We recently implemented a new core strategy to pilot a Regional Operations Hub model to improve operating efficiency, cultivate local relationships, and enhance the delivery of our mission from coast to coast. Crucially, this initiative will also expand and diversify our staff. Currently, we are in the process of implementing a significant hub in Los Angeles, CA and are looking to add several additional regional operations hubs in areas with established relationships like in Pennsylvania and Florida, as well as other opportunities throughout the United States.

Requested Amount: $9,000

Project Title: Laptops for Middle School Students in Need
Project Description:

We respectfully request your consideration of a grant of $9,000 to purchase 25 Chromebooks for students in need at Boca Raton Community Middle School. These laptops will ensure that every child, regardless of their family’s financial means, has access to the educational tools they need to succeed in our classrooms every day.

Laptops have been a required part of educational instruction for every student in Palm Beach County since 2020. Daily use has resulted in substantial wear and tear; over the past four years, our inventory has been repaired many times and machines are now breaking down faster. Though the School District does repair and replace laptops, the waitlist is long in our district of 190 schools. This leaves students without the devices they need to fully participate in lessons, access supplementary materials, and take tests.

This challenge impacts students from economically disadvantaged families — 66% of our student body — the most. When their school-issued laptops malfunction, their families may not have a back-up laptop or computer they can use. These students are also more likely to have greater achievement gaps since the pandemic; lack of functional laptops during classroom instruction contributes to their ongoing struggle to catch up.

Funding from the Hermanowski Foundation will be directed to purchase 25 new Chromebooks, which will be used as back-ups for students with an immediate need. Teachers will keep laptops locked in their classrooms and provide them to students on an as-needed basis, to return at the end of class. This system ensures that students have access to the materials they need in class while reducing laptop wear and tear. This approach also increases access for more students; a different student may use a classroom’s laptop during every period, rather than one student carrying the laptop with them for the day.

Total Project Budget: $54,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We are at the beginning of our efforts to raise community support for this initiative, and have pending requests with Soroptimists Int’l Deerfield Beach/Boca Raton, the Walter & Adi Blum Foundation, the Einstein Fund, the Palm Beach Flagler Rotary Foundation, and the City of Boca Raton.

Project Duration: Our goal is to purchase a total of 150 laptops at a cost of $360 each, enough to provide two per classroom, by August 2025. We anticipate that laptops will last five years (each comes with a five year warranty) and serve a student body of 1,225 each year.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Character Does Matter: Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
Project Description:

Travis Manion Foundation’s veteran-led youth mentorship program is Character Does Matter (CDM). Character Does Matter represents the culmination of TMF’s mission, leveraging the skills of our nation’s military community as role models, educating youth on character and leadership. The basis of all Travis Manion Foundation programming and the Character Does Matter curriculum is Positive Psychology, a field dedicated to studying factors that contribute to individual and community well-being and thriving. Individuals involved with CDM are empowered to improve their well-being by finding meaning and purpose in their lives, developing meaningful relationships, and fully engaging in activities. Through CDM, veterans inspire students, with a focus on fourth through twelfth grades, to live a life of service, leadership, and character.

Travis Manion Foundation is requesting a follow-on investment of $10,000 to support the continuation of our partnership as we impact more youth leaders in Florida. In our 2022 grant proposal, Travis Manion Foundation committed to impacting at least 6,750 youth in our Southeast Region through the Character Does Matter program and training a minimum of 55 new Veteran Mentors in the process. During this time, TMF far surpassed this goal, impacting approximately 8,525 youth in the region through 404 Character Does Matter events led by 51 Veteran Mentors. Approximately 500 of these youth were located in Florida specifically, compared to the previous fiscal year (2021-2022) which impacted only 103 local Florida youth. This growth is in large part due to the generosity of the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation. We look forward to continuing to build momentum and capacity in Florida in 2025. Thank you for your support and consideration.

Project Title: Life Skills for Youth’s 2025 Summer Academy
Project Description:

Life Skills for Youth (LSY) is an afterschool and summer program located in southwest Little Rock, Arkansas. Our mission is to mentor, equip, and empower youth to pursue a greater purpose for themselves and their community. While we also provide math and literacy tutoring, the core of LSY programming is teaching youth important life skills. For example, LSY is known nationally for its cutting-edge ATM (Anger, Time and Money) Management program that teaches youth how to manage emotions, plan time, and handle money responsibly. Since it was founded in 2007, LSY has helped empower over 3,800 youth, served over 1.5 million healthy meals and snacks, and touched the lives of countless families.

We respectfully request a $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Foundation to fund our 2025 Summer Academy, a 10-week summer program that allows students in grades K-12 to receive tutoring in math and literacy, participate in STEAM and other enrichment activities, go on field trips, and have fun in a safe and caring environment. Over 90 percent of our summer program participants attend low-income Title I schools during the school year, and their families have few affordable options where their kids can go during the summer months.

