Project Title: Nature’s Family
Project Description:

YAMM wants to meet several important needs through its "Nature’s Family" project for families with children through the following:

We recognize the need for families to strengthen their bonds and relationships. Many families face challenges in finding quality time to spend together due to busy schedules and distractions. YAMM wants to create opportunities for families to connect, communicate, and build lasting memories through shared outdoor experiences.

YAMM acknowledges the importance of mental health and well-being for individuals and families. In today’s fast-paced and stressful world, families experience various mental health challenges, including stress, anxiety, and depression. YAMM wants to provide an understanding and encouraging surrounding where families can relax, recharge, and prioritize their mental wellness through outdoor activities and therapeutic experiences.

We understand the healing benefits of connecting with nature. Many families, especially those living in underserved areas, have limited access to green spaces and outdoor environments. YAMM wishes to provide families with opportunities to engage themselves in nature, appreciate its beauty, and experience the healing power of the natural world.

YAMM wants to improve the overall quality of life for families by offering enriching and meaningful experiences through outdoor camping. Beyond meeting basic needs, such as food and shelter, YAMM recognizes the importance of holistic well-being, including social connections, personal growth, and emotional fulfillment. Through its camping program, YAMM wants to add to families’ overall happiness and satisfaction with life.

YAMM acknowledges the importance of developing interactive skills, such as communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution, within families. Strong interactive relationships are necessary for healthy family functioning and contribute to individuals’ overall success and well-being. Project Title: Maui GEMs
Project Description:

Our Summer Internship Program, designed to empower 20 Maui County girls aged 14-19, is enriched with a comprehensive support structure that extends beyond the immediate four-week internship. Beginning two months prior to the physical internship, participants engage in a preparatory phase, where they receive foundational training and resources to prime them for their upcoming professional experiences. This pre-internship support is crucial for equipping the girls with the necessary skills and confidence to maximize their learning and contributions during the actual internship.
Spanning four weeks, the core of the program pairs each girl with a mentor, who is a successful business owner, to provide guidance and support as they navigate their internships at local businesses. This mentorship is pivotal, ensuring a personalized, nurturing, and enriching journey for each participant, aiming to instill practical work experience, foster mentorship relationships, and develop key skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Furthermore, our program emphasizes the importance of ongoing support following the internship. Through post-internship follow-ups, we continue to engage with the participants, offering additional resources, guidance, and opportunities to reflect on their experiences and plan their future endeavors. This sustained engagement helps solidify the gains made during the internship and mentorship periods, encouraging continuous personal and professional growth.
Our comprehensive approach, encompassing pre-internship preparation, an immersive internship experience, and ongoing post-internship support, aims to increase awareness of diverse career paths, inspire the girls to pursue their passions, and empower them to become confident, assertive leaders. By providing a holistic developmental experience, we are committed to inspiring and equipping the next generation of female leaders, ready to excel in their chosen fields.

Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Learning ROCKS
Project Description:

Aspire has three key areas within our “Learning ROCKS” program that support students in 3rd-8th grade and their families:

First, we offer an afterschool program for 130+ students at 3 locations in South Arlington from 3pm to 6pm every weekday. This is the county’s only daily afterschool program for children in 3rd-8th grade that is provided at no cost to families.

Students participate in at least 30 minutes of dedicated reading activities, a social-emotional lesson, and a lesson on Literacy, STEAM, Culture & Current Events, Social-Emotional Learning, or Health & Nutrition. They also receive homework support; individualized tutoring and support with foundational skills, phonics, and math; and a hot meal. We use evidence-based methods so that each student receives personalized support based on their goals, needs, and learning styles.

The program is led by our staff, as well as our AmeriCorps members who also serve in the students’ schools. As a result of their engagement in-school and out-of-school, AmeriCorps members can partner with teachers to connect out-of-school programming to school curriculum and identify students who could benefit from our program, reaching approximately 1,000 additional students in the classrooms with lighter-touch supports.

