Project Title: One-on-One Programmatic Support for FYR Local Clubs
Project Description:

Forging Youth Resilience (FYR) empowers young people to build physical and mental strength for life by providing access to a national network of free community-based fitness programs, mentorship, and nutrition education. FYR Local Clubs in 19 under-resourced communities offer free fitness classes 2-5 times/week for youth from historically marginalized communities. Workouts serve to develop health-oriented habits, create community, teach athletes to regulate stress, and build coping skills. Through trauma-informed practices, FYR addresses the youth mental health and obesity crises by improving fitness, resilience and self-efficacy.

Because of FYR’s geographic footprint, FYR National allows Local Clubs to problem solve with a degree of autonomy. This has created a culturally responsive organization, allowing the community to respond to challenges in the way that best serves them.

FYR National provides a governance framework for FYR Local Clubs, including compliance, financials, fundraising, marketing and nonprofit best practices. This umbrella allows FYR a scalable model for organizational changes and direct service initiatives. FYR has identified Local Clubs who are experiencing difficulties in utilizing available resources, which will prevent participation in several direct-service roll-outs in 2024-25. The current project is to bring these Local Clubs “up to speed” through on-site visits and one-on-one mentoring.

Funds received from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will also be used to support the FYR Volunteer Summit, where Local Club coaches and volunteers convene to receive FYR’s proprietary “Trauma-Informed Coaching” training and to gain knowledge on building organizational capacity. While Local Clubs have challenges unique to their community, convening to discuss solutions creates an environment where new ideas can be implemented on a larger scale. Allowing Local Clubs this support is imperative, but unfortunately can only be provided virtually in 2024. These grant funds would bring back the in-person Summit in March 2025!