Each morning, certified teachers lead classes in math and literacy. In the afternoon, youth move into STEM and Spanish classes, alternating with scheduled field trips that support academic discovery and exploration. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are served each day.

LSY is working to raise almost $300,000 for next year’s Summer Academy. A $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Foundation would help cover the cost of one coach and one parent coordinator. We would love to partner with you in closing the summer learning gap and ensuring that our students are prepared to succeed when school resumes in the fall.

Project Title: Knight Rides
Project Description:

**Bridging Transportation Gaps for Vulnerable Populations**

Transportation is a lifeline, yet for many vulnerable individuals, it’s an insurmountable barrier. Unable to access essential services or explore their community, they’re left behind. In Virginia, 1 in 4 people lives with a disability, underscoring the need for inclusive transportation. Public transit falls short, with long waits and inaccessible routes, and areas like York County don’t even have the option.

We’re pioneering a solution: a volunteer-driven transport service for vulnerable populations. Our drivers undergo thorough checks and disability awareness training, ensuring safety and inclusivity. Once our app is complete they will also be equipped with GPS. Knight Rides drivers provide reliable, accessible rides tailored to individual needs.

By supplementing public transit, we empower vulnerable individuals to engage fully in community life. Whether accessing healthcare or employment, everyone deserves safe, independent mobility. Our hope is to expand our app to be used by other local nonprofits after it is piloted within our organization.

Your support is crucial. Currently, Knight Rides provides vital transport for students with disabilities, facilitating access to inclusive internships within our READY Program. In 2023 alone, we provided 1,162 rides. That is what the project budget is based off of, but the program is growing exponentially the actual cost will likely be much higher by 2025 with a larger increase in rides provided. With your help, we can support and expand these efforts, ensuring no one is left behind. Together, let’s create a community where everyone thrives.

Project Title: Somali Youth Leadership Project
Project Description:

New American Development Center (NADC) requests support for our work with Somali/East African youth in Minneapolis to increase high school graduation rates and opportunities for our youth to thrive in Minnesota. Our youth programming includes leadership and entrepreneurship training, tutoring, and mentorship, designed around our community’s experiences, beliefs, perspectives, languages, and customs.

NADC was founded in 2008 to address the challenges facing the growing East African/Somali immigrant population in the Twin Cities. Our mission is to lower the poverty rate of refugees, immigrants, and low-income Somali and East African community members through authentic, culturally appropriate, and sustainable programs that include entrepreneurship training, technical assistance, business development, home ownership, and advocacy.

Our youth development programming aims to close the opportunity gap for Somali/East African youth, including mentorship, tutoring, and youth entrepreneurship training. All of our programming is constituent-driven and responds to the needs of our community. In the past, NADC collaborated with DEED to establish a youth business incubator, facilitating six Somali youth to start up and co-own businesses. NADC also partnered with Abbot Northwestern Hospital to train Somali high school students to shadow doctors and nurses, volunteer at the front desk, and gain exposure to ICU units
Collectively, our youth programming aims to provide positive outlets, leadership development opportunities, and connections to caring adults, all delivered through culturally-responsive programming. These strategies are all protective factors against negative youth outcomes including poor academic performance, risky behavior, and mental health concerns. Further, our culturally-specific programming helps Somali/East African youth connect with their home cultures and languages while preparing them to thrive in mainstream American culture.

Project Title: One-on-One Programmatic Support for FYR Local Clubs
Project Description:

Forging Youth Resilience (FYR) empowers young people to build physical and mental strength for life by providing access to a national network of free community-based fitness programs, mentorship, and nutrition education. FYR Local Clubs in 19 under-resourced communities offer free fitness classes 2-5 times/week for youth from historically marginalized communities. Workouts serve to develop health-oriented habits, create community, teach athletes to regulate stress, and build coping skills. Through trauma-informed practices, FYR addresses the youth mental health and obesity crises by improving fitness, resilience and self-efficacy.

Because of FYR’s geographic footprint, FYR National allows Local Clubs to problem solve with a degree of autonomy. This has created a culturally responsive organization, allowing the community to respond to challenges in the way that best serves them.

FYR National provides a governance framework for FYR Local Clubs, including compliance, financials, fundraising, marketing and nonprofit best practices. This umbrella allows FYR a scalable model for organizational changes and direct service initiatives. FYR has identified Local Clubs who are experiencing difficulties in utilizing available resources, which will prevent participation in several direct-service roll-outs in 2024-25. The current project is to bring these Local Clubs “up to speed” through on-site visits and one-on-one mentoring.

Funds received from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will also be used to support the FYR Volunteer Summit, where Local Club coaches and volunteers convene to receive FYR’s proprietary “Trauma-Informed Coaching” training and to gain knowledge on building organizational capacity. While Local Clubs have challenges unique to their community, convening to discuss solutions creates an environment where new ideas can be implemented on a larger scale. Allowing Local Clubs this support is imperative, but unfortunately can only be provided virtually in 2024. These grant funds would bring back the in-person Summit in March 2025!