Second, we offer a free six-week, full-day intensive summer camp to provide a safe and fun environment and help prevent summer learning loss. The content reinforces school curriculum and emphasizes experiential learning opportunities that focus on problem-solving, inquiry, and collaboration.

Third, we offer year-round support to children’s families through one-on-one support and group workshops. Our full-time bilingual AmeriCorps parent engagement coordinator is a reliable point of contact for families. She fields calls from families who need additional support and facilitates connections to resources at Aspire and with our community partners and organizes workshops focused on topics that help parents support their children’s learning.

Total Project Budget: $1,058,914 (draft program budget for FY25)

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Aspire leverages a diverse stream of funders and partners. Our top five funders are the Federal Government (which contributes a portion of the living stipend for our AmeriCorps members), The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the State Government, the Greater Washington Community Foundation, and Morgan Stanley. A full list of our funders is available upon request.

Project Title: Emergency Victims Crisis Fund (EVCF)
Project Description:

The Emergency Victim Crisis Fund (EVCF) helps clients cover the costs of basic, urgent needs such as household furnishings, new beds, medical care or equipment, and other items that going without would further harm the client or cause additional stress and pain for the family. After a child is exposed to abuse or other violence, families need the stability of a safe home with electricity and running water, beds to sleep in, healthy food, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing their medical needs and those of their family members will be met. They also need productive outlets for their emotions. While our Clinical Services team works with clients, their siblings, and non-offending caregivers to address their trauma through therapy, the EVCF supports families in meeting their basic needs so that the client and caregivers can focus on healing and rebuilding safety after trauma.

We focus on a holistic approach to youth development. TRU-Impact participants remain actively engaged in programming at a time when our nation and school districts struggle to implement effective plans that meet the needs of all students and conform to our “new normal”. The students of TRU-Impact mirror the diverse society in which we live. As a result of being a part of this culturally diverse village, the students of TI will form their own future villages, diverse in nature, without fear.
TRU-Impact primarily serves the at-risk youth within the city of Rochester, NY starting with a focus on 5th grade through senior high.
In conjunction with our holistic approach to education, we have identified three focus areas to address the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. TRU-Impact’s “TLC” healthy lifestyle initiative will introduce and provide access to holistic healthy living where there has been a void for this sector of the population. Our focus areas are healthy eating (Treat), mental health (Loving Life), and physical fitness (Cardio Cardio Cardio!).
For the 2024/25 Academic year, we have partnered with the Exploration Charter School to provide In/Out of School time Programming to students in K-5.

Project Title: Girls on the Run Programming to Meet the Current Physical and Mental Health Needs of Adolescent Girls
Project Description:

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based youth development program designed to enhance the social, emotional, and physical skills of girls to successfully navigate life experiences. Trained volunteer coaches deliver the life skills curriculum by guiding small teams of girls through twice-a-week lessons that promote social-emotional learning concurrently with physical activity. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and completing a 5K.

We offer two programs two-10 week seasons: Girls on the Run for participants in grades 3-5 and Heart & Sole for participants in grades 6-8. Girls on the Run focuses on building self-worth and empathy, setting and achieving goals, and activating individual star power through team-building activities. Heart & Sole emphasizes the whole girl by focusing on the body, brain, heart, spirit; connection with others to develop a strong support system, foster healthy relationships, inspire intentional goal setting and decision making, and empower our young generation to be active in embracing differences and strengthening the many communities in their lives.

We also offer a junior coach program for high school juniors and seniors who want to grow their leadership skills and better understand the importance of helping a community provide positive youth development programming. Paired with a mentor coach, junior coaches receive support to develop their personal leadership skills while serving as role models and peer mentors to participants. Mentor coaches model an open relationship with their junior coach based on honesty and encouragement.

Girls on the Run Rhode Island is seeking support to bring our research-driven program to participants from historically marginalized communities with limited access to high impact out-of-school time programs.
